also the asteroids are a walk in the park in the snes version. There really is only one asteroid you have to deal with, and it spawns in your path at regular intervals. So as soon as you see it move your ship so it's off screen, and it's gone.
Umm space battle in this game isn't as complicated as you make it out to be... You hit afterburners to go after ships. In fact if you arn't hitting afterburners constantly, you are a sitting duck and likely to get killed in later missions. I personally tap it repeatedly so as to conserve fuel.
For some reason the SNES limited only limited you to one ship/debris @ close range, that explains the *realtime* BS. Best thing to do is just have your wingman not attack or send them home, and just take out everything solo.
buster, their is a way to bypass the asteroids in nav 2. first when you are about to go to nav 2, go back to nav 1. next, go to nav 3 and once all the salthi are history go directly back to the tiger's claw
i actually like wing commander snes better than the pc because the music is great and the characters look way better like spirit, she looks beautiful unlike the pc version she looked like a friggin zombie and the grahpics are just the same almost but hey we all have our opinions so i am not going against your opinions :]
I'm somewhat disappointed in you, Buster...having to use your wingmen in the first few missions? I always sent them right back home.
Also, the best way to go through the asteroids in the SNES version is just to go quickly and slalom back and forth, because there's only one asteroid that'll damage you at a time...and it's the one that will always be coming straight at you. The others are just background.
This is different in the PC version, but for the SNES, it's MUCH easier.
I'm currently watching the LP WC 4 series... But I'm watching this kind of for nostalgia. I actually own this game, but for some reason I like to watch it being played. XD
Also, I always die in the asteroids. I think... "Meh, I don't really need to slow down if I react quickly." And I keep the throttle at 420. Then I always run into an asteroid and blow up, haha.
It's probably because I always turned on invincibility for the longest time and got used to just afterburnering though asteroids.
I can't do the SNES version. The limit of ships that would actually come into contact with you at once was what... two? I remember it had a strange limitation along those lines. Other ones would be waiting in the sidelines.
I did download it, and have played it before doing this LP series. Although the controls are better, and the cutscenes have a much better frame rate, I think the Super Nintendo version just sits better for doing a Let's Play series.
I think the PC version has much better music, however it depends on your sound card and configuration...
Also I think the way how the battles work in the SNES version, like you explain it in the video - is unbearable... That's not Wing Commander, it's... I'd better be quiet ;)
after all, again great of you to make this series, I think Wing Commander, especially the first game, is much too under-present on the web ;)
@BCSBuster im an original player of this game and the computer version on a 386/25 was amazing frame rate. this guy not only talks too much he pretends that he knows this. on a 386 or 286 this game flew... and we all used keyboard to win it.

Blair was 24 years old during the events of Wing Commander 1 which is why he looks so young, lol

The PC version of the game was much better. You can download it for free on various sites and play it in DOSBox.

Just my own thoughts and experiences.
