great job man ....!!! ... I like your video ... and don't listen to these people , I'm Persian and I'm telling you , most Persian are stupid racist ...!!!
Why people must have so many arguments with each others....? I'm happy about any kind of Video wich helps me to understand and learn foreighn Instruments... I really love persian Music and want to learn them...and I'm really happy about this video. Try to practise "Salam" with each others... folts are human..and we are humans! Salam to everybody from germany
i bought tonbak in iran i want to learn how to play a song like this, can you make video teaching this? or show me video that can teach me this song at end 4:10 ~ 4:40
Thank you for the postings..Najib is great. Do any of the folks posting the comments have their own websites and demonstrations, etc. for the items they resonded to here....I'd like to view...
brother i think you are a cool guy and nobody has the right to be disrispectful or mean to any body but imagine if somebody took the piano and started playing something totally meaningless ignoring so many years of evelution of this instrument and if it was ristrictly connected to one's nation and culture well they wouldn't probably feel good about it this instrument is way more complicated and advance that one could think in the first look because it looks very simple but it's not
Why are so many people responding here so ready to tear down others and accuse them of ignorance? These are very bad manners. I am African-Am. and live in the US so I know about BAD MANNERS. Let's respect the beauty that comes these cultures---Moroccan, Iranian, Tunisian, African, ----and leave out the judging and tearing down. It doesn't make you bigger or better or smarter to do that. However smart you might be, after the teardown you are shown as spiritually ignorant!
im an iranian tombak player and i play it for some 4 years now. i really respect your love for this instrument when you demonstrate this instrument you dont play it, you just making some sounds. butyour funny keep up the good work !!!!!!
OK! for future video reviewers & if you are Persian, what is the correct way of spelilng this? Don't forget we try spell things out phonetically. Is it "e" or "a?"
Even though Najib spells it "T-O-M-B-E-K" in the vid. We were corrected by Persians that it's spelled with an "A" which is why I reveised it in the title. You are not being a smart ass, you just visited the vid AFTER I had edited the title. I don't have time to explain everything re:the editing & I don't have time to re-record this vid clip, so just go with the flow on this. Thanks!
hi ?i'm iranian and i'm sorry for what some of us do without thinking(a really iranian may not do dat)i thank you and maleika for having attention for iranian music and forgive some of them if are not polite
What's with some Iranians playing JUST the Tonbak? Let's see them play Persian rhythm on darbouka, tambourine, or cahoun. Yalla! Post some Iranians playing other non-Persian instruments PLEASE!!!
I allow discussion, BUT I'm really tired of receiving outright HATRED from some Iranians. 1 guy called us "f**k'in Arabs" - totally uncalled for. Najib is not saying that he's an expert in Iranian rhythms. He's just loves this drum!! Not too many non-Iranians own a tonbak. Man, take a chill pill!
@MaleikaB well im persian and i play the piano and well sorry if some Iranians are rude. but all i'm saying is that Iranians love their intruments and the way they sound and thats why they learn them..
I like him. he seems to be a very cool guy, but with no offense taken , please .
playing in wedding or parties is not all a tombak player can do or take it as a credit for being a good tombak player, but in general he's doing okay. thanks for the video
To those who are criticising him: I agree that neither his explanation nor his demonstration is standardized and classic, but the bottom line in music is to have fun with it and he definitely has it.
Hi there! Thanks for the message. Yes! The bottom line is that we are learning from one another & making music together is better than arguing about little things. It just irritates me that people will say "go look for something else that you are good in".
Yes. that is exactly right. It is because of little things we have learned from eachother that our music is very sophisticated now. I dont think any one has the right to ask you to look for some thing else. If that is ur passion and you are following your heart, that is what you are meant to do. Good luck with your future productions.
Are you Persian? If you are, where di you learn Tombak? Please make sure you have some knowledge about this instrument before you even intend to discuss about. Please go look for something that you are good at it. Good Luck my Moslem brother.
I totally agree, neither your explanation nor your demonstration is right, so I may do a "re" to this video when I find sometime later and make some corrections :)
No my husband is not Persian. PLEASE READ the info before you comment. He has played in California with numerous Persian at weddings & parties. I think his 6/8 rhythm is wonderful & for a nonPersian to play it at this level is great. DO NOT even Tell me to "GO LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE [he} is GOOD at". This video was a thread to describe 3 basic mid-east rhythms: dom-tek-es. Do you even know the history behind the creation of the Tombak?
If I sound defensive, I am. Najib is introducing the drum with explanations re: mid-east rhythm recogntion & is playing 6/8 which is a Persian rhythm. He does not teach Persian, but is sharing his drum with the world. This vid is an extension of his other thread. He does not teach Persian drumming,so he is not truly an expert in Persian rhythms, but if he can play at weddings & parties with the natives dancing up a storm, & they don't know that he's Tunisian, then I think he has done well.
Please read my other comment for you below. But come on Farsirandom! Do you play the Tombak? Please upload your vid's so I can see. For a 29 yer old to say to a 54 yr old man who has played percussion since age 9 to "have some knowledge about the Tombak" is a little rude. He may have greater knowledge in his native doumbek, but highlights this special drum with his techniques. U may be Persian & know the intricate rhythms, but at least Najib wants to share his collection instrument to others.

Good work Najib- it is a good introduction.
I am nitpicking here but it is actually Toumbak and not Toumbek; at least if you are from Tehran you pronounce it like that :)
