I saw Neblett and Pavarotti in Tosca at the Kennedy Center, cannot remember the date, but must have been mid to late '70's. She was the best Tosca I have ever seen or heard and he was also fantastic. She had a lot of personal problems that hindered her career. What a pity. When she was on, she was really great.
I got to see her live in Baltimore singing Leonore in "La Forza del Destino" back in the mid-80's. She was really fantastic. I think the fact that she is not more highly regarded in due more to personal problems than to her singing. Singing was something she really did well
Oh, I'm jealous you saw her live! Thank You so much for the comment.
There seems to be a conventional myth about CN that she burned out early. To me, some of her later stuff (like this and a '90 Norma) are equally wonderful.
Last person--I did not mean to remove your comment! I am sorry!! Oh, I would have LOVED to have seen that Thais (not for the obvious reason ... I'm not a guy LOL). I think Neblett at her best is fairly well underrated.
i just finished watching this complete performance and i am exhausted, buried in my seat. it was my first exposure to carol neblett and let me tell you: dayum! she is amazing! a truly fabulous tosca
well yes, it shows, if that performance is any indication she was one hell of a tosca! the rest of the cast was amazing as well, what an amazing night it must have been, even the audience seems to have trouble controlling themselves! funny that you mention that fanciulla, because in my college there's this guy who sells bootleg copies of operas and he has a copy of that one which im always seconds away from buying, but then think:"nah, who the hell is carol neblet?" well, now i know
There are several different live recordings of Neblett's Minnie. I would recommend all of them, as well as the video, in preference to the Mehta studio recording. There are a few excerpts on my channel.
I haven't started in on the other live Toscas yet ... time and money ;)
Do you have the whole thing? How can I get this? I had the pleasure of singing with both these great artists (in the chorus, of course). She pulled a great Verdi Requiem out of the hat as late as 1992. Sadly her prime was short due to many personal problems, but she was an early bloomer so we got her for quite a while.
Actually the best part is when they start clapping after about three bars of the "Vittoria:" sequence a little earlier. They're clearly having a blast.
You're welcome. You know, I've put up a bit of Neblett's Turandot if you're interested also ... I'm only sorry the sound's so bad, because it really is pretty amazing :)
Beautifully sung, and maybe some phrasing that I've not heard before!

I am SO glad--thanks for the comment. To me, it's a shame that this was such a signature role for her, yet there are no studio recordings.
If you liked Neblett, I would check out the Covent Garden *video* of *La Fanciulla del West.* It is not to be missed :)

I am so glad you enjoyed it. I think that we are very lucky to have this record of Neblett in one of her most famous roles.

I so appreciate the comment on this entry. I think she's one of the best Toscas, period (and yes, I include Callas in that).

Will do. I'm more of a Lehmann than a Jeritza person, but anyway, I think Neblett is right up there :)
