Kirby's original name was "Popopo", but they renamed him "Kirby" after the company lawyer's last name (who helped Nintendo with the Donkey Kong/King Kong sue thing) who worked with them at that time. Kirby's original name was not forgotten at all (look at the intro "movie" of Kirby Mass Attack and read the name of the mountain Kirby was resting before being splitted in 10)
