Why? Because the yanks can't get their heads around Opal Fruits. Commerce killed off our favourite sweets.

they're made with natural dyes. the purple ones for instance aren't even vegetarian technically purple the dye is made using a derivative of the Cochineal insect. :)

thats why blue ones were gone too, because they couldn't find a natural blue dye when they switched. Now they have supposedly.

I've never heard that before. The "eat the red ones last" campaign originated in England, where Smarties originated. The jingle is based on "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour", by Lonnie Donegan (a British Skiffle musician). So the "red ones = the maple leaf" seems unlikely.
