this was recorded at the area one tour glen helen blockbuster pavilion devore ca august 5th,2001 this was the only and last time it was played by new order and moby on vocals..
Well this is a very good version I think. I mean, it is very much in keeping with the Joy Division style...you know, you feel the tension bottling up until it explodes at the end. And Moby does some nice screaming at it's peak. You'll see a similar technique in 'Transmission' with 'And we could daaaaaance'.
definetly a tribute... no one can ever duplicate the original with any cover thats just the way it is n always will be,, but i gotta give moby credit 4 he always covers this song he keeps ian alive, n he did a great job in this version with ians original band mates, i tip my hat 2 him!
Ha ha They killed the bass indeed, I agree with seventhsun, isnt this New Order doing an intrepretation of the song for the 24 Hour Party people film, with Moby singing? They have every right to do what they want ...... its their song!!
I love JD to death but I am VERY open to covers. In fact, I love most covers. But this is appauling. Moby does not do it justice, IMHO. I am soo sorry folks. x
no mention of Joy Divison, it's Moby and New Order there cannot be another JD so it is tribute, a good one too. The band did a good job of carrying Moby- he gave it a good shot but he lacks the desparation of the young man, half his age who was
struggling with some issues I don't believe Moby has had to deal with.
@lashwhip I doubt Moby has had similar issues Ian had, but I disagree with you on a point: I think in this performance Moby does capture the tone of endless pain that is evident in the lyrics, in bits such as: "a loaded gun won't set you free / so you say" and "the strain's too much, can't take much more". I believe he's understood the meaning of these lyrics and IMO does his best in trying to capture that in his vocals.
haha, jesus. it's the same shit with every cover on youtube.
yes people, you are not making any astute observations by informing the viewers that the "original is better"...NO FUCKING SHIT.
you mean to tell me Ian Curtis was better at singing his own song, that he wrote, and created? wow. that's astounding! what a fascinating opinion! I'm sure Moby would be the first to say the same. I would call it more of a tribute than a cover, and certainly nobody was looking to outdo the original.
@seventhsun1982 agreed,,, however i couldn't care less WHO wrote it or sung it originally, the first version i heard was from moby on his I like to score album and i loved that track the way it sounds on that album and that album ONLY
@seventhsun1982 Whoa really now? but seriously you do have a point. Everybody will always, and I mean ALWAYS, argue that the original is better. It gets really repetitive and annoying sometimes hearing it over and over again. Thanks man. =)
@seventhsun1982 Well, Bob Dylans songs most of the time sound better (to me) reworked than original, and I can think of a few other cases too... but all in all these are the exceptions that prove the rule that originals are better.
It's a hard song to sing. Moby is singing his heart out trying to match. Total success as far as I concern it. At the end you can hear the audience cheering that my friend John is being thrown out of the studio.
I won't blame Moby... I think his cover is one of the best covers I've ever heard of Joy Division... obviusly nothing to do with the original one and all-mighty Ian Curtis... but is still a good one, a very respectful tribute to Joy Division and Ian Curtis. I must say this one sounds very "metal"... I preffer his own acoustic cover.
The music is not bad (original is better!), but the vocals of Moby are not suitable with the original vocals of "the almighty" Ian Curtis... No questions, Moby is a good singer but NEVER in the same kind like IAN...
from the 24HPP OST booklet: "(...) At the Moby LA gig in the summer of 2001, Moby, John Frusciante of the Chili bunch and Billy the bald one from the Pumpkins suggested that they join the support act in a rendition of said Joy Division classic. Since the support band were Joy Division/New Order it's rewarding to know their initial reply was "how does it go?" (...)". Hope that makes it clear.
Deathcamp Project made a good cover of the song too.

What is this? If you don't have anything to add to a song, you should stay away from covering it.
This is just the original one made worse.
