As former Regular (5 years), I can't bash NS as a national policy. It's a social and political necessity. That said, I CAN bash the quality of this video. The slow tempo, cheap instrumental arrangements (why the guitar?) and corny lyrics made the SAF promo feel like a bad SIA commercial.(S'pore Int'l Airline for my overseas pals who don't know). The video should have been set to a quick, sweeping orchestral piece (without lyrics) and end on a rousing note.

Apparently our military is so strong we use water guns as our primary weapon, with a massive armoured brigade of 3 tanks and a few aircraft ( out of the few, the engines of 3 of the aircraft cannot work) and showing off remote controlled helicopters in parades, and having the primary goal of our submarines to catch crabs in Malaysia, and I think we sent some men to Afghanistan to salvage Soviet tanks there and then use a red marker to cross out the soviet symbol on the tank and write down 'USA'

A TON of my friends are serving NS but I really seriously don't see the point in making in compulsory. It only makes some of them hating it even more.
Quoting USA as an example, their soldiers are highly honored and everyone respects them. As such, their roles become more valued.
Do you think it's remotely possible that it can happen in Singapore too?

There is an indentity forged among Singaporean men who have been through NS. It's hard to explain, but when we think about NS and talk about it, beneath all the complaints, we know it was a very good experience, and we know why it was important to serve our nation for the 2 years.

There is no such thing as MUST JOIN. It is up to the individuals or parents to file injunction and even damages against a government forcing them.

Not sure bout you guys, but I still look back fondly at my NS days and look forward to meeting friends during IPPT and reservist.

Yes, enlistment happens in many other countries too. BUT, these countries (and in fact, almost all countries in the world, whether 1st-world or 3rd-world) treate their citizens as number 1, while foreigners are 2nd-class. It is only in sg, that it's the reverse.
We must keep this in mind, when talking about NS. Yes, NS is impt, but only if the country is worth defending. Given how PAP is running the country as if it is ITS PRIVATE COMPANY instead of OUR COUNTRY, is it?

That may explain why there ALWAYS seem to be SO MUCH MONEY spent on upgrading Air Force infrastructure and buying new Fighter Jets while roads in Army bases remain potholed and technology primitive.
Which would of course likewise, exacerbate spirits of even those who joined the Army on their own FREE WILL.

when i was in the army, the only regulars were washouts and dropouts. They were pretty fucked up; abuse of authority was common. That's the sort of people who join the army.

As former Regular (5 years), I can't bash NS as a national policy. It's a social and political necessity. That said, I CAN bash the quality of this video. The slow tempo, cheap instrumental arrangements (why the guitar?) and corny lyrics made the SAF promo feel like a bad SIA commercial.(S'pore Int'l Airline for my overseas pals who don't know). The video should have been set to a quick, sweeping orchestral piece (without lyrics) and end on a rousing note.
