As someone who has been speaking English for a long time, even I have problems understanding what Carragher is saying. For Torres who at that point could hardly string a sentence together, having to listen to Carragher must have been just utterly mind boggling.

I would also argue he wouldn't have won PFA, European and World player of the year in 07/08, since his goals were what everyone talked about.
Why don't we cut Ronaldo's legs while we at it so Torres can have a chance to score more goals. Penalty's and free kicks are part and parcel of football. No one is given the divine right to score a free kick or pen. It's an art which some players have and others don't. Why don't we take away some of Liverpool's champions league cups cause they won them on PENALTY'S. I'm sure Liverpool fans celebrate and include Gerrard s free kicks and pens when he scores.

I don't like to bring stats up but it was you who bought them up. Ronaldo has the personal accolades to back up my view. I never brought up the goalscoring record i was merely on about who's the better player overall and that clearly is Ronaldo.
Going back on this a while guys (sorry). I don't think Ronaldo is the better player because he scores more from the wing since it's been well documented this season that Rooney has been pushed out onto the wing so that Ronaldo can be played centrally. He is very gifted with free kicks and pens and that it's part of his game, but that doesn't change the fact that he is given those chances to score - especially with the pens, where he's one on one with the keeper. Torres doesn't get that chance.
Combine that with his interchange play and his assists (in spite of us playing him as a lone central striker, where Ronaldo is playing in a front 3), along with the way he tracks back to defend which Ronaldo rarely if ever does, and I would consider Torres to be a more complete footballer and as such, the better player. Of course there are people who will disagree with that, but in my opinion and judgement Torres wins. And it's clear that it's not only me who thinks that.

Plus Ronaldo's not better in the air, Torres scores headers all the time, he wins games for us, leaves defenders for dead and is certainly stronger in a tackle than Ron. I think Torres is better in the air, better at tackling, a more natural finisher, better at taking on defenders, stronger, a more all round player with a much better attitude. Zidane, Maradona, Batigol and many others did not run back to get the ball but they are known as some of the best off all time.

You say many people think Torres is a better player who are they fans? I think the people best to judge are coaches/managers and players and in the past few season most of them have said Ronaldo is a better player thats why he has all these individual trophy's. I would rather accept the view of a pro then fans. These guys have had first hand experience and they chose Ronaldo. Maybe Ronaldo is told by Ferguson to stay higher up the pitch. Also Ronaldo was played majority as a wing forward rather then a traditional striker like Torres. Ronaldo had to come from wide to get the goals whereas Torres was played as a natural striker. You can say this balances the free kick/pen debate because Ronaldo was not a proper striker like Torres. Your point is Torres scored more goals from open play right? Ronaldo has kind of lost it in this last season, and was too obsessed with scoring goals on his own rather than helping his team. None the less, he managed to score 17 (?) gls last season, mainly on free kicks and pens.
I am one of those persons who think that if Torres had been fit all last season, Liverpool would have won it, he is THE matchwinner for Liverpool and his importance for the club connot be measured..

Also he was in shortlist for 08/09 PFA considering he had a "poor" season. Ronaldo is better at dribbling, heading, stronger scores more goals more assists and and has the personal trophy's to back it up. Torres had more assists than Ronaldo last season, and also had a superior scoring rate.
AND because Torres has a huge advantage in his mental part of the game.
Take this as an example:
If Ronaldo got tackled (fairly), he 9/10 lies down on the floor and acts extremely immature, screaming at the ref.
If that happens to Torres he gets up and tries to get the ball from the opponents..
This could sound a little biased, but I can assure everybody here that I am no LFC-fan

Torres scored 17 goals in 38 games.
That shows Ronaldo has a slightly better goal scoring record.
Ronaldo got 10 assists in champo and the prem.
Torres got 1 in champo and 1 or 0 in prem.
We can see that Ronaldo has a much better assists record.
Ronaldo is also the current world player and Europe. I don't like to use stats to compare who's better but these stats show Ronaldo done more considering you said Torres got more assists and a "superior" goal record.

Remove from Ronaldo's record the number he scored from taking penalties and free kicks. Torres takes neither for Liverpool. If Ronaldo hadn't been doing that for Manchester Utd, he wouldn't have won the Golden Boot in 07/08. I would also argue he wouldn't have won PFA, European and World player of the year in 07/08, since his goals were what everyone talked about.

Why don't we cut Ronaldo's legs while we at it so Torres can have a chance to score more goals. Penalty's and free kicks are part and parcel of football. No one is given the divine right to score a free kick or pen. It's an art which some players have and others don't. Yes but the fact is Ronaldo is a penalty/free kick taker for a reason. Ronaldo would have won the Ballon D'or even if you took his pens and freekicks away because he was a threat from anywhere in the pitch. Also he won the champions league which gave him a bigger chance to win it. If your bringing this up then we can say Macheda is a better striker then Shearer because he has a superior goals to game ratio then him in the prem. Ronaldo did not struggle to score away from home.

I have a job inside the PL-stats, so I think (and hope) that I am right on this one...
Torres played 20 games for Liverpool last season, scored 14 gls and had 3 assists in PL.
Ronaldo played 31 games for Manchester United last season, scored 18 gls and had 6 assists.
This is the right stats, no point arguing, Torres have the better scoring ratio, Ronaldo had a better assist ratio..
I want you also to think of that Torres did not get those months you mentioned, thats why he is better.

Going back on this a while guys (sorry). I don't think Ronaldo is the better player because he scores more from the wing since it's been well documented this season that Rooney has been pushed out onto the wing so that Ronaldo can be played centrally. He is very gifted with free kicks and pens and that it's part of his game, but that doesn't change the fact that he is given those chances to score - especially with the pens, where he's one on one with the keeper. Torres doesn't get that chance.

Combine that with his interchange play and his assists (in spite of us playing him as a lone central striker, where Ronaldo is playing in a front 3), along with the way he tracks back to defend which Ronaldo rarely if ever does, and I would consider Torres to be a more complete footballer and as such, the better player. Of course there are people who will disagree with that, but in my opinion and judgement Torres wins. And it's clear that it's not only me who thinks that.

In the 08/09 season Ronaldo played more on the wing if anything he played more centrally in the 07/08 season. An the reason why Torres is not given that chance is because Liverpool have a good set piece taker in Gerrard and Alonso. No one says Torres can't take set pieces - it's just that he doesn't, because at Liverpool Gerrard does. Torres used to take pens at least for Atletico. He has also played in different positions for Spain. His best is in front, just like you'd probably say Ronaldo is best on the wing. Plus Ronaldo's not better in the air, Torres scores headers all the time, he wins games for us, leaves defenders for dead and is certainly stronger in a tackle than Ron. I think Torres is better in the air, better at tackling, a more natural finisher, better at taking on defenders, stronger, a more all round player with a much better attitude. The tested the players by putting on some speed thing on them during a game. How does that work out whos the fastest because it was done at a football game where there are obstacles that will not determine the true outcome. They should just do it on a 100m track.
