@CricketSayWhat RuthieWho(TM)? The ugly singer with the equally ugly, rough voice? The one who can't even measure up to her fellow UK singer, international sensation Susan Boyle, while she remains a DOMESTIC STARLET who is now a CAREERLESS HAS-BEEN? Yeah, right, that NON-SINGER/NON-ACTOR'S' version is better than Salonga's? What a joke, ha ha ha!
@archieanders Oh please! The joke is on you jack! If you put your biases aside you might realise this woman overacts with her facial expressions, her tone and tempo is slightly off but noticeable, and at times seems like she has the wrong expression on her face entirely. As I stated before, Ruthie's version is better! Not buyin your desperate plea to make this woman seem better than she is. I prefer Ruthie's version because it's FLAWLESS, this one is good but it's not perfect.
@CricketSayWhat Nope. Ruthie couldn't act and was as wooden as a tree, which is why Ruthie fans are so overwhelmed and find it overacted when they see the role actually being acted out. Plus Ruthie's voice, with its jagged timbre and unsustained ability, has inferior quality compared to Salonga's. Ruthie was probably okay 15 years ago, but her unimpressive singing has deteriorated further. She wasn't eyed for the 25th anniversary, sorry.
Susan Boyle is an amateur who had been rehearsing her whole life without the the mentor she needed. And when she sang her chance on BGT, it came out good due to the echo level she was given to make it sound a bit on the professional side but a pro can spot that she is an unpolished diamond. People must stop comparing Boyle to Salonga as Salonga from Henshall.
I was living in London at the time of Ruthie's appearance in Les Mis, so perhaps I'm biased - Lea is a fantastic singer no doubt but - and it's just my offering for what it's worth - Fantine is a fragile and hurt character rather then a bold and 'out there' sort of person no? So for me, I think that Ruthie capture's that essence so well, her frailty really shines through - but then, to go through what Fantine went through would bolster any person - so maybe that's what Lea brings?
we watched this for choir one day so our teacher could show us what it meant to sing from every part of ur self! i was crying before she even finished singing!!
I like her voice... But... She just enunciates too much for it to sound natural. :/ I give this performace a 8/10. Sorry to any fans of the actress, I like it, I really do. :) Just... Not that much...
@JLuvsWicked93 I think that is required when it comes to broadway to pronounce the words very clearly so that the audience can understand the meaning of the song.
There are songs that move and inspire, lovely lyrics and mesmerizing melodies, and there are vocalists that evoke warmth and joy and a gamut of emotions--then every once in a while there comes a song like this and an artist whose voice complements it perfectly. Those are the times when I realize that music is quintessential nourishment for the body, mind, and soul. The talent these artists have is their gift from God, and their music is God's gift to us
@LouisDE1 I totally agree with you on that one. Her voice is perfect, the song is even mor perfet, and together everything meshes so beautifully that it really just makes the entire song come to life with pure emotion. And it seems like when she sings the song, she doesn't have to try to hard to act, it just comes out of her naturally.
Well the higher notes are a little strained, but people have to realize that she's doing this all in her chest voice. That's incredibly difficult to even go that high, let alone sound as good as she does when she hits the high notes.
Lea Salonga is obviously a pro and everything she sings is superb, I just like her better as Eponine, because that character's range is perfect for her. I felt like the higher notes were strained, like when she sang "...but there are dreams that cannot beeeeeeeee" and "...so different now from what it seeeeeeeeeemed."
Lea, you're "I dreamed I dream" is good, but I think it's not you're better rendition..in this 25th anniversary it seem that you have problem with the lower notes..I thought you were pregnant!!
Anyway, you performed the BETTER "On my own" of the history!!!
BUT Ruthie Henshall is the ONLY Fantine,(in my opinion) so full of deep emotion; in the 10th performance she was apparently motionless...but HER EYES..every gesture was superfluous, a world in her look..
that stage is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! the lights are so awesome! i love her voice!! I really see know problum with her last couple of notes everyone sings it differently :P i love her as Fantine :D
I must say...she is very good...but I am a little disappointed in this performance. NO ONE KILL ME! It's just it sounds very unnatural when she hits the high notes at the end...and in fact it's a bit too loud and WAY to vibrato. She was EXCELLENT as Fantine, and I really think that that's the role she should stick to.
@mpianozak96 i also think lea hits those high notes unnaturally in the end. but, if she elevates her voice, her voice may be too crystal and clear for IDAD. just take come to me for instance, her voice is high-pitched and somehow younger than i expect. before portraying fantine, many people think her crystal clear doesn't suit the role. to make her voice mature, i think vibrato and low but powerful voice is the best adjustment. lea is smart and know how to strike a balance in her performance.
@hsupeiwei This is true actually I never thought of that...and her "Come to Me" is very beautiful. Don't get me wrong she is a very good actress...but I do see what you mean completely.
@mpianozak96 ^^ she is absolutely the best actress. and i am a huge fan of her. it is delightful to know you understand my viewpoint, i am afriad that someone may distort my words at first><. those high notes are very easy for lea to sing, and she just does some adjustment to suit the role XD otherwise, we may hear princess singing IDAD. it constantly confuses me that why a women turn 40 can still have such a clear voice. lea knows how to make good use of her voice to suit role. shs is amazing.
Wow, why is everyone bashing Ruthie Henshall? I came here to listen to Lea Salonga because I think she's an amazing singer, and I think she sang this beautifully, so I have absoloutely no bad opinions about her. Yet, (I'm sorry to any hardcore Lea fans who might take offense for some reason) I prefer Henshall's version. I'm sorry, I just think she has a better voice for the part, and I always see Lea as Eponine.
@AbsolutelyAllybum nah, i aint think so . . . she's a performer we can look up to, but NOT copied . . . or else there'll be no one who can surpass her :), just saying, cause diff. actors have different hidden abilities that MAYBE be bigger and better than hers (p.s. not saying it in a bitchy way) (^v^)

@BestEstonia Tired of looking at your survey that has only you and you and you voting using multiple identities? So now you've decided to visit Salonga's video, so you can start spamming here? Pathetic. Your idol, the DOMESTIC STARLET HAS-BEEN Ruthie Henshall has no more career, so enjoy her videos now before she totally fades into oblivion. Lea Salonga fans have better things to do. On the other hand, maybe you should just watch SUSAN BOYLE. Now, that's a real star! Henshall? Eh.
@archieanders Now, I'm not sure what the original comment which you are replying to said about Lea Salonga, and I'm sure they said something completely rude and innapropriate, but you are accusing them of bashing her while you seem to hate Ruthie Henshall as much as they hate Lea Salonga, sooo....
I just can't get over how fantastic this woman is-I love it! I am a massive fan of Lea Salonga and when I watched this at the cinema, I cried, I was that astounded by it! She is going to leave her legacy in musical theatre long after she's retired!
i wasso lucky 2 be there & was actually seated in one of the 'A' seats in front of the stage & witnessed first hand the brilliant world class performance of the multifaceted, multi award winning actress of the one & only Lea Salonga!!! her voice was so powerful that it pierces the heart! i was so touched & so moved that i'm not @ all embarassed 2 say that i was actually teary eyed listening 2 her crystal clear voice singing those classic songs! U just can't help but 2 B very PROUD of her!!!
she is really good but I like her as the other role best. I think her tone quality is good for a younger role and this song needs that mature sound. She is still excellent though :)
well said cynical. I really love how lea interpret this song. Its full of emotion. Not just delivering high note, but a combination of emotions and technique. Only you can find to a true musical artist.
So I am watching the 25th Anniversary DVD now, and while I don't want to compare, BUT the 10th is just PERFECT! I'm on "Who am I?" now. We'll see how it goes. But my verdict right now: 25th adds some good stuff and the singers are more expressive, but the 10th takes the cake!
She sings from somewhere inside her soul. You don't need to see her beautiful face, her voice tells the story of the song when you close your eyes and listen.
The pathos in this song....the too often repeated fate of young ladies trusting in love....makes me all teary when she sings "He slept a summer by my side, etc. Les Miserables is a morality play on so many levels, and the music is pure magic!
I like Lea's voice too but I've always imagined Fantine to be this woman who was deceived, hurt and abandoned by her love in her youth but in 1:38 and 2:04, 2:58, 3:49 Lea's facial gestures do not show love mixed with hurt but anger/hate as if she wants vengeance - - she scares me, I wish she were kinder and had more expressions of love - that's all. Sorry fans. I'm a fan too but just wish she looked kinder.
love lea salonga very much.. not just because she's a filipina.. i love her for her pure talent at singing and acting.. it was because of her that i fell in love with broadway musicals.. if i haven't heard her "on my own", i would not know the beauty and magic of musical productions..
i've always loved this song, no matter whose version.. it's so full of passion: love and pain.. i cried when i first heard it, and i cry still.. :')
I don't have any powers, but I think someone already made a good point: This is Lea Salonga's video and in his opinion, no one should be mentioning names of CREATURES BENEATH SALONGA in Salonga's videos. Post comments about such lowly creatures in their own videos. In the first place, why visit videos of pathetic Filipinos to begin with? Thank you.
I was fortunate enough to see her in this role on Broadway a few years ago. I don't think it's fair to compare actresses/singers to each other because they each bring something to their roles. Mrs. Salonga was wonderful in this role, and I prefer her here than as Eponine. She brings an anger and indignation to both roles that I prefer to see in Fantine rather than Eponine. They have similar, unrequieted love, but Fantine has given up while Eponine has not.
RuthieWho?(TM) The overrated singer who had an old scratchy voice, enunciation issues, and whose idea of acting was standing in front of everyone, as stoic as a tree? The "actress" who performed this song without any facial expressions or artistic bod movements? The one who, if she had taken lessons from Susan Boyle, wouldn't be the DOMESTIC STARLET HAS-BEEN that she is now? RuthieWho?(TM) As someone has said, don't mention names of creatures BENEATH Salonga in Salonga's videos...
I agree that Lea is the best Eponine ever, and that overall Ruthie outshines Lea in her performance. Lea's lower register, although impressive, is nowhere near as magical as her normal range. For "I Dreamed a Dream," though, she allows a slightly more youthful tone, and I'm sorry, but she just blows away everyone else on this song. I'd rather hear her sing "On My Own," though - Eponine is the role she was born to play. We're splitting hairs, though - both Ruthie and Lea are magnificent!
I've been debating whether I like this version or Ruthie Henshall's After listening to this along side Ruthie's version and really looking at it, I finally came to a conclusion. There is no definitively better version if you ask me. Both versions are outstanding. Some aspects of this one are better (facial expressions and emotion being the number one for me), and some aspects are better in Henshall's version (dynamics being number one). It's really up to you to decide.
@45lollipop OMG I DID and it was the best . I was a lil disappointed she didnt get the part but hey she did a great job on this one. Lea will always be eponine for me ♥
sounds like the copy PBS got had a technical error as the whole score was dropped down a notch. glad to see that's not how it actually sounded at the concert
Really, everybody? I like her a lot--in other things. Loved her performance as Eponine in the Dream Cast. But she seems to be straining here in both the lower and upper registers, and she is often off pitch, particularly in the scene with Javert and Valjean. It is uncomfortable listening to her. You can appreciate an artist and still have a clear-eyed view of an individual performance. This is just not one of her best.
she over pronounces nearly every word she sings. the "r"s at the end of her words have always killed me. I thought maybe she would down the "errrr"ing in this role, but she didn't.
her acting is alright, but her voice ruins it.
I can't get into lea salonga, her voice never seems to have any levels to it. it's just always....sharp en/pronunciation and...loud.
her only real dynamic seems to be (de)crescendo
her emotion always seems very forced. she's not subtle enough for this role, I think.
Lea Salonga is an amazing singer, and she did a great job in the finale of this musical. The solos though, she just couldn't hit the low notes. I don't understand how people are saying she did such an amazing job when she struggled so much with the low notes that her voice even cracked in at least one spot. It'd have been much better if the director had raised it up an octive to a note she could hit with ease, because she does have a beautiful voice.
Good heavens she's AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Loved her as Eponine, and now as Fantine! She can do anything. Nick Jonas, watch this talented lady and learn how to act while you're singing!
She is incredible, no doubt... Lea is one of my favorite musical performers of all time, HOWEVER... I still prefer Ruthie Henshall in this role and Lea as Eponine... If I had never heard Ruthie Henshall in the role, I may have felt differently, but Ruthie just owned the role... BUT AGAIN, Lea is an amazing performer... All in all I prefer the 10th anniversary cast with the exception of Alphie Boe as Valjean... He was amazing... his acting, his singing, everything... much better than Colm W.
@kennyalancramer Agree with everything you wrote except for Boe being better than Colm W. Boe performed the part of Valjean in this concert. In the 10th Anniversary concert Wilkison was Valjean. Your entitled to your opinion, but, as far as I am concerned, Poe might make a good understudy to Wilkison.
wow.... I have major respect for Lea as an artist. Every time I watch her perform, it gives me chills.. I thought this performance was exquisite and beautiful....
I don't understand what's so special about her. She is a horrible over-actor and her voice doesn't carry any real emotion for me. She just sings and tries amateurishly bring some emotion to it, but that is just an epic fail. tRuthie is much, much better.
@HeigoOts harsh much! I really wouldn't say she's an over-actor. You can only do so much when standing at a microphone so you have to put more expression into your face surely
lea did justice to this song.. i watched patti, ruthie and elaine interpret this song and that just it--- interpretations but it seems to me they are aware of their real selves. with lea she lost herself into the character. it's a savage song of a ravaged life. lea's emotions encapsulated life's turmoils so exquisitely. i watched all her songs from this play and they made me cry... everytime.
BRAVO!!!!

Though I do love the diversity in the 25th!

I got goosebumps listening to the way she sings "but the tigers come at night,/ with their voices soft as thunder." Serious goosebumps too.

and eponine grew up to be cosette's mom.. :P
love lea salonga very much.. not just because she's a filipina.. i love her for her pure talent at singing and acting.. it was because of her that i fell in love with broadway musicals.. if i haven't heard her "on my own", i would not know the beauty and magic of musical productions..
i've always loved this song, no matter whose version.. it's so full of passion: love and pain.. i cried when i first heard it, and i cry still.. :')

I don't understand what's so special about her. She is a horrible over-actor and her voice doesn't carry any real emotion for me. She just sings and tries amateurishly bring some emotion to it, but that is just an epic fail. tRuthie is much, much better.

lea did justice to this song.. i watched patti, ruthie and elaine interpret this song and that just it--- interpretations but it seems to me they are aware of their real selves. with lea she lost herself into the character. it's a savage song of a ravaged life. lea's emotions encapsulated life's turmoils so exquisitely. i watched all her songs from this play and they made me cry... everytime.
