Wow, I've seen that whole list except for "Red Belt" and "From Where I Stand", the man has good taste. PS-Synecdoche, NY- One of the most under-rated, unknown movies of last year that most people will either hate or love. Definitely requires 2 viewings.
If you like Cloverfield and Blairwhich, you should realy see REC. They did a shitty american remake of it called Quarentine, but REC is in the same style as the others but a horror and VERY well made.
Yes, someone else has almost certainly said this (I can't be bothered to check) but Bill Maher is not an atheist. He rails against religion at every opportunity, but then will say things like "I do believe in God, yes" and "I don't like certainty about the next life because we can't know". I prefer Penn Jillette's view on the existence of God because it has none of the childish wish-thinking Maher still displays. So a Penn & Teller movie on religion would be most welcome.
I can't say whether or not Maher believes in ghosts... I've followed a lot of his stuff very closely and never heard anything like that but I could be missing something.
Like at least one other person has said - to clarify I know that now Maher does not classify himself as an atheist, or to be clear not a person who "believes there is no god". He just simply admits to not knowing.
Quibbles aside (any independent-minded person will have them if they watch the movie) hopefully we can all agree (Penn included!) that the final monologue was great, and presenting a completely reasonable viewpoint that religion has the power to be mankind's downfall.
It has the potential to continue to be extremely dangerous and deadly on a wide scale. Skepticism is wiser and safer.
I love both Bill maher and you. Penn. but Bill does not call himself an atheist. He has atheistic type beliefs but he says "I dont know" and claims to be more agnostic. don't shoot the messenger, im just saying. Besides. I like you more anyway, bill can't do magic.
Agnostic only answers the question if one can know or not. Everybody is agnostic. Bill is not answering the theological question of whether he believes or not. He has been avoiding answering that question for a while. However, if push comes to shove he'd probably say he was a non-believer. Come on Bill, get off that fence!
Bill Maher beat you to the chase on making an Atheist movie, so how about you make a "the government totally sucks" movie? I think that's as natural an extension of Bullshit! as a move about religion would be. A lot of Bullshit! episodes are about why big government is bullshit and you present the argument for smaller government in a very convincing way. One day I'd love to see that kind of movie. Penn & Teller: The Government is Bullshit!
I mostly agree with your opinions on those movies. I kept saying movies in 2008 weren't too great, but looking back at it now... they were pretty darn good.
Religulous was awesome, an absolute Must See movie.Extremely hilarious but I would have prefered it if Penn and Teller did their own version of it cause they are awesome at exposing Bullshit.
I don't understand. This is a list of movies you saw in the theater this year? Children of Men, Bank Job and Cloverfield weren't 2008. You're talking about movies you saw this year in your home theater?
Well, I'm happy to hear that Penn is becoming more comfortable with doing videos here. I personally didn't care for Maher's work...he strikes me in the wrong way. Penn and Teller...I admit I may have a soft spot for them that I allow their more...confrontational methods of putting out their viewpoints and the fact that they often have a good point. Maher however...I just don't care of the guy.
I've heard Bill Maher say on a couple of occasions on and off his show that he's not an Atheist. I'm not sure what category he puts himself in, besides being anti-religion. Maher and P & T should work on an anti-religion project together, that would be great.
If you have any questions about how Penn sees your comments/emails or if he is watching these videos after they have been posted please see the following:
Nah.. Mahr is a devout atheist, He like me and the rest of the world, he doesn't know, The religious claim to know ALL THE ANSWERS to EVERYTHING to give people a place in the world and to give them security, Anyone that doesn't believe in the existence of a god is an Atheist, That is Mahrs position, Until he gets evidence he's an atheist that is the most common atheistic position, Then there is strong atheism which is like saying you KNOW there is no god anywhere in the universe.
Perhaps he means that Maher isn't fully applying the logic that leads him to Atheism. While it's true that Atheism only necessarily means that you don't believe in any Gods, if you follow the logical conclusions of Atheism, it seems that you will also find that there is no proof of other supernatural or paranormal entities either. Maybe Penn was reflecting on that incongruity.
Tangentially, the last time I heard, Maher referred to himself as an Apatheist.
I loved Religioulous. You should still make a Bullshit movie based on religion. I would go watch that in a heartbeat. I don't even think Bill Maher would even mind. He'd be quite honored, I would assume.
Because wasn't that also his final message that we should start voicing and standing up to these kooks that believe in an end game otherwise we're too are destined to part of their screwed up, self fulfilling hyprophesy whether we like it or not?
I'm so happy someone else saw Cloverfield as an art type movie - everyone was looking at me like I was crazy when I said that after I saw it the first time. I would have expected to see that movie at Angelica more than at a regular theater. I liked it more on the small screen, though, becasue I had to take sea sickness pills (really - I had some in my purse from a recent scuba trip) in the theater!
Why didn't you mention the Wrestler? That sounded like it was the best film you saw in years when you mentioned it recently. Or does it already belong to 2009?
I thought Penn was going to say that one of his disagreements with Bill Maher has to do with Maher being on the board of PeTA. Personally, I think that makes Maher a moron.
molo penn & robbie! (hello in xhosa) very cool video. haven't seen any of the movies mentioned and now my interest's been piqued. i was wondering why i like penn so much and i realized that he reminds me of a really good friend i had when i was sixteen yrs old. he is so like that big, smart, funny girl, right down to the punk nailpolish... question, if i may; how's the xhosa coming? can you answer this xhosa question> unjani?
Bill Maher says that he is NOT an atheist because it mirrors the certainty that there is a god with the certainty that there is no god. However, Maher has not given any claims that would support a god existing.
Maher's right, the only rational position is technically agnosticism. But you can still be pretty damn sure there's no god and fall into that catergory. :D
He doesn't use a weird definition of atheist. Atheist simply means you do not believe in a god. It does not mean that you believe there is no god. If you are what is generally considered "agnostic," then really you are an agnostic atheist. It means you do not know, but you still believe there is a god out there.
When I'm looking at a movie to go see I usually look at the rating first and if its PG-13 I wont go to it..Be like fuck that shit I'll just download it.But the movie taken was good even though it was PG-13
uh.. Children of Men was like 2006... lol, Cloverfield ruled! Awesome to see in theaters especially when you didn't really know what it was all about, good times
after his glowing endorsement of "The Wrestler" in a previous video how can he have forgotten to mention it here? Or is he counting it as a 2009 film since it is still in theaters?
He got that as a screener copy for award consideration and must not have seen it in the theatre. He mentioned moving it up the stack after David Blayne told him Mickey Roarke was the automatic Oscar winner. Remember? ;)
summer of 2008 had a whirlwind of good movies; iron man, indiana jones, the dark knight, and tropic thunder were all good movies. my personal choice would expelled: no intelligence allowed and an american carol. really good in my opinion.
yea, agree. that's an awesome premise for a movie: i don't know jack shit about science, therefore science is false. yep, that ben stein is a genius :)
Children of Men was amazing. Never has the death of a minor character affected me more then any time any one got killed in that movie. And i really wanted to see Religioulus. Wife a Catholic though so it may be hard to convince her to rent it.
Great review! As far as Bill Maher goes, he's agnostic, as I am. How can one say that they know for sure there is no god whatsoever? As far as world religions go, no I do not think that a god wrote any kind of book. I think that if there is a "god", that it/he/she is beyond human comprehesion. It just "is", if you will
The word atheist doesn't mean you know there is no god. It means that you don't believe there's a god. Just as you're probably an a-unicornist and an a-leprechaunist, even though you don't know for certain that those creatures are mythical.
The word agnostic means you don't believe it's possible to know if there's a god. The two words describe different characteristics, and they're not mutually exclusive.
hey penn, even though you said that you normally dont read comments, i just want to say that i really love your videos and P&T bullshit. you've taught me a lot of stuff, and you influence me to speak my mind
Penn doesn't read the comments on YouTube but I coallate and give him your comments and emails. He then responds through a viewer mail. Penn doesn't look at the live channel because he doesn't want to see himself and then start censoring himself because of that.
For some reason all of these videos just stop after a few minutes. It's just penn says that this happens to.

Aw, come on Penn. Don't tell me you're one of those kill joys who can't possible function without 100% strict adherance to reality.
I say if nothing happens in your story that couldn't happen in reality, you're wasting the medium.
lordthawkeye 2 years ago
I think his point about Iron Man was that it was a SUPERHERO movie without anything supernatural. Just like Dark Knight.
I think he was pointing out that it made it different from the other superhero movies out there. It makes it more human.

Your movie would be different than Maher's, even if you had the same script.
And, now you (two) can learn from Maher's "mistakes". Maher plans to make an eight hour version for HBO, why wouldn't you do the same for Showtime?

after his glowing endorsement of "The Wrestler" in a previous video how can he have forgotten to mention it here? Or is he counting it as a 2009 film since it is still in theaters?
webhed003 3 years ago
He got that as a screener copy for award consideration and must not have seen it in the theatre. He mentioned moving it up the stack after David Blayne told him Mickey Roarke was the automatic Oscar winner. Remember? ;)

"Children of Men" technically is a 2006 film, but I certainly agree that is fantastic. It may very well be among the top ten films of this decade.
The scene from "The Dark Knight" with the convict making the right choice almost made me cry too.
truthseeker1972 3 years ago
Penn's qualification is that it has to be a movie he's seen in an actual theater. Anything else ends up on his list of videos.
CalebTurberville 3 years ago
Just to clarify: Penn obviously saw Children of Men in a theater in 2008, so it ended up on his list.

fuck you penn! dont tell me what movies to go see; jk

summer of 2008 had a whirlwind of good movies; iron man, indiana jones, the dark knight, and tropic thunder were all good movies. my personal choice would expelled: no intelligence allowed and an american carol. really good in my opinion.
tigertank06 3 years ago
Yeah expelled was a good one. I haven't laughed that hard in ages.

yea, agree. that's an awesome premise for a movie: i don't know jack shit about science, therefore science is false. yep, that ben stein is a genius :)

Children of Men was amazing. Never has the death of a minor character affected me more then any time any one got killed in that movie. And i really wanted to see Religioulus. Wife a Catholic though so it may be hard to convince her to rent it.

I'm usually "with you" about 95-100%, but I could argue with so much of what you said in this video.
-Very shocked-

You as Judy Jetson? Does that make you president of the Jet Screamer fan club? (Dang...Now I have Eep Op Ork Ah Ah going through my head...)
I loved how tight of a movie the Dark Knight was. For all that was going on it kept the story on track. It made me a proud Batman fan again.

LOL, Judy Jetson? I didn't think I'd like Cloverfield much, but I did.

Ricky Jay was great in Redbelt. Also if you like "found movies" you should check out The Last Broadcast if you haven't already seen it.

hey penn, even though you said that you normally dont read comments, i just want to say that i really love your videos and P&T bullshit. you've taught me a lot of stuff, and you influence me to speak my mind
Atrain1828 3 years ago
Penn doesn't read the comments on YouTube but I coallate and give him your comments and emails. He then responds through a viewer mail. Penn doesn't look at the live channel because he doesn't want to see himself and then start censoring himself because of that.
pennsays 3 years ago
k, cool thanks
Atrain1828 3 years ago
Censoring himself? I don't get it. Can you explain the last part about him not looking at the live channel?
GreyAutumn 3 years ago
You can and should still make your version of the movie~!
