How much does your pack weigh? I currently have a full-sized back with external frame and I have 80 pounds packed. I weigh 220 pounds and 6'3 and I wonder if its too much?
Mine is a Carson.....can't find the model # but Bass Pro sold it and it only comes in blue now (mine is a dark blue)
Does anybody knows where i can get those in Europe? No store i have ever been to(?) has them and i found no online shops ether. Amazon.com doesn't ship them for some reason. Dang that sucks big time.
Nut, have you ever used the military issue Alice packs? Either the medium or large with the fame? I have both, and for what I paid and how much I can stick in them or attach to them they do me right. Once you attach the molle straps in place of the issue straps that is.
i modded a medium alice pack on a coleman external frame with the molle II shoulder straps and kidney pad..... what a blessing i still had that old piece of shit pack from boy scouts 20 years ago. i LOVE externals.. bah bah internal frames- they suck and dont hold up to the stress
In my opinion "bigger" isn't always better. I find that sure I carry more, but can pack too much and mule myself. a little smaller pack makes you more careful with what you load up. just FYI
I'm a complete and utter noob to the backpacking world. I plan on backpacking the states (and possibly beyond) soon, and your insights on which aspects of a pack to take into consideration are very helpful.
Note. Guys don't look for just this pack, look at what it has as feature because as i found out from buying my REI 40 liter pack is they are like boots you want them to fit well and feel well, or else they will be really annoying to wear once you have that weight in them. Because I tried the redwing and put 40 pounds in it and it didn't feel good and weight seemed to bear onto my shoulder a lot. This was do to the fact it wasn't a get size and fit of pack for my body shape and type.
Bought this identical pack on ebay for myself and a brand new tioga 5500 for my wife after watching this review about a year ago. These are awesome packs. I'm happy I got them, especially considering they're not being sold presently. You were also right about the sawvivor, sog flash ll, cs recon scout, and so many other purchases. I'm not a TNP'er or even a subscriber but, you've made our family hiking trips more fun and safe due to reliable equiptment. Thank you.
last year i loved kelty but now their colors are ugly and i was really disappointed when they did away with the tioga ( i think that this is the size) 5500 and that really made me mad because i was going to buy one but i guess i'll have to get a used one or one from an overstock place
really wish they would bring back the Super Tioga or at least a version very similar to it.For now i'm settling with a Jansport Carson external frame pack, i'm happy with it so far.
I'm buying a new external frame pack and the only offering that interests me on the kelty site is the trekker 65...no large tioga right now. Ant comments on the trekker
Great review. I have to agree with you on external frame packs often being better than internal frame packs..at least on well defined tracks..where there's no jumping and scrambling over boulders ect.. I love the way that the weight sits on your hips and is directed down your legs...almost floating there if you adjust it to take all the weight off your shoulders and back.. but you can tighten it up while walking to put more weight on your shoulders and rest your hips for a while.
i have a kelty redcloud 5600. its great, makes 70 pounds feel like 15. hugs the body perfectly and you can even bend the frame to you shape. ive had if for 5 years and i will always buy kelty ( if this pack ever "breaks", very unlikely ), the pack weighs 6 pounds alone, but its made for long trips and the weight distribution makes it feel like nothing. great packs
where can i find those timbuktu camera pouches? i have one that isnt timbuktu but it's built the exact same way from eastsports and i love it, i want to get a few more but im having no luck finding them!
A somewhat strange questions perhaps. What are the dimensions of the Kelty Tioga 5500 without stuff. Normally of course you would add stuff, but I have to get it first :-)
I'm trying to make an estimate of the costs when ordering this backpack and need to know what the packaging dimensions are to calculate the freight costs and have it send to The Netherlands. The same applies for the Kelty Trekker 3950 External Frame, that one I would like to have also.
@andrisig33 I would be glad to ask Nutn to check it for you but he is putzing around out in the great wide open. Have you tried asking Kelty? Their customer service may have the answer at hand. If that doesn't work, lemme know, and I will ask Nutn as soon as he checks in. -- Veri
Nutnfancy, you are such an inspiration to a fat, suburban, lazy bastard! I am about to go camping for the first time thanks to you. You are such a great dad! Should be so proud of yourself and "Suspect"! God Bless! And thanks for your vids! They are life changing!
Does anyone know of any retailers that sell these in europe? Or maybe a european manufacturer of external frame packs? Been looking for hours without succes
hey dude like ur vids i have the same kelty pack my dad gave it to me but i thought about it and the tunnel from the back to the inside would be perfect to run the hydration tube through again dont know if u knew that
Do you put your sleeping bag inside the bag or lash it to the outside? If you put it outside, how do you deal with rain? Just get a waterproof stuff sack?
osprey makes some great internal frame packs! with lots of versatility, so does gregory! they are nice packs! i have the newest version on the tioga cause it was cheaper with 5300 ci
Love the review.I am Looking for a Large External Frame pack. I have always preferd them to the internal frame sacks But i can find a good external frrame antwhere. All the shop in the UK seem to only stock internal frames.
I carry a Kelty Trekker 3950 cubic inch external framepack, and its way more comfortable than the internals in my opinion. I tried both on, I prefer the external. I like the weight up high, (im tall) so it helps. Go with what fits best, not what the industry pushes on ya =)
RootBoot22, do you find using a large external frame backpack is more difficult to maneuver with. I hear its supposedly harder to maneuver with an external frame pack, is this true?
NoTheocracy2008, I dont think its hard to maneuver my 3950 at all. I havent used the Tioga 5000 or a pack as big as that, but the overall size is not too much larger than what I carry now. The only problem I ever had was when I tried to go underneath a fallen tree, my pack got caught. But any pack would there lol otherwise its been awesome all around.
funny you should say about biased sales people. I was in an REI store last week and asked why they did not have any external frame packs. the salesmen kind of smerked and laughed under his breath and was like " dude, no one has carried them since the 70's" i almost felt embarassed but then remembered how bad internal frame packs suck, which just proved to me how ignorant the salesmen was. so i wrote him off asap and went about my buisness.
You mentioned that this is a 4750 cu-in backpack, while the new Tiogas are 5500 cu-in, but isn't that more of a function that the Super Tioga pack you are showing doesn't have a sleeping bag compartment while the newer ones do? I can see a sleeping bag compartment having 750 cu-in of space, so I doubt this pack is any smaller than the new Tiogas, it's more a function they put a sleeping bag compartment in to say that their pack is much larger.
the weight of a pack seems ridiculously heavier with an external frame than the internal frame. i too prefer and internal frame but for some it is different.
An external frame backpack is LESS heavy than an internal frame. My fancy internal backpack is pretty light at about 2.8kg. Still my 40 years old external aluminium frame pack of the same size weighs less than 1.8kg. That's more than 1kg off, and it is made of canvas, not light ripstop nylon. It is also much better to carry, it does not bulge, and your back is ventilated. What is development, really?
Dude those are kick ass guns! Do you hunt for fun? Suscribe me. My favorite gun that I use is an old fashion M-48A-1 rifle. It's my dad's but when we go deer hunting we use it. Tell me what ur guns are.
Very nice review...I think these mfg. need to start giving you this stuff for free just for the advertising. You got me thinking about the external frame pack. I haven't used one for 24 years now and other than the ALICE pack for the service I haven't used or even seen anyone using one for years. This isn't much of a news flash I'm sure but I thought they were a thing of yester year till this view.
sorry dude i know you said its your opinion but on later videos put in some good points for internal frame packs. you make it sound like internal frame packs suak. they really dont. again its opinion
I recently bought a super tioga, not very familiar with it yet. Can someone enlighten me to the purpose of the small aluminum U inside the main part of the pack? is it just to make it proportional when gear is in it? Can't figure out why it pivots and looks like it is supposed to be fastened. ???
Thanks Nuntnfancy for this review, I know a while back I mentioned backpacks and this series has been worth the wait.
I have always been a fastpacker and a minimalist, and a couple months back I picked up a Golite Quest, internal frame. Good pack for the POU, with a couple of exceptions.
After seeing the reviews you have done on backpacking I am seeing the light on going fully loaded. The Benefits are big. I can see myself this spring trying out your style.
instead of useing two pads, you should look in to big agnes. i have 2 and they are awsome. i perfer the new insulated ones they are just that much better, and they are 2.5" thick too.
Great Job,I might add some pointers:(1)use large garbage bag inside the pack and put everything inside the garbage bagged area. Everything will stay nice n dry in a bad down pour-especially food.(2)use bungee cords n extra bag full of bungees for whatever comes up.(3)para-cord extra length would be a good idea as well.(4)wrap that sleeping bag with your waterproof groundcloth.(5) First aid kit should be packed where it's best accessible and everyone should know where everyone's kit is packed!
Awesome video Nutn! I've had my Kelty Radial Light XLT external frame pack for years now. If I remember correctly, it is just over 7000 cubes! Sounds too big for most trips, but I have found just the opposite to be true. On shorter trips of say, 3-4 days, after you load it, ya just start yankin' on cinch straps (it's got eight of 'em) and everything stays very put. I totally agree w/ you on the external pocket issue. A must for propper organization. Thanks again Nutn!!
I have a CFP-90 military pack (it's internal), and now I am kinda thinking I should have gone with an external frame pack.
