We do this song for high school pep band sometimes. Frankly, I think I like our pep band version more. We have a senior trumpet named Logan and on the longer notes he blares the trumpet to the point you hear him more than anyone else. I play the bass part, but oh well.

Also, I don't think this is a good song for those of you saying you play it for jazz band. Jazz band should have some old time jazz that features trumpets, saxes, and bass to a 'du' beat instead of 'tu'.

My problem is not technical. i just think that the conductor is being all Berlin Philharmonic. Jazz, and especially this kind of jazz was written and performed by rough ready guys. If you want people to do it well, even kids, they have to be encouraged to break loose a little.

I agree with the people that said that they went off beat at times, the dynamics were poor, and the improvisation could improve. But you have to give them credit and respect that they can actually play their instruments (some better than others). The guy who did the first sax solo was excellent! I play grade 6 sax and in our band we played "Peter gunn theme". There could definitly be some vibrato. They are very talented musicians.

Not that bad, but I agree with that person who said bad improvising skills. Sure, I have the easy part as that bass part, but they should have practiced more and the conductor should have tought them how to do proper jazz band first.

This is what happens when jazz students are oblivious to chord changes / chord tones, and can't hear the notes in their head before they play them. There are no dynamics in their solos. There is no state-repeat-vary, 7-3 lines, just a plain blues scale. These poor students were taught improvisation the wrong way.

The kids did well, but for a song like this they should be hellfired up! You get this feeling they've not been loosened up properly until half way through. Five minutes of inchoate yelling beforehand would address that.

I thought these kids were great. ...It's very hard to get a high-school or middle-school band together. There are always gonna be some flubs, but the kids in this band didn't flinch or faulter when a "flub" occured. The beat and the song just kept pluggin' along right in "the groove". The band as a whole sounds pretty good for middle-school. The kid who soloed first looked very nervous, loosen up man! The two alto soloists had pretty decent tone for being in middle-school and a better improvisation vocabulary will come with time. The trumpet soloist was very good as well and his vocabulary will also expand in time.
