Tosca is the woman and she is the young guy in orange's (Cavaradossi's) lover. They hide a friend who is hiding from the police at the boyfriend's villa & when the chief of police (Scarpia) finds out, C. is tortured until T. tells where the friend is. She does, but when the police get there he's killed himself. T. makes a deal with S. not to kill C. in exchange for sex then kills S. before he rapes her. C. is still killed and T. jumps off a building, running away from the police.

Very true! Giuseppe di Stefano is the greatest in this.Through years years of searching and listenning I couldn't find a performance worth to compare to Pippo's version.

P.S. This aria by Di Stefano stunned me when I first listened it, and IT made me love opera.

Essentially a lirico-spinto tenor, Bergonzi was greatly admired during the peak of his career for his beautiful diction, smooth legato, warm timbre and elegant phrasing. This version is wonderful
