sorry don`t agree at all. Where do you get it from, that Netrebko/Garanca were without warmth, heart, soul and dramatic expression? Seems to me you got stuck to the old generaiton, Callas sometimes sung horrible, scratchy, even false, so did Montserrat, not to talk about Suitherland. ) Listen to Panis Angels/Garanca or Pier Jesu /Netrebko. and then talk about it and let me know. Thank you.
The Barcarolle duet from Tales of Hoffman, to me, can be more than beautiful singing by two females. The music is nocturnal, romantic but with a touch of melancholy. I like this version because Caballe and Verrett sing it with a touch of that sadness or "a sigh". This effect is achieved when the conducting for this scene is slowed down at a longer pace. The barcarolle theme appears as the central motif through the entire Venice Act. Offenbach must have been very proud of this his own work
Excellent, with the necessary warmth of tonality, surpassed only by Netrebko/Garanca and/or Schwarzkopf/Collard. I´d put Caballé / Verrett on range No.3 among the best interpretes ever, 2. Scharzkopf/Collard. 1. the version that comes closest to the romanticism of Offenbach and especially to this duet: Garanca/Netrebko, in just perfekt harmony, melting together with each other and the orchestra, just "celeste".
I have always put 20th century opera singers on pedestals.. Singers like Caballe, Callas, Verrett, Tebaldi, Sills, Sutherland, Price, Moffo, Bumbry, etc, are remarkable singers that cannot be surpassed. Just listen to this! It's the best...they used to put FEELING behind their voices, today's singers - Netrebko and etc, are vocal athletes with great technique but no real heart or soul or interest in art-drama expression.
@MastersoftheOpera Assolutamente d'accordo, soprani come la Netrebko sono atleti vocali non interpreti squisite come quelle che ha nominato. Meno male che non tutti sono orecchianti e non pretendono che le cantanti sembrino delle soubrettes...
The best recording of this duet I've ever heard. Without questions. One of the best soprano/mezzo pairings on record, rivaled only by Sutherland/Horne.
If there is ever an opera that I have wanted to see live, it would have to be "The Tales of Hoffman". This reminds me of sitting as some small cafe in Venice and watching a gondola going by with two people singing this song. Truly very beautiful.
What can one say Two STAR singers....... Please Take notes you singers want to be......... This is how it is done...... study study study study until you get it. ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!!!!!
