Legalize but like Schiff said, make people get a permit to use them and take a test like you do when you get a driver's license educating yourself on safe use, side effects, etc.
To offset the extra hassle you'd get your drugs cheaper, cleaner and legal.
His main concern is being able to make money off of legalized drug use, not because he believes the war on drugs is immoral and that drug use is moral.
there would be no money to be made for prescription drugs, not for a private enterprise, not for the Gov. no matter how much the Gov would tax it, the losses from the treatment would offset any gains.
So what about cigarette use being way down over last decade with kids and adults while cannabis use has skyrocketed? One has had no arrests and the other?
Cig use is down because of education and the fact that it's been completely banned in most places making it a very inconvenient and expensive habit to have.
Not because it's legal. Cig use used be waaaayyyyyyy more prolific.
Marijuana use has gone up because that particular generation of weak-minded adults now make up the majority of the population.
If legalized, it's use would increase because doing dope would no longer be inconvenient.
I'm a little disappointed by Peter's answer. I'm glad Peter is against the WOD but I think he's being a little paranoid by saying that he would be scared to make it an issue in his campaign bc he's afraid drug lords will kill him. Ron Paul has not been killed by drug lords, and he makes his anti WOD position known. If you're running for office you have to have the guts to take positions like this. Does this mean if elected he'll vote for WOD bills bc he's afraid to be killed? Come on!
Sometimes its good to pick your battles. If you have a fighter in every corner you dillute your strength. I think its a wise political move on Peter's part not to make an issue out of everything, even though the WOD is moronic.
also, when prohibition was finally over, the buyer/pusher infrastructure for illegal alcohol was still in place. So I think the syndicates which had built up that structure, had to find new products to sell.
Schiff isn't just a great economist, but a brilliant political figure!

Peter is right though if drugs were legal you would see a huge improvement in the economy.

Alcohol use went up during prohibition because it was a time of economic growth, not because it was illegal.
Hey Peter, will you buy stock in companies that make Heroin for your kids babysitter?

But Pete would make more money.

@flanksteak4 Actually it's not an incoveniance at all to get pot. It is much more difficult to get cigs and alcohal when ur a minor then to get pot.
how many people will show up at ur house to deliver alcohal or cigarettes?

There are a lot of powerful people making a lot of money through the drug trade and have an incentive to keep drugs illegal.
