Wow! Never knew Pet Clark was bi-lingual!!! Great song! Like mthivier, I never knew this song had lyrics at all, just enjoyed the Lawrence Welk version when it came out.(was in the audience when he first played it live) Nothing quite like live music even tho you can 'massage' it in the studio.
@ShastaPacificRoad Petula has a vast French repertoire and is still considered to be a massive star in France. She has a new French language album out in March. She also recorded around 30 songs in Italian and the around the same number in German, and had many hits with them. She did record 4 songs in Spanish, just before Downtown, but never took that further, probably de to American commitments.
@davie1238 I actually had no idea she was that versitile! Most singers do or have dubbed, versions of their songs in other languages. I guess I just presumed that might have been the case here. One of her songs was playing the night I firsr met my late wife and then later proposed to her. I'll always remember that. Amazing how music, certain songs, associated with certain events stay in your mind......... forever.
@ShastaPacificRoad That's a nice story. You have a good reason to enjoy Petula. She is 79 now, but still in great voice; not as strong as it once was, but still awesome. I went over to Paris for a concert there in November. She brought the place down. They were screaming for more. There are some of her songs from that concert on here. She's got 3 weeks in New York, sold out, starting next week, and then a sold out tour of Australia with extra dates put in by demand, to follow.
Wow, I know Lawrence Welk had had a big hit with an instrumental version this song in 1961 (I think his only visit to the top of the pop charts), but I didn't know it actually had lyrics (in French or any other language). Petula does a great job.
Love this song. There's a live version floating around somewhere, recorded in Canada in the 1970's with an updated backing and it's absolutely brilliant.
@davie12 If you have more info on the great '70's Canadian version of the song "CALCUTTA" that you spoke of, I would be interested in knowing it. :-)
@garywrightny I have no more information other than she was doing a season of concerts in Montreal in about 1977, I think. She did quite a few of her 60s French hits with new arrangements by Harold Wheeler. L'Enfant Do; Je me sens bien and Calcutta were three that I know were included. At one time the Petula Clark Society sold dvds of some of that concert, but that was about 7 or 8 years ago. I don't know that there would be any left.
Beautiful. So glad I've discovered Scopitones!

@ShastaPacificRoad I knew of Petula Clark long before she sang her signature hit 'Downtown'.

In my opinion Petula was a little more attractive than Dusty Springfield. Dusty was more glamorous, while Petula had more of a natural look.
