  • I cant staand to watch kxly anymore they have the worst broadcasters especially dave erickson is a complete asshole and shold have is ass whipe by his mother fucking kiss asshole fuck you kxly

  • BTW, Leslie Lowe is now the weekend 10 and 11 PM anchor at KHQ/KAYU in Spokane since Julia Sandstrom (Formely of KING, KREM, KTVU) takes over 5 and 6 PM weekend weathercasts.

  • KXLY currently broadcasts in letterbox format so when this video was put on it was just put in 4:3 format but they don't broadcast it this way so it actually looks pretty good if you watch it on tv.

  • sorry -- this isn't that great

    bad music

horrible branding "KXLY 4 HD News"...what a mouthful!

Bill Ratner isn't that great of a voiceover

  • Adding onto my last comment (I ran out of room) - I think the "cool" bouncy graphics are meant to make KXLY look cool so viewers want to watch. It's basically a sugar coating to attract viewers...to their not so great news agenda and news story telling. Notice how quickly they transition from the bouncy/spinning graphics to KXLY's standard blue/red (boring) slant theme...

  • These graphics are not well thought out. Yes, KXLYs graphics package carries the blue/red slant theme throughout. But the ONLY place in the entire newscast where they have spinning, bouncing, swirly, sliding objects, and sparkles (which btw look really cheesy and ruin what would otherwise be a decent graphics package), is in the opening scenes. These scenes do not relate to the rest of the newscast, and this lack of cohesiveness shows why KXLY is and will always be Spokane's "wannabe" station.

  • Basically he had a legal incident and "retired" very suddenly...leaving the main anchor spot to be filled by Dave Erickson.

  • I agree with jokerhawk21681 - this is one of the better medium market talent opens I've seen. It's well-done and creative without being too "blingy". In fact, from what I've seen, all the news graphics packages from Spokane look pretty good.

As for the graphics bleeding off the side, I have a feeling this is more a product of how it was recorded rather than anything KXLY did. I'd LOVE to see this clip captured in HD.

  • Yea, I agree, the talent open is kind of cool.

As far as the graphics bleeding, that is KXLY's problem. They didnt design their graphics with the ability to be viewed in the zoomed/cropped 4:3 aspect ratio on an analog TV. There were a lot of viewers complaining about this when KXLY first switched to HD news.

Competitor KHQ got it right. Even though their production is produced in and intended to be viewed in a letterbox format, they still don't get cut off when viewing a zoomed 4:3 ratio.

  • I sit corrected. Thanks for the clarification. :)

It would drive me nuts having to shoot video or produce graphics nowadays. You have to not only worry about the SD "bleed-off zone" but the viewable zone for HD screens.

  • Gotta realize that Spokane is market 75ish. the graphics and music are good for a market its size. There aren't a whole heck of a lot of "better Spokane" pictures to put in the background.

  • Hmm, I don't like the open and the music is music to sleep by. The talent open is pretty cool, but they need better pics in the background to show off the tech parts. Overall, a 3 out of 10

  • I don't like their graphics that much. The lower thirds don't follow safe areas and the overall appearance of the graphics are tacky at best. Otherwise, the music is good and the open is decent.
