  • very thanks for your video.

  • hi niel i m from india i have black honda cb twister bike

i paint my bike in red blue color thanx for ur video my bike looking so good all my friend ask me where i bye this color bike

  • Thanks for the videos and the website.

    -.

  • You can use that kind of filler to start, but it won't leave a smooth surface for painting.. You will need to apply a final layer of plain filler that will leave a smooth surface. Please see the Easy Paint Your Car web site for details. Thanks - Neil

  • My car has some scratches on it, do i sand that with 100 grit? and then apply putty and sand it again with 80 grit? and then the whole car with 400-600 grit for the base coat and then wet sand it before applying the clear coat? i need help am trying to paint my car.

  • EASY am a plasterer, that looks piss easy to do

  • Hi Neil, I just ordered your DVD & can't wait to receive it! I have a 92' Jeep Wrangler that I am getting ready to paint. I'm very glad to have stumbled onto your video & then your website. I was just going to paint my windshield frame & hood, but dadgummitt, now I'm going to go for the whole enchilada. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you & take care, Steve

  • after I have done my bondo and then put on a polyester primer, if I then see something i missed, can I cheat and put on some LIGHTWEIGHT bondo filler over the primer, then sand and prime more over it?

And hey, thanks for answering my earlier question.

  • I wouldn't use cheap (Bondo) filler over anything-- use the same good quality filler you used under the primer. Rage Gold, for example, is essentially made of the same acrylic urethane substances that you paint with- thus, they are very compatible. You can paint right over urethane filler, or put more primer over it.

  • Can you tell me the difference between regular Bondo and rage gold and lightweight body fillers? I have only used regular Bondo. The others cost so much more. Why?

  • I don't know the exact chemical differences-- but as far as use- the expensive fillers sand WAYYYYY better and ultimately provide a better finish, and in the end, far less work for you.

  • hey man hows it goin im sanding and priming my 68 chevy impala and i bring it down with 40 grit then block it wiht 180 then prime block prime again with a thick coat but its still leaving small circles where paint chips used to be when i wet sand that and put on black polyurathane paint will that still show or do i need to sand that spot down and work again thanks for your help!!!!

  • wow 40 grit is pretty coarse. I would think 80 worse case scenario. But the thing is, you DON'T have to remove all the old paint. You gain nothing unless you have serious body damage and rust that needs repair. Anyway, since you used 40, you will need to spend a lot of time--- go 80, then 120, then 220, then apply good primer to fill the remaining scratches. You should hand sand the 220 wet all in one direction last.

  • Also, paint hides NOTHING. Primer is used to fill minor scratches and imperfections, body filler for more serious. THEN you must sand the primer to perfect smoothness. However smooth the primer is- that's how smooth the paint will be in the end. Thanks

  • @neilslade yeah thanks no my dad painted it with rust colored rustoliam so i just took that all down nd got it to original color and took out any surface rust, paint chips, scratches, and 180 then primerd 320d then primed again but there are a few bad areas on the edges of each quarter panel and my main question is would it be easier nd last longer if i weld sheet metal too it or get some duraglass and fill it up the worst is the outside metal is gone and looks like inside of a sofa otheris pinhol

  • The easiest thing is to go to a junkyard and find a panel in good shape, and paint that. Otherwise, I cover repair using body putty (rage gold) in the video and manual, and this is not difficult. For larger holes, you've got to use a screen to hold the putty in place. Welding would work, but I don't do that myself.

  • @neilslade yeah that would make sense, just like drywall. but alright nd not sure if youve heard of this before but im out of money to buy a new radiator or barrs leak so i heard somewhere that you can use black pepper or ginger to plug a radiator leak do you know if this is safe because im thinking if it can plug leaks it can also plug cooling ports ya no?

  • Nope. No quick fix for radiator leaks- got to fix it right- that means either replacement (easiest and surest), or get a radiator shop to actually clean and replace parts. There is NOTHING you can buy that will safely plug leaks without messing with the efficiency of the radiator itself.

  • @neilslade yeah im just stuck on money im gunna get a new one its a slow leak so itll probly take a month before it goes down 3 inches but i did try some barrs leak and it held fora couple days but then it eventually broke and the leak was way worse for some reason so im done using that stuff

  • so what if you wanted to paint a black car a entire new color? do you have to sand it all off or sumthin? i dont really know alot bout these things.

  • No, its not necessary to sand off the old paint. Please visit the web site for details like this. I cover a lot for free there. See MORE INFO, or google Easy Paint Your Car

  • how do youget dirt out of your paint job after its dry?

  • @driftuz sand it with 1500 or 2000 then wipe it with rubbing compound,.

  • I have Neil's full online video set - very good info for the money. Neil is also very responsive via e-mail if you have questions after buying is videos.

  • Im sorry, let my clarify.. I have truck that was just recently painted about 2 years ago.. im ready to change to color and paint it myself this time.. What grit sand paper should I use, and how far down do I sand before I can paint it again??

  • Painting a car requires that you know a lot of little details-- so please please please start at the web site (More Info attached to this video) As to your

particular question- you can go over the whole car with220 by hand then 400 waterproof paper by hand, and then apply new color and clear. Any paint you put will not HIDE anything, but actually accentuate how well you've prepared the surface. Thanks- Neil

  • @DrDickTater hello bro, i just wanna give you some tips, hope its not too late,. here in mitsubishi we first used a 220 down to 600,ready to paint,. if you want a better result, apply epoxy primer first and then sand it with 600 again and then apply the color you want followed by top coat,.,. if you are not satisfied with the result sand it with 2000 and then buff it 3m rubbing compound., just follow it and you'll get the best result,.

  • What grit sandpaper do I use to remove the clearcoat and paint?

  • Well, you are assuming you WANT to remove the original paint- which may be absolutely not what you want to do. Please start at the web site and read through it first.

    Thanks- Neil

  • Are you sanding the paintwork before applying cleaner agent & PUTTY?

  • of course, you MUST. Please see the web page for details.

    thanks

    Neil

  • You can carefully sand the tape marks smooth- like finish sand/polish.

  • @neilslade what grit sandpaper and how long do i wait after painting to sand?

  • You can sand after a few hours-, although I would wait a day or two after the last paint myself. use 1000 or 1200 waterproof paper, regularly rinsed, use with a block.

  • did you forget to clean the putty knife? good video

  • Do you sand a car down to the metal or just loose paint to get ready for primer?

  • Going to bare metal is NOT necessary. At minimum, however, the surface must be sanded smooth. Please see the web page for details.Thanks- Neil

  • thanks for video, i'm gonna fix the hole on my bike with fiber glass and repaint, hope its not too much work...

  • On my site I have lots of pictures of re-painted bikes using this pro- method.

  • hi, i just bought a mustang, and i wanted to put a racing stripe on the car. Can i still do this myself or should i leave it to the professionals?

  • Yes you can put on a stripe- that's not too hard.

  • @ACDC6561 masking tape and automotive paint...

  • Hey, great video. Very informative, thanks

  • i havent got a garage but im going to spray my car outside its a very in expensive car and im going to paint it orange kind of a stock car look so im not too concerned about the finish just wanted to know i can acheive the look from outdoor painting

  • Do it in NO WIND. Any residual dust or insects can be buffed out without much issue. I wouldn't do an expensive car without being in a car port at least :-)

  • i have a questions. The rust had eaten through the metal and there is like a foot long opening under the rear door. and i was wondering if i can just putty the open closed

  • Nope. You have to repair the metal using something to hold the putty in place, like a screen mesh. Any actual holes will not hold anything- just like the holes in the hood above. Also, ALL rust must be removed down to bare metal, then the area sprayed with an etching primer first BEFORE repair. Otherwise, the rust will return.

  • @neilslade if its a foot long thats freakin huge u have to weld metal back in place putty will never last

  • Really depends on what it looks like after the rust is actually removed. It sounds serious, but if it's a sliver, urethane is tough stuff.

  • Two questions: What of water getting in the paint from the air compressor? And if I'm repainting my truck, do I need to sand over the original paint first to roughen it up? Thanks for your help man!

  • Never happened to me- most likely in cool weather- but I use a $7 inline water cartridge filter now, cheap enough insurance. Basic instructions on the web site (MORE INFO) in regards to sanding. Better start there. :-)- Neil

  • Hey Neil, I have a question. Whats the steps to a paint job? I was thinking, sand blast the rust spots, putty, primmer, than paint?? Thanks!!

  • I've built an entire web site for this-- see MORE INFO upper right

  • nice work!!!

  • No rust on these sections- otherwise, rust is removed completely, then the area covered with etching primer, then filler, then paint.

  • WOOT civic nice one =)

  • i dont want to sound like a know it all, because im not, but the more hardner you use, the faster the putty dries.....but it will also decrease the life of the repair, like it cracking. but your on the right track.

  • I don't recommend you use anything but the recommended ratio of hardener to putty.

    Thanks- N.S.

  • @neilslade what are the complete steps and materials needed to paint a car? Would I need to 1) Sand Car 2) repair any body damage 3) sand again if needed 4) add primer 5) add clear based paint 6) then a few layers of paint. is that all you need or is there any other types of paint you will need for the best and longest lasting quality...im willing to spend like $400 or so to spend on this stuff.

  • See the web site- materials are described and costs. Thanks

  • danm..i bought acetone...

  • You should really put the backing on the holes well ahead of doing your filler. I use fiberglass matting with epoxy, then just regular filler after that dries and cures which takes a couple hours or so. You even demonstrated in the video the difficulty you had doing it the way you did. That seems sloppy and is creating a lot of extra work.

Other than that, good video. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Thanks- I am always happy to see suggestions. These were small pinholes less than 1/4" across, so for me, a dab of filler on a small piece of mat did the trick instantly, no slop involved. For large holes, absolutely, fix your mat or screen in place first, I agree.

  • I have a red VW Golf. Some time ago someone put a battery on my hood and acid spilled. The paint was damaged. What steps should I make to fix my car?

    Thanks in advance.

  • No instantaneous fix once the color/clear is wrecked. Just go through the web site, and you'll know what easy steps and cost is involved. Won't take thousands, I assure you. Just a little careful time, and small expense to do a single panel on the car.

  • so when painting over putty, you do a primer, then the actual paint itself (the color) then some type of clear coat right? cause you want the paint to shine right?

  • correct

  • The clear coat does add shine to the car but it was developed in response to problems with paint from the 80's and before. The clearcoats job is to protect the basecoat from uv rays from the sun and also any environment conditions that might occur.

  • But clear and base are both urethane these days- including the new water based color coats. Superior to the old enamels and lacquers. Improved living through Modern Chemistry... :-)

  • dude you are awesome replying to all these comments! straight up beast

  • if you organise the stuff you need on a cart it will save you so much time in fixing scrapes & dents from using the hood as a work bench

  • Absolutely true-- if you have room. My car port is pretty tight so, I just move things as I use them from my shelves and table.

  • i have a civic and on the trunk i have water damage and i guess the clear coat is flaking leaving my paint a matte finish wat do i do? thanks

  • If clear is flaking- probably best to repaint that panel of the car with new color and clear. You don't need to remove the paint, just sand everything good and smooth. All details on my site and in the materials. Thanks- Neil

  • this is cool..Great

  • Glad to help- I answer all my customer emails too!

  • where should I get the paint, primer, and clear?

  • Automotive paint supply- I use my local Sherwin Williams dealer, Allen Paint in Denver-- they will ship.

  • Any way i can get ride of these seedy appearance of metallic flakes? Why does it happen? is there a method to prevent it n get that factory super smooth finish?

  • Metal flake should be level and smooth if you put it on correctly. Sounds like you put it on too lightly, and it did not level out.

  • thanks for the video neil, could any help me in telling me how to put body work on , i am using a body kit.

i am new to this all. =]

    thanks

  • First things first-- READ ALL THE FREE INFO at the web site-- there's lots there-- see the link in the MORE INFO upper right.... as far as putting body parts on-- that's best found in your car's repair manual-- go to an autoparts store to get one if you don't have it... thanks

  • hey bud looks like you are really cool for trying to reply to all these questions, thats rare on youtube, thanks

  • That's my job, happy to help.

  • hey my car has a cracked front guard with some stone chips and i have bought a whole new replacement frivers side guard for it, with the bumper do i just get a fibreglass repair kit and repair it then sand and paint? and with guard, since i need to repaint the whole thing should i just sand back all of the (purple) paint and prep it like normal(sand, fix dints/holes, primer) then paint the colour of my (silver) car back over the completely primer coated guard?

  • See below please-- raw urethane bumpers or plastics should be first painted with an adhesion primer/promoter-- this prevents flaking of paint when flexing of the material occurs. The best body filler is something like RAGE GOLD- available at auto paint suppliers- this company makes a more flexible filler for things like bumpers as well.

  • I think I will buy these videos.

I was wondering, before applying putty, can it be applied to the paint directly? Or does it have to be sanded (but not down to the metal)?

  • Both paint and body filler can be applied to any kind of material- provided it is not glossy, and has been prepared- generally with 220-400 grit sandpaper. If there is any RUST it MUST be removed down to bare metal and first covered with etching primer- or rust will return.

  • PS- Thanks for your support- I answer all emails within hours, and I am happy to help people on their way!- N.S.

  • when you mix paint, primer or clear is it just reducer and hardner or is there other things you have to mix it with

  • Please see the web site- SEE MORE INFO- upper right, for TONS of info--- as to your question--

    1) color or base coat requires reducer (thinner) typically 2:1 ratio

    2) clear requires hardener typically 4:1 ratio

    ---

If you use a SINGLE STAGE formula where color and clear are together, it's three parts, paint to reducer to hardener 8:4:1-- BUT ALWAYS check with the supplier or on the can for the exact ratio for your paint.- thanks-N.S.

  • Hi I have an 89 corolla and I wanted to know if I can paint the plastic bumper and front bumper to match the car....anything special I need to do? Thanks.

  • If you have previously painted parts- like a bumper- no need to do anything special. RAW unpainted plastic does best with an ADHESION promoter/primer so the paint doesn't chip off when flexed. Thanks- please see the site for lots of free info.- N.S.

  • Yes you can paint the plastic bumper of your car, just remember to use plastic paint.

  • Plastic Paint? Umm-- okay, well acrylic urethane is a KIND of plastic-- you use this on the entire car as well. You only need one type of paint for all the parts of your car, that's one of the beauties of urethane. Again, as below, use adhesion primer on the plastic bumpers, then paint as the rest of the car.- N.S.

  • What is plastic paint. Never heard of such a thing? I use an adhesion promoter on bare plastic and then use flex in my paint.

  • All modern auto paints are actually catalyzed "urethane" - in essence, plastic- a synthetic polymer. You are 100% correct, you need adhsion promoter on bare raw plastic, such as an unprimed bumper, or similar. Thanks

  • "Flex" agent is unnecessary- urethane is plenty flexible. I don't know anyone who uses it. Some dealers will sell anything. Not the pros I deal with...

  • That is about the best body filler you can get I like it.

  • Holy Crap, That lookes my car!! It has to be an 84-87 Civic isn't!? I can definatly use this video.

  • hi neil. thank you very much a very clear instruction. i'll be painting my jeep myself next next week. thank you very much for this video.

  • Hi, Thanks for taking the time to make this video and post it here on youtube. Your work is much appreciated! I managed to repair my bonnet (hood) today with aid of your video.

    Thanks! from England :)

  • neil you are the man... i learned alot. thanks!!!!

  • i have never seen anyone explain in such a clear way

  • great video man? man i was also wondering is there a site or maybe you could show me how to bond a fiberglass hood scoop to a metal hood? id appreciate the help

  • Of course! See the link in the video! Also see MORE INFO upper right of this page.- Neil

  • dude great video helps a whole lot.

  • I just imagine my car looks good.

  • Hey- that works! :-)

  • my car is 1 solid color... rust :)

  • hahah :-)

  • nice intro video, but i would use plastic spreaders rather than mixing sticks and the mixing blade. helps with pin holes and is easer to shape the filler.

  • Yes, this is a good idea, thanks-- I've used both.

  • whats a good paint gun company not too expensive but still decent ??????any help would be appreciated

  • Husky is about $75, or contact Allen Paint in Denver- they have excellent guns you can trust that are relatively inexpensive and first class.

Please see MORE INFO upper right for web site and details

  • thanks ill check it out

  • generally true, but good putty is urethane-- exactly the same as paint-- and if the paint is really stuck to the surface, such as a small indentation, adding putty will stick as well.

  • Yes, exactly what I state in my manual and web site. Please see MORE INFO upper right. Thanks-Neil

  • nice vdo it helped

  • Just an update- a year later- all the repairs holding perfectly. See the web site for more details and updates-- MORE INFO box upper right on this page.

  • hello im painting my car , im sanding off all the paint to the metal i was using acetone to wipe down the area before painting but im now using paint thinner to clean the metal before priming is this ok ??????????? i was tol acetone was fine but im unsure about the paint thinner please respond asap im painting in 2 days. thank you

  • Acetone is expensive, and further will damage any existing paint it touches, so avoid. I use denatured alcohol. Please see MORE INFO upper right for detailed info. Thanks

    -Neil

  • Would you be able to do this same process when repairing Motorcycle fairings?? Thanks and good video 5 stars

  • Yes, please see the web site-- I've got a motorcycle repaint illustrated.

  • Please see MORE INFO box, upper right on this page- the web site has LOADS of good information- thanks - Neil

  • after you putty, what grade of sand paper do u use to sand that? and after u prime, what grade of and paper do u use to sand that?

  • 1) 220, then 400

    2) same- you can go 600 after primer

  • All rust must be removed down to bare metal- sorry- then reprimed with ETCHING PRIMER (automotive paint supply)-- otherwise, rust will come through.- thanks- Neil

  • me and my father in law patched up an old car and he used steelo scrubbing pads like steel wool or brass wool to do the same kind of thing as the screen you used except he used it on a corner :)

  • WTF... I think Neil needs a really good marketing manager to get his brain stuff off the ground. .... LOL.....

  • shouldnt your putty be smooth, i have a k-car that im restoring and i use a differnt techique.

  • smoother the better is good-- but it must be sanded anyway- so, perfectly smooth doesn't matter upon application- thanks

  • I am a real handy carpenter and do all my own mechanic work on my vehicle and have been debating on painting my truck myself. if you can answer my one question to my satifaction i will buy your book. If my clear coat is peeling in places you i have to remove all of it to putty and paint or do i putty and paint over existing clear coat?

  • you can re-apply clear, but any uneven appearance of the existing clear will show through- so better to fine sand by hand with 400 to eliminate all uneveness on the surface. Then apply new clear coat on the entire panel.- thanks- Neil (This will give you the best result without repainting the entire panel from color layer)

  • hi I was just curious why you do not recommend using Bondo.

Have you had a bad experience with it?

Is the Rage body putty that you use significantly better than Bondo?

    THANKS!

  • Thank you sir for the video.. I never painted a car befor so I have to try it now ..

I olso have a qestion ..with those holes at the end instead to use fiberglass or a metal grill ..Can I use like painting tape to put it under the hood.. and when it's going to dry out take it off..?

    Thank you once again.

  • tape will work for very small holes. Putty dries in 20 minutes often sooner, then remove.- Thanks

    Neil

  • what about surface rust? my car has some areas of concern, i sanded a samll portion down and it ust came right off but my hood is more corse and i dont want it to come down to the metal what should i use? keep the hood? Thanks!

  • My '01 harley fell over and dented the tank. Do you recommend Rage putty for that application?

  • Yes, see the web site-- we do exactly that on a Honda bike

  • Dude where did u go to school?? ur damn good!!

  • Your videos are great, keep them coming

    -subscribes-

  • Tell me how to fix window pillar rust on my s10?

  • See the new "rust" page under QUICK TIPS on the page EasyPaintYourCar web site- link in the About This Video box, upper right.

  • hi, i have a dent on my toyota paseo 93, and a couple of scratches, should do what u did in this video, or pull out that dent first, anyway , i just bought ur dvd, thanks

  • Pull out dents as close to original level first, then fill in, no more than 1/4 inch fill at a time.

  • Leave it to the pros man. and its not putty, its bondo.

  • Well, the "pros" would like that, wouldn't they. Fact is, I don't use nor recommend Bondo, but urethane body filler like Rage Gold- and this is what we use on Lotuses, Ferraris, Lambos, and all other cars. Putty is a generic term, perfectly acceptable.

  • great reply! :)

  • hey thanks a lot dude your awesome!

in gonna paint my van lime green :)

but where can i buy the car paint, cleear coat, and putty?

  • I use Sherwin Williams automotive.

  • putty or bondo , should only be placed on metal , it will not stick properly to the paint .

  • generally true, but good putty is urethane-- exactly the same as paint-- and if the paint is really stuck to the surface, such as a small indentation, adding putty will stick as well.

  • You can google an automotive paint pro review of this: "Jim Lyons Slade talking paint"--

also see MORE INFO upper right- thanks

  • I have a huge hole on the side of my car, from rusting. what should i use. another thing. Is putty and body filler the same thing?

  • really interchangable names-- for HUGE holes, replace the panel because putty/filler without wire reinforcement will not be particularly stable or strong.

  • Wait i do't understand...where are the other videos that continue this one???

  • Please see MORE INFO upper right corner and visit the main site.Thanks- Neil

  • Thanks for the informative video. I would add that you should definitely steer people away from doing the mix too hot. I did not hear you mention this. The problem with an overly hot mix is that it will be much less stable and will have a greater tendency to crack.

  • I believe its on the main site-- definitely in the DVD and manual. Also, in hot weather 90+, it sets up unbelievably fast, so you adjust the mixture in such situations. Thanks- Neil

  • Great Video Neal, A quik ? how you can avoid dry spray lines when you spraying a car, I try to paint a horse trailer a looks grat but when you look closed you see a Gloos line and on top and the botton you see dry mate paint,... WY?

  • If you spray properly, and overlap about 50% on each pass, you wont' get any lines. More on the site and manual and DVD-- but essentially- follow the simple directions, and nothing bad happens. Thanks

    Neil

  • VERY VERY INFORMATIVE!

You're a very good teacher. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • i liked the vid, very understandable, but the topic is misleading, your doing bondo, and not painting. it should have said how to bondo a car your self. but its good i liked it. good job.

  • uh--- the title is "PUTTY", something you do before you paint. :-) And there is also a HUGE difference between high quality body putty and "Bondo" which is a very inferior patching product.

    Thanks

  • On the rust hole area, I wouldve ground the paint off, beat the area down with a hammer, used duraglass (its made by evercoat, the same place the rage came from) and maybe put a little rage filler over that then primer and paint. You wouldnt need screen with the duraglass.

  • Yes, your suggestion would work too... but in this particular case, hammering wasn't necessary, and since I used a little bit of mat, only one filler was needed, and this saves money on additional materials. A gallon of filler is $30, a bit of screen cloth is pennies.

  • THANK YOU VATO!

  • very cool, thanks -- my car has dents-- but not for long....
