The platypus actually has nothing to do with the hate-y vibe of the song, which is directed towards one of Gilman Street's original owners, who was an open disliker of Green Day; he thought their sound was too pop-like.

Billie Joe only called the song "Platypus (I Hate You)" because he thought "I hate you" alone was a crappy name for a song, and he'd always wanted to call a song "Platypus".

So he has nothing against platypi.

@narcisistichater yeah pretty much everything up to American Idiot is kickass. 21st CB, while it has some nice songs, like East Jesus Nowhere and Horseshoes and Handgrenades, that style of music in the other songs just doesn't feel right coming out of Green Day. Green Day is a punk rock band first and foremost, and they should stay that way. After hearing Cigarettes and Valentines, I am actually very excited about their new album, though.

@procrastinator300...I agree, there were a few exceptions on 21CB where there were some great songs. Although it wasnt there usual style, they were quite good. Green Day was one of the first bands that actually got punk rock on the map, as bands such as the Ramones were before them, but they weren't commended for their work until very later on. I do love the fact they've gone back to their roots, i guess they wanted to try something different with 21CB but found their old style was best suited.
