Yup for sure. I had a 4door starlet before as my restoration project but I was having a hard time looking for the original parts esp. the chrome bumpers that's why I've sold it. Now I'm bringing back our Toyota XL to it's original stock look and parts. Much easier. Will try to post some pix. ;p
@DjARTisROCK That would be great! That's one thing that gets to many doing restoration..finding out how difficult parts can be to find. I think that's why the cars of the 20's are relegated to a few very expensive cars like Pierce Arrow, or the more familiar and plentiful Fords and Chevys. Thanks! :) Jack
Well they are certainly rare with a big shiny engine! I nearly bought one of the second generation Starlets new in 1997, after having one as a courtesy car while my Corolla was being serviced and being impressed with the performance. The one I test drove some time later though, when a different dealer was pre-registering them and doing specials with alloys and metallic paint, didn't seem as pokey as the one I'd had before and it didn't say 'buy me'. Later I bought a used Fiat Punto instead!
@rx6180 Hey, Mick! I think they were extremely rare in the U.S....I can't say I remember seeing any during their heyday. We have still to see the new Fiat offerings from the "new" Chrysler Corporation...they have come up with a "new" Jeep suv which looks quite like the preceding generation. I am curious as to how cheaply they will sell their Fiat offerings. Thanks! :) Jack
@cheddyrod Hey, Chester...this is the only one I have seen around here..and the owner and his brother certainly did an exceptional job on this one! Thanks! :) Jack
Thank you very much for showing us this wonderful restored Starlet, Jack. I like it and it reminds me at my younger years. Where I live at this time (late 70ies, early 80ies) there were many starlets around. But none with a center console nor this wonderful upholstery. Most of the cars were crushed due to the rust and the successor /w front wheel drive.
@MowagW200 Hey, Dieter! Glad I could bring back the memories! I had the feeling that the end state of this one was much better than even original condition...real devotion to the car! It's a pity about the rust....so many cars here of that vintage fell victim too! Thanks! :) Jack
@therealjimguy Hey, Jim! This one stood out in the crowd! Never saw anything like it before! I am sure the restoration was a labor of love. Thanks! :) Jack
@Sarcasticscum Hey, Nathan! Yeah..this was a unique opportunity! Every once in awhile I get to see something I've never seen before, and this was it! Thanks! :) Jack
Now THAT is impressive!!! And that seemed to be a cool little car actually! Now he just needs to restore a 1958 Impala with that same attention to detail and quality......:D
@mongo5888 Hey, Greg! It sure would be sporty to drive this one around! Hmmm sounds like you would be interested in buying that 58 Impala if this guy restored it..and I don't blame you. He does first class work! Thanks! :) Jack
@1DRock37167 Hey, Daryl! I can't say that I remember the car...but it is certainly worth preserving! This I believe was a two year restoration project! Thanks! : ) Jack
Wow ... My first car was one of these, Jack, back in '98 :)
Mine was an '83 KP60 the same as this but with a 1.0L engine, it was old, slow & very rusty ... But I absolutely loved it & we went through a lot together :)
They were fantastic little cars, they are really ultra rare now, because they were renowned for rusting!
I can tell you, this car is almost 100% modified, though nicely done ! The US versions were slightly different looking to the European & Japanese models for some reason :|
@drewerz01 Hey, Mike! Glad you had personal experience with one of these cars! Rust has always been a big problem here, particularly in the Northeast U.S. where salt and cinders are used extensively in the Winter. I figured the owner would modify things as he went along, because everything looked so perfect. The addition of the tuner in the console was a good example! Thanks! : Jack
@TURBOswiftgti Yeah...there's something about this little car that is endearing! Everything goes so well together..the paint, the interior..everything! Thanks! :)
Wow; that IS an impeccable example! There were quite a few of these in the Seattle area; I knew two Boeing engineers who had these, well into the late-1990s, w/ umpteen-thousands of miles on 'em. One engineer referred to his as "Toyota's answer to the Saturn V", referring to leisurely acceleration (this same engineer also had a VW Bus!) Interesting that these were offered in the States in parallel to the FWD, similar-sized Tercel.
@sortashaman Thanks...It is really one of the nicest restored cars I can say I've seen! Amazing how the engineers pick a favorite car, probably on the basis of its technical excellence..and then it fulfills that promise! My guess is that Toyota wanted to have both front and rear drive cars ready depending on how well the American public took to FWD. :) Jack
nice restoration
