It's amusing how the story involes Guybrush trying to find The Ultimate Insult™. This cutscene alone IS The Ultimate Insult™ to every Monkey Island fan that's familiar enough with the 3 earlier games.

As a Monkey Island fan, I wanted nothing more than to love this game, and was prepared to forgive anything... I thought... but between this, robot monkey insanity and various ideas and environments that felt tacky and out of place in a MI game, it seemed clear to me that the writers of EMI did not hold the earlier games as dearly to their hearts as many fans did (at least not in the same way).

Was it so hard to create new plot depth without stampeding through our memories of the earlier games?

So, what happened to his shipmate who hung himself on Monkey Island?

Or what happened to the story of how he took the Sea Monkey to Monkey Island by using a voodoo recipe (which was used by Guybrush in Monkey Island 1)

Also, how did he get from Dinky Island in Monkey Island 2 to Monkey Island?

This cutscene has way too many retcons, it represents how bad Monkey island 4 was.

Pay attention You will see that after the whirlpool,Herman does NOT wash ashore alone on Monkey Island. What happens is that he washes ashore somewhere(he never says that he washed up on MONKEY island)with amnesia and so bedraggled that none recognizes them. He hears about the treasures of Monkey Island and he and his friend decide to sail off and find them.Why did he return to find the secret of Monkey Island when he'd already found Big Whoop?He had forgotten he'd found it (the amnesia) get it?

That has been suggested before, but he clearly says "First, let me tell you how I ended up here on MONKEY ISLAND" (0:08-0:11). If the island he washed up on was Melee Island, then he never explained how he ended up on Monkey Island, which was the point of the story.

Secondly, if he washed ashore on Melee Island (which I assume you're implying since that's where the Sea Monkey came from), wouldn't the people recognize their governor?

He ended up on an island (not neccecerly melee) AFTER going to monkey island the first time. (with amnesia) but then goes back to monkey island and finds the secrets, goes and then ozzie sends him to the wirlpool after ozzie gets told about all the secrets.

And LeChuck was bragging about it being HIM that sent him at the wirlpool.

If he did land on melee, they DID recognise the govener, but he waz just like "WTF since when am I the govenor?" The game really SHOULD have been expained better

I think you're really confused, but there's no argument. The island Herman says he lands on is Monkey Island, hence why he said "First, let me tell you how I ended up here on MONKEY ISLAND." If the island he ended up on was not Monkey Island as you suggest, then he didn't tell us how he ended up on Monkey Island... which was the entire purpose of the story.

The writers messed up, that's really all there is to it.

there are hidden tunnels underneath the islands that go to and from: monkey, dinky, and melee island. thats how he got from dinky to monkey

I think I may have an explanation for the guy who hung himself accidentally. The partner was probably another competitor in the race who was sharing a room with Herman before the race. Ozzie must have pushed him in along with Herman.

I like to imagine their was a Herman Toothrot and this Horatio found something about him and thought he was him

SuperSmasher1's explanation is the only one I think is feasible; It's been awhile since I played the games, but I can't dispute the idea that there may have been a Herman that Horatio just assumed the identity of. The other theories just seem to be futile attempts to draw some consistency from bad writing.

Maybe the REAL Herman Toothrot is back on Dinky Island? That actually does make sense, but Herman recognizes Guybrush after you whack him with the milk bottle, and says that he's the one who found the banana picker, so that would really have to be Herman, unless Herman in MI1 is really Horatio and the REAL Herman is stuck on Dinky the whole time...

This is really confusing. Even then it still doesn't make sense...
