@longhairedbill I don't think I was introduced to Merlin as slash - it's been almost a year, now, so I can't be sure - but I do remember that particular scene making me thing that this was going to be like that time I watched the first six seasons of Xena (in a month, which was insane, and I had Gabrielle's voice stuck in my head for AGES afterwards). Which I can aptly describe as: Subtext. Romance. Ambiguous stuff about intertwined destinies. Smooching. More subtext. "What, us, gay? Pffft."

And M/A certainly are. Ambiguously, only because people assume destiny is purely duty, no pleasure, but really, destiny means connecting yourself to your highest energy (purpose) which feels really GOOD! lol. The duty is sharing that connection with a lesser advanced world.
What Arthur feels for Merlin is a deeper sense of friendship, than love. Its hurts Merlin, but he knows Arthur be rather upset if anything would happen to him.
Arthur will always be his hero and his friend, no matter what. He rather have that than nothing at all.
Anybody else reminded of Jack and Ianto from Torchwood when they watch these two? I definitely am. ^^ The dynamic is similar, and even the look of the characters.
