I am a singer and I know how hard it is to be a believer in Jesus and be judged by others. I opened for Chaka Khan some years ago and had an opportunity to meet her. She is my favorite singer. So please forgive the mistake and keep up the good work!

Reading the comments posted makes me question why would did JESUS die on the cross and save us from our sins and people still passing judgment on others like they have it all together. Whoever invited her to sing probably was inspired by God as a means for the Spirit of God to get her attention with the very gift he imparted in her. Over the past few years she's been invited to sing gospel and I don't think its coincidence. We are living in the last days the Lord is seeking the loss and his way are not our ways. I was always a fan of Chaka out in the world. I prayed, because I loved her voice so much, that God would bring her over to this side, so we could enjoy her singing. So she could do what God made such a beautiful voice to do, God answers prayer.

You have to remember, Chaka is a FUNK singer...not R&B or Gospel...pure classic FUNK and Soul...these are classic Chaka vocals that she bring into anything she sings and for those who hates this are obviously not into Funk. I love this sound, its much different from the original but its not sung by a gospel singer, its sung by a Funk singer. Just like if a rock singer sung this it would sound much different. Anyways to sing a song of god is to sing a song to Him, so why hate it? Respect it.

Chaka's phrasing is impeccable. Her range daunts Karen Clarke's. She lacks the depth of emotion that Clarke possesses. The interpretations and arrangements are very different. Technically Chaka is clearly better. Any musician, including Karen, will agree. Gospel fans will appreciate Karen more because of their familiarity with her interpretation. Clarke is a fantastic artist who probably is flattered by the comparison.

I had the privilege of hearing Chaka sing this song live at a concert during the Taste of Chicago a couple years back and I gotta say I REALLY appreciated how she sang it! There is something special about a self proclaimed sinner singing this song, as opposed to the saints that claim to sing this. It adds a special poignancy, especially when it's from a vocal powerhouse like Chaka Khan...AND they don't see it comin', but the message comes across LOUD and CLEAR!

Chaka is one of the best singers, but gospel is not her forte. She said she didn't grow up in the black church. IMO it's obvious. She has the gospel voice though, just not the style.

I am a gospel singer, and have sang this very song. Of course I have also heard Karen Clarke Sheard sing it and she is outstanding in her delivery, but I must applaud Chaka because she gave it her all and from her heart and she did it well. Now to the haters, my question to you is - can you do it any better and in most cases the answer is no you can't. Give God the praise for someone like CK who is bold enough to sing the song period, she's not ashame to praise the Lord - Thats the point!

Chaka is not a Contralto (an Alto who sings against the high-translation:usually a 2nd Alto that can reach tenor range), she is truly a 1st Alto with a mezzo range for certain songs. Chaka did a good job on this song I would have lowered the key signature slightly for her in order to capture the true fullness of her powerful voice. She did her best, and that's all God requires.
And if you want to get into the spiritual side of things, I can tell you that if anything CHAKA is one with an awesome testimony! She has experienced the lowest of low and the wordly highest of high and lived to tell about it! She has truly been "saved" from a life of self destruction to a life of positive production. Through self introspection and healing, praise and thanksgiving she has overcome and I'm sure continues strive to be better everday!
Chaka is not trying to sound like Karen Clark Sheard! Both are great singers, and people need to stop being immature, and accept the fact that Chaka is praising God! I am tired of people trying judge her! Only God can judge people!
Why are people always hating on Chaka Khan! Chaka was not murdering this song, and in God knows that she was giving him praise! Chaka and Karen are two different singers. Chaka Khan puts her C.K. signature on songs, and she does not sing songs the same way. Chaka's voice has range, and she hits the highest notes with out struggling! Looks like Chaka is trying to perform a song she doesn't feel or want to sing. Whole performance looks a bit awkward and forced. The anointing is definitely missing. NOBODY can sing this song like Karen. Chaka has pipes but this song didn't work for her. I was so glad when the choir came in and brought the anointing and chill factor cuz Chaka was murdering this song and not in a good way. LOL

Whoever invited her to sing probably was inspired by God as a means for the Spirit of God to get her attention with the very gift he imparted in her. Over the past few years she's been invited to sing gospel and I don't think its coincidence. We are living in the last days the Lord is seeking the loss and his way are not our ways. Judging people is so ungodly and not Jesus at all.

You have to remember, Chaka is a FUNK singer...not R&B or Gospel...pure classic FUNK and Soul...these are classic Chaka vocals that she bring into anything she sings and for those who hates this are obviously not into Funk. I love this sound, its much different from the original but its not sung by a gospel singer, its sung by a Funk singer. Just like if a rock singer sung this it would sound much different. Chaka's phrasing is impeccable. Her range daunts Karen Clarke's. She lacks the depth of emotion that Clarke possesses. The interpretations and arrangements are very different. Technically Chaka is clearly better. Any musician, including Karen, will agree. Gospel fans will appreciate Karen more because of their familiarity with her interpretation. Clarke is a fantastic artist who probably is flattered by the comparison.

I had the privilege of hearing Chaka sing this song live at a concert during the Taste of Chicago a couple years back and I gotta say I REALLY appreciated how she sang it! I've been looking for a recorded version of it ever since although I thought she had just done it that one time for the concert. Thanks for posting this!

There is something special about a self proclaimed sinner singing this song, as opposed to the saints that claim to sing this. It adds a special poignancy, especially when it's from a vocal powerhouse like Chaka Khan...AND they don't see it comin', but the message comes across LOUD and CLEAR!

I find it amusing that people will so viciously criticize a woman singing to god. Aren't you supposed to be moved by its message instead of deciding who "sang better". Hell, I'm by no means Christian, nor do I even believe in god, yet I appreciate her version of this song and I feel the emotion in it, yet so called "christians" argue about who out sang who, missing the point entirely. Isn't that Jesus fellow supposed to teach you about being a better person? Some of you missed class apparently.

Awesome, Chaka was real. To allow yourself to be used by God in this way no matter what, is subject to haters. They WISH they COULD SANG. Also, this ain't Karen's song nor Chaka's, it's GOD'S. To him be the GLORY. GOD BLESS us ALL.

Chaka is one of the best singers, but gospel is not her forte. She said she didn't grow up in the black church. IMO it's obvious. She has the gospel voice though, just not the style.

There is so much criticism toward Chaka from the gospel fanbase here on You Tube. This is not suprising at all. Hypocritical MFs need to stop JUDGING people and trying to create drama between Chaka & Karen, who are dear friends. Chaka Khan doesn't have to compete or prove anything to you or anybody else. @Kdara I am not religious, but I believe when an artist sings "anothers" song(s) it's due to "respect" and not for pride nor vanity. This is Chaka's way of paying respect for the song and the artist(s) who(m) sang it before. Shame on who are trying to inspire hatred and rage in he gospel!

You better preach! I agree 100% People need to stop comparing them because God uses them both to help heal the world through music. I've seen this video hundreds of times and it helps me when I hear Chaka SANGIN this song. I will not even waste the time of starting an arguement with you for the simple reason that I see (from looking at the recent comments) you're the type that lingers around a video (THAT U DID NOT EVEN POST!) and make commentary, criticizing every person who voices thier opinion on how badly she sounds singing this song. I am a gospel singer, and have sang this very song. Of course I have also heard Karen Clarke Sheard sing it and she is outstanding in her delivery, but I must applaud Chaka because she gave it her all and from her heart and she did it well. Now to the haters, my question to you is - can you do it any better and in most cases the answer is no you can't. Give God the praise for someone like CK who is bold enough to sing the song period, she's not ashame to praise the Lord - Thats the point!

I remember who things she's a 1st alto. But I'd go with 2nd or mezzo soprano. Chaka did sound good. I was impressed vocally. The anointing did appear to be missing. But maybe she hasn't gotten to the place in her walk where she understands the consecration needed to MINISTER to people.

Chaka is not a Contralto (an Alto who sings against the high-translation:usually a 2nd Alto that can reach tenor range), she is truly a 1st Alto with a mezzo range for certain songs. Chaka did a good job on this song I would have lowered the key signature slightly for her in order to capture the true fullness of her powerful voice. She did her best, and that's all God requires.

And if you want to get into the spiritual side of things, I can tell you that if anything CHAKA is one with an awesome testimony! She has experienced the lowest of low and the wordly highest of high and lived to tell about it! She has truly been "saved" from a life of self destruction to a life of positive production. Through self introspection and healing, praise and thanksgiving she has overcome and I'm sure continues strive to be better everday!

Why are people always hating on Chaka Khan! Chaka was not murdering this song, and in God knows that she was giving him praise! Chaka and Karen are two different singers. Chaka Khan puts her C.K. signature on songs, and she does not sing songs the same way. Chaka's voice has range, and she hits the highest notes with out struggling! Chaka is praising God, and people need to respect that!

NOBODY can sing this song like Karen. Chaka has pipes but this song didn't work for her. I was so glad when the choir came in and brought the anointing and chill factor cuz Chaka was murdering this song and not in a good way. LOL
