  • I would gladly take another Ported Rotary Engine. 1990 RX-7, 240 Horse @ stock redline (no turbo), and less than 100 torque. She was pretty quick. Rev her up to 9000 RPM and she's a monster. A Monster who enjoyed eating many cars with far more power and torque (IE Corvettes, Mustangs and 2 different Grand Nationals - One GN did turn up his boost on the rematch for the win though. But seeing as he had well over 300 horse stock to my 240...

    What kind of Corvettes were you beating with a 1990 RX7 with less than 100 FT.-LBS? I'm not even sure how you were achieving that type of power, will, under-achieving. I just looked at some specs, it says a stock 1990 non turbo RX7 has 138 FT.-LBS, and runs a 16.5 quarter mile.

    16.5's in perfect conditions, that's blazing fast! You'd have a chance against a 1953 Vette. They ran 17's.

  • kcole939 - The corvettes were C5's and the drivers varried greatly (most could not drive them well, but not all). Having no torque has bennefits, its effortless to get a good launch (esp. w/ 245 ZR's).

    To make the power took 3 things - Enlarging Intake ports, a larger exhaust and rev her beyond redline.

    The new RX8 engine is very different. Its much better for the avg person, but crap for an enthusiest (when compared to the older 13B).

  • Driving the modded engine was quick @ redline. @ 9k it was FAST.

    Also she had no issues burrying the stock speedo 260km/h (162.5mph) and was exceptionally well mannered and smooth when doing so. Rotary Engines WERE race engines. Check out the new Norton nv588 race bike

    Have you seen the guage cluster on an RX7? The Center gauge is the Tach, not the speedo :)

    I'm not a drag racer, I like speed and corners. I did go to the track once, did 5 runs, best of which was around 13.8

  • @kcole939 ~ When you make your power @ 9000RPM you don't usually concern yourself with torque. a BRidge ported (13B - S5) rotary engine screaming @9k with an exhaust, intake and ECU tune should make 240 whp. Which Which with nice tires gives you a shot at a hitting a sub 14 second 1/4 mile. Torque is lame. Odds are you know nothing about a Rotary engine. For every revolution of the engine the 'crank shaft' spins 3 times.

  • @kcole939 So when the Engine spins @ 9000RPM the crank is spinning at 27,000RPM. Toqrue means nothing above 20,000RPM. IT's also why 240whp is enough to beat up on the avg Grand National.

    Making peak horse power and torque at a higher RPM allows us to take better advantage of gearing (in regards to performance). This is a mathamatical fact.

  • @the74rrhotline Torque means nothing above 20,000 RPM? With 0 LB-FT of torque, you have 0 horsepower. That is a mathematical fact. Horsepower = torque X engine RPM / 5,252.

    Thank you for showing me that you're just another random kid on Youtube, with no car, and just a faint bit of knowledge that means nearly nothing. 9,000 engine RPM = 27,000 crank RPM? RPM are measured AT the crank. And yeah, because without torque, you surely can overcome the inertia to even obtain an engine speed of 20K.

  • @kcole939 Thanks for noticing I look young but I'm actually a licensed tech in Ontario, Canada. 1HP can also be expressed as the ability to lift 33,000 lbs 1 foot, in 1 minute. This was decided as a mathematical expression for the amount of work and average horse can do for an 8 hour shift. I understand the relationship of HP and Torque and how they always intersect at 5,252. Also I like how turbo cars have so much torque down low.

  • @kcole939 This is why my 89 Skyline GTS-t type M (Automatic) was fast as fuck. bout 240 horse also, single turbo, 4.10 lsd rear end with REALLY long gears and the torque to make it work so well.

    Just picked up an 03 Audi RS-6 from the USA about a month ago. 420 ft lbs of torque from 1950 - 5600RPM. I do appreciate torque, I just find motors that need to sing at high revs to be quick MORE FUN! Torque can be fun for power slides.

    One day I would like to have a stable of cars for myself. Not necessarily anything expensive, but I think it would be absolutely amazing to have 6 - 10 cars to choose from (even if some are only worth $1000!)
