I thought the '74 Steelers defense in the playoffs was when they were at their best. 119 total yards allowed in Super Bowl IX, and the only score Minnesota had was from a blocked punt...The Steel Curtain did not allow anything..Minnesota got inside the 5 once and coughed up the ball. I know the Rams and Vikes have 2 HOF each in their DL's but I still think the Steel Curtain is better. Even Time magazine thought so. They put the fear of God in QBs each Sunday from 1972-76, their best years.
Chuck Knoll coached at one time Ernie Big Cat Ladd who quit football for pro wrestling. And Ernie Fats Holmes also tried wrestling during his football career
Without question. They would dominate under any rules, dominate low-scoring defensive slugfests, dominate high scoring shootouts.Incredible-and I am a Northern California sports fan(poor me-these days). How dare people insult the NFL by rating the '85 Bears and '72 Dolphins higher than any of those 4 Steeler teams.Considering the competition this team had to beat for those Super Bowls compared to that of 1972 or 1985,it is depressing that those 2imitation champs r higher than any of the Steelers' 4
Well,I appreciate it. Unfortunately, for me, most people don't apologize to me. I frustrate people and lose credibility with them. To call '85 Bears and '72 Dolphins imitation champs-well I don't take it back. So the greatest defense since the Steel Curtain of the 70s? A tie between "83 Raiders and '86 Giants, with "00 Ravens,'02 Bucs, and '84 49ers close behind. Sorry, I am probably starting to either scare or bore you and all the other readers of this.
As you have seen that nfl films clip is the 76' Steelers defense was flat out nasty. To the 85' Bears & 00' Ravens they had to play with rules that gave the offense a huge advantage. To the Steelers credit in 78 & 79 they played with that bump coverage rule as well.
I honestly think that the 00' Ravens was the best defense i've seen (maybe not the season) in a playoff run, they knew damm well in their heads they couldn't be stopped.
IMO, the Ravens & Steelers are the best rivalry right now!
The Ravens fell just short. Last year in August, I went to Reno and bet $800 on Ravens to win SB at 70 to 1 odds ($56,000) and had someone to get the ticket off my hand for $24,000 had they just made the SB.I will always blame it on Ravens coach. At the end of the first quarter, with ball on Pitt's 35 yard-line on 3rd and 2 and 4th and 1, the legendary FB Lorenzo Neal was not even on the field for either play. He was not injured, just not used. That is where the game was lost as well as my bet.
Man that would have been nice, remember in 1996 when Jacksonville & Carolina both made their respective Conference Championship games, there was serious odds on those teams that year. Sorry about your luck. One more note that 2000 Ravens team had no offense, and If I can recall there were 3 to 4 games in a row that they didn't score a touchdown.
But that was with Tony Banks at QB.The 2000 Ravens had an underrated offense.Any backfield trio with Jamal Lewis,Priest Holmes, and FB Sam Gash is a lethal one. There was a double TE system with Shannon Sharpe and Ben Coates, and QB Dilfer throwing to Sharpe was an unstoppable combo in the playoffs-That's right! From there they had a couple of sneaky WRs in vintage Brandon Stokely, and even Quadry Ismael, and of course the great one-the sneakiest of them all,the MIGHTY FLEA-JERMAINE LEWIS.
raiders fan creed:
raiders defense better than steel courtain
raiders better team than steelers....
facts........
STEELERS DEFENSE WON 4 SUPERBOWLS IN 6 YRS RUN
RAIDERS NEVER BEAT PITTSBURGH ON THE ROAD FOR A TRIP TO SUPERBOWL
RAIDERS WON ONLY ONE SUPERBOWL ON THOSE 6 YRS PERIOD...

Interesting is that Roethlisberger and Bradshaw both had beards in their first super bowl wins.

Exactly what does that have to do with the NFL? You have heard my take on these Steelers, the '85 Bears, and the '72 Dolphins. what is yours?
