I used to play provincial soccer and I was a keeper myself. I found myself stopping 70% of my penalties by guessing the side the player is shooting by their stance before the shot and putting myself in their position to see what side will be most comfortable to shoot at.
it's all lies guys, almost 90% of the time the goalkeeper have a pre-made decision on where to dive before the shot was taken, hence thats the reason why 90% of all penalties which result in a goal have the keeper diving the wrong way

But for professionals, where strikers are shooting shots that are incredibly fast and accurate, it's almost impossible to react in time. That's why sometimes you see penalties where the keeper just "looks on" as the ball went in because they are trying to react to where the ball goes, only to find out that their body doesn't react in time and just froze.
ive played soccer as a keeper for 12 years, and it is just guessing... you watch the persons hips and foot to get a idea where their kicking it but mostly you just dive to one side or the other without knowing.
Im a keeper too and it's not just diving one way because you decide thats where you want to go, you have to pay attention to many different factors before they shoot. So it's more of an estimate than a guess.

Really, just think about it, take a regular athlete who doesn't play soccer or baseball. Than let him swing at a professional pitcher 1,000 times. Then let him goalkeep against pro kicker 1,000 times. What will he will stop more?

And in those case the keeper know where the ball is going. But that could take years and years of experience and like in everything there are others that are just naturals

@420passleft and a MLS player can kick a PK ( on adv. ) 70 MPH...not 60..and if u r talker awesome players like C. Ronaldo,Ronaldinho,or even Landon Donovan ( i know. hes american too. ) it can be over 100 MPH

for the pros in each respective sports its harder to save a pk. but for the average person its easier to save a pro soccer players pk than hit a major league pitcher. being a goalie in college and my coach who played in the MLS he has taken about 20 pks on me. I havent saved one of his yet.
