This is interesting, 'cause I know he's said that he's often dishonest about his methods. I think he lies about the explanation to make it look more bizarre - I'm pretty sure my subconcious didn't notice the man's face. Instead, I think it's the simple fact that the man most people picked has beard and thereforer is different in some way from the others, and when in such a hurry you hold on to everything like that. Therefore you pick the beard man, but the explanation gets part of the trick!
