BR Standard 2mt 78018 (from the above film) is currently undergoing a full overhaul in Darlington, the locomotive belongs to the Darlington Railway Preservation Society.
Trains now come to a stand when they see a littlest bit of snow fulling but back then that got state to work to help the train and get them running agen as soon as possible.
Interesting piece of footage.I'm an active Belgian member of two British train sites? Could I upload this video please. The two sites are "Railway World tv" and "Steam tube".I will certainly mention my source!
just think an abandonded engine may be ruined with water freezing in the pipes and boiler unless they drained whole thing and the drivers having to stick their heads out of windows!! frozen faces!!
My father was the engine driver talking to his fireman and on the clip before they go over Belah Viaduct on the way up to Stainmore Summit from Kirkby Stephen East shed (12D). Belah had one of the few wrought and cast iron tubular viaducts on BR.
In this film they had three locomotives close coupled with two 20 ton snowploughs one of which can be found at Eden Valley Railway.
My all time favourite British Transport film, probably because it's my home turf and I can just remember the "old North East" running down from Barnard Castle, via Stainmore to Kirkby Stephen East, Appleby East and finishing up in Penrith.
When men were men, too: "We just get stuck in and dig oursleves out" - and not a hard hat or fluoresecent jacket in sight!
Just a great video. One important aspect: Railways are rarely affected by bad weather unlike Roads. Today the M62,: grid-lock...whilst the Transpennine express on time!!
theres railways closed in the north east matey. between middlesbrough and redcar and the mainline at thirsk between york and darlington. the road now running where this track once did, the a66, is as far as i know open.
but you are right. villages in the dales get cut off for days now if the snow sweeps in. they never used too when they had railways.
and what is going on, here in co.durham we have had snow fall every day since december 18th.... and yet more tonight. the main east-west roads north of the m62 have been closed for days.
and the whole of barrow in furness is meant to go and watch football in sunderland this weekend!
wow what is all that white stuff? never seen it before ;)
can barely believe we used to get snow like that, mind you that line has long since been demolished - the a66 which follows the route of it over stainmore pass does get closed from time too time, very rarely though.
One of the best railway films ever produced. It has a unique atmosphere. I wonder how long it would take to do that nowadays with all that pointless bureaucracy & H&S .

What I like about this is that the engine which got stuck is now preserved, and is currently being restored. So its sort of a happy ending.

This is the heroic sort of film we need to see in these difficult times.

Luckily they didn't have to deal with the "wrong sort of snow" back then, otherwise they'd never have got it moving again!

We had the snow ploughs based at Healey Mills.
A good job to go out on them.
The plough had a nice warm coal fire inside and this would be white hot at 35mph.
Just take plenty of snap and enough water and milk for a brew.

I remember this winter (1962/3) . We lived on a farm and were cut off for 6 weeks. No school which was great, as I hated school!
