There is no pitching mound in fastpitch softball. They call it "the circle." When the pitcher is in "the circle" all runners who have ceased running must remain on their base or immediately return to a base. Unlike baseball, there are no leadoffs. The runners can only leave the base when the ball leaves the pitcher's hand. They can steal - but they have to wait until it leaves the pitcher's hand. As you may have guessed, stealing is very rare and very difficult.
