  • Sorry Mick I'm full of questions,,,,this canvas in the demo you put the black gesso on first,,,one thin coat or two ?? and what about the drying time ? is it the same as for the white gesso ?

    Thanks again.

  • @jeanmunn black gesso is an acrylic primer and takes as little as 10 mns to dry,i used just one coat

  • Hi Mick,

The liquid clear, you said it was linseed oil and turpentine, what would the ratio be to mix this medium ?

    Thanks.

  • Omg imagine what this guy could do if he had a proper studio to paint in.

  • everyone needs to take time out and book a 1-1 session with Mick if you can he is a great teacher and not only tutors you through a painting but gives you the confidence to want to do more. Thanks again Mick a true professional.....

  • Today i tried my first wet in wet painting but it was a big failure :-( It was a big mud mixer because i applied too much magic white.

  • @forestelder this wasnt painted with liquid white, i used the linseed oil on the dry black gesso.

then i put a small amount of brown and yellow ochre , then i applied just straight white to that

watch my demos carefully and you will get it for sure

  • Hey mic, how is your health these days? I hope you are fine! I want too thank you for the black canvas prep demo. I always wanderd how it worked. White canvas is easy but black was another story for me :-)

How many layers of black Gesso did you used?

    Greetings from the netherlands

  • @forestelder im doing really well mate thanks for asking, keep on practicing and you will suss it out

  • whats the liquid clear?? could i buy it at the art store?? or how do i prepare it??

  • @blueguitar77 you can use linseed oil as long as its purified just dont use two much

  • @Micart33 thank you so much, ill be painting today, thanx again for the info

    ohh btw im 10000% subscribed

  • I finally figured out that I need to use the liquid clear after the gesso to acheive that buleish white color in "evening bliss" Thank you for taking the time to publish your videos for free. My inspiration come from Bob Ross as well and now that I have found you you are really the only one that I like and can understand concepts from. I wish you would be a little more specific when it comes to the colors you use but I still make due. Thank you VERY much and please keep the cool paintings comi

  • tried the same thing it just gummed up everything

  • You must let the gesso dry first, leave for at least an hour or even use a hairdryer to dry it quicker :)

  • @sidewaysjsideways you probibly used two much on the video i said a tiny amount of linseed oil

  • Great demo, black gesso is a favorite of mine and alot of fun to work with.

  • yeh i use it for all kinds of different things

  • Ur dating this dude:

  • Thank you very much...I watched already many of your videos...now will look if I find horses at yours...

  • The results you became after a few minutes is just magical.... thank you Mic

  • thanks so much its a pleasure to paint for you

  • sry.. wrong id.. blushes & happy brushing.

  • Hi there Mic,

Just saw your video and amazing how you do this.

I've never painted myself but I realy want to try... just don't know what kind of materials (e.g. paint, brushes) is best to start with. Can you please give me some advice?

    Thanks alot!

  • Truly beautiflul Mic! There's a dream-like quality to this painting I just love! I've put this video in my favorites! Take care, Holly

  • thnx Holly, its just a demonstration of how to start a painting with black gesso, colour would be added after this :)

but i suppose it does look like a late night scene with the moon behind the clouds :)

  • thanks for all your ace comments, glad you liked the series take care from mick

  • We never got to see Bobs T paper! lol

I thought liquid clear would be clear. Doesn't the light brown taint other colors when mixed on the canvas?

    Thanks:)

    BOP

  • this was a sepear tone painting it needed the browns to the red side, alizarine crimson mixed with sap green to the red side slightly, you can use yellow ochre and a small amount of crimson to highlight the trees take care and happy painting from mick

  • Sorry! I missed the part where you went from the liquid clear to the brown mix!

    Thanks:)

    BOP

  • add the thin layer of liquid clear all over the canvas, then add the mix of crimson and green slightly to the red side, this makes the brown.

  • Hey,great vid i have a quick question.

After you apply the linseed oil you apply some "mixed down" browns, what is the process for this?

  • hi ya i just mixed alizarin crimson with sap green more crimson than green, then you aply the couler with criss cross strokes, remember that you only need to stain the brush with a small amount of the colour. happy painting mate

  • Thanx bro.

Also i notice you aren't using Bob's brand brushes. Have you found a good alternative with a similar bristle to his in your area. I do have his 1 & 2 inch but here in Aussie it's difficult to find a decent substitute brush without going to house-brushes.

  • yes i use other brands but mainly i use bob ross brushes thanks

  • Hi ya. Can you please mention the brand names of these brushes (non Bob-Ross)you use. Are these Varnish brushes or speciality Gesso brushes? Thanks.

  • Can i ask you something my friend?

Do you use Bob Ross's 'stiffer 'paints or do you use standard, thinner varieties?

I've managed to replicate some of Bob's paintings but it's tough going without his firmer brand oils!!

    Please reply if you've time.

  • yeh i use bobross paints for wet on wet techniqes, but you can use normal oils for the yellows. i use normal oils for traditional techniqes. thin paint for highlights like leaves and firmer for underpainting thanks

  • are u an artist, or its just ur hobby?

  • im an artist and sell my paintings when i can :)

  • Thank you, Really informative and one of the better lessons on youtube that I have found. Especially the info on what liquid clear is. Is it in equal quantities, turps and oil?

Very inspirational and encouraging video, thanks once again

  • if you do not have bob ross liquid clear you should use linseed oil on its own. sorry about the conflicting info . i thought you meant liquid white.

  • a very good video, I never thought of using the browns for the sky but I love the effect over the black gesso. Great job, Reg

  • hi ya it was not sky that was in browns it was a woodland background, i,ll show you sometime thanks for the comment
