Ppl shudn't compare the godfather to goodfellas. They offer two different perspectives on the mob from two different viewpoints. I also hate comparing goodfellas to casino which ppl do. Goodfellas was about a lifestyle of an associate, casino was more of a natural flowing story about cause and effect. Overall, i think i prefer the casino style to goodfellas, but goodfellas had better individual scenes.

You're right about Goodfellas and The Godfather not being very comparable but in a lot of ways Goodfellas and Casino are the same movie. There are so many similiarities, from the character narration to the extensive soundtrack to the end scene. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's just that Scorsese used the same forumla for Casino that he used for Goodfellas because it worked.

ur right that casino and goodfellas are similar in that they both have the distinctive scorcese style. but in terms of the actual movie, i was saying that casino was more of a story about las vegas and the mob influence of vegas. I think goodfellas was more about a lifestyle, specifically relating to henry's lifestyle. The beg of casino even says, this is what happened and this is a movie about how it happened. Opening of goodfellas is actually a narrative of henry's life experience.

it's tough to compare the two. godfather is a much more serious movie that focuses on the structure of a mob family. goodfellas is a somewhat more upbeat view of a member of family. the godfather is probably a better made movie, but goodfellas is far and away more entertaining and i would watch it over the godfather. both are fantastic movie though.

Both Godfather and Godfather II won best picture. Goodfellas is up there, but its not better than either of those films.

Also interesting to see how many people in Goodfellas were later cast in The Sopranos. Initially Ray Liotta was even offered the role as Tony Soprano.
