The great concerts on the south bank are all on record and are just the best Alex Welsh recordings, and the one made in Dresden titled "The great concerts" is a must for any "Welsh" fan....Jazzer44.
Took my wife on our first date in January 1963 to see Alex Welsh play at Wood Green Jazz Club. She must have enjoyed it too, she went out again and again with me.
Anyone remember the Midland Jazz Club-Deritend, Brum. Resident band - Second City Jazzband.Went to school with Ken Freeman -Trumpet.Colyer was the best, Barber next, Alex Was best of the rest--So our mob reckoned. Kenny Ball came, who we all hated-- loved him after that- just goes to show- Then I found Cannonball Adderley- bye bye trad`l...
My father was the original trombonist with the Second City Jazzmen - Barry Phillips (sadly recently deceased); obviously never saw them, but have their one and only album (on Esquire, 1958) and was lucky enough to hear the great Jimmy Hyde on sop sax when I was growing up as well as their pianist, Pete Vicarey.
It more in the tempo pattern of the famous Eddie Condon recording from the late fifties which ,including the back-up riffs, looks for certain where Alex and his musicians got their inspiration from.
No way should Beale Street be played at this speed ... just a personal opinion ... but there's this blind man on the corner singing the blues, and at this rate you're going to run over him!

Sadly Alex passed on at our local hospital.

Too quick by far, compare with Barber and Ottilie.

In fact, we (Steamboat Stompers from Munich) play this tune in about half that speed - just like we would sing "if Beale Street could talk".
Nevertheless, Alex Welsh's is a very fine band, just look at (or hear to) "Toot toot tootsey goodby". There indeed they dont miss the singing tempo.
