Most states I have lived in all say stop at the stop sign, clearly marked stop line or follow a police order. Then too, 49 out of 50 states have uniform traffic laws.
I'm surrprised that Iowa does not have that law.. As the stop sign is just before the crosswalk.
A lot of states I lived in requires to stop at the sign. Going past the sign is considered running it. Stopping behind a car that stopped does not count.
A few states say stop before a crosswalk (upto 20 feet).
Stop before crossing a sidewalk.
Before I could get my licenese I had to sit in traffic court.. The judge told many people to stop for 3 seconds (wheels not turning).....
A few years ago I heard a statistic that only 7% of drivers routinely stop properly at stop signs and red lights. From counting when the 'fails' and 'passes' I'd think that's about right, but can't track down or confirm the source of the number. Anyone know of something similar in your jurisdiction?
Did anyone stop properly? Maybe I'm not seeing this from the right angle, not understanding what marks on the pavement constitute the crosswalk, or misunderstanding something about this state's traffic laws. But it looks to me like the two cars that got a 'pass' (green SUV at 0:37 and green Taurus at 1:38) both stopped with their bumpers in the crosswalk.
This doesn't surprise me at all. Where I live I watched a 3 way intersection near the back of a mall for 6 minutes and observed 28 cars. 60% did a rolling stop. 20% stopped completely. And 20% blasted right through it!
im from australia and our laws are heaps different to you guys. Our law states that we must stop anywhere(its ok even if half of the car is into the intersection or over the crosswalk) we must stop for a least 2 seconds. The penalty for not doing so, is a $328 fine and 3 demirit points (if u get more than 12 demerit points in a 3 year period, ur licence will b suspended for 3-12 months). but yeah im a police officer in sydney and in 4 years ive never booked anyone for not stopping at a stop sign.
I'll bet this is done EVERYWHERE. I see cars blow stop signs ALL THE TIME where I live. I can see 3 stop signs from my house and people blow though them ALL the time, every day.
Cars drivers are such hypocrites, they bitch about bicycle riders breaking the laws when they are much worse. stops signs plus breaking the speed limits, for example.
I don't believe it! In the past few years the failure of cyclists and pedestrians to stop at stop signs has become a disgraceful embarrassment. All the while organizations representing cyclists have dramatically failed to admonish their membership for doing so. The disgraceful behavior of pedestrians and cyclists has now progressed to automobiles, and organizations representing cyclists are now admonishing people in automobiles for failing to stop at stop signs? This is unbelievable hypocrisy!
Lets put this into perspective jfbriggs. The facts are the facts, long before bikes wanted to share the roads, when I was 3 years old and sitting in my mommies lap driving around town without a car seat, my daddy went thru many a stop sign. 36 years later, cars are still going thru stop signs as well as bikes, trucks, tricycles, mopeds, tractors, and cop cars. Don't be pissed at a biker or anyone else, if you don't stop at a stop sign 100% of the time yourself. That is all it is saying.
I ride my bike to work every day. The most dangerous part is crossing with the lighted crosswalk signal. Cars are totally clueless as to why I've been standing in front of them for the last minute and what the white cross sign means. If I was a little kid, not paying attention, I'd be killed a couple times a week. As the video show, the far lane turning right is just as bad. motorists have a cell phone in their left hand, so they can't even see me coming through the cross walk! Scary!

Can u please tell me how the green car at 1:32 failed. It clearly stopped
IFuSEEKjustin 2 years ago
because the driver stopped on the crosswalk. Obviously you don't know the laws and can't read them when they are right in the video.

We are supposed to stop for three seconds.

Can you see the stop sign? You're supposed to stop BEFORE the stop sign. This is the problem Someone is actually arguing with a video!!!!!!!

You'll note that one of the two "passes" was by a car turning left - who is hanging out through the cross walk!

I like it. A lot. I've known for years that bicyclists get a bad rap and now this proves how hypocritical the nay-sayers are.
