Wow, scarlett shows that he was just too old when this game was played to keep up with him ... no wonder he ran away from buddy for three years after this game. Before you geelong fans get upset, Scarlett is a great player, no doubts there, but we all have our nemesis ....
@Whoknowsuknow spot on, franklin always has a good day against the cats no matter who he is playing on. Scarlett is a great defender but he hasnt had to deal with a freak like buddy in his whole career. Lets not also forget that there is hardly any good FF's around anymore and havent been many in the scarlett era, had buddy kicked straight this night he would have kicked at the very least 6, in this day and age thats a touch up.
How can Matthew Scarlett be a 'Legend' or one of the greatest defenders of all time when he plays lose man in defence? He never has a direct opponent, its embarrassing listening to these commentators talking him up all the time. What an absolute Joke!
@Nytowl7 He earned his reputation as a legend from the days when he was the only decent defender we had and week in, week out he would take the oppositions best forward and not give them a sniff. In recent times the succession plan has been to give players such as Matthew Egan (before injury), Harry Taylor and Tom Lonergan the oppositions key forwards so as that when Scarlett does eventually retire, we have experienced players to rather than be left with no one. Make no mistake, he is a LEGEND
@Nytowl7 He and SOS are hands down the 2 best fullbacks I have ever seen play the game and I can not seperate either of them. It's generally accepted that they are the 2 greatest full backs of all time so surely being the best player to play a position in 150 years is good enough credentials to be called a legend?
@mozzaman92 Say's yourself. Can't be full back when your lose man in defence mate. He's been copying Mark Harvey's playing style for years. Floating defender, SOS played on all the greats and kicked bags of goals when switched forward. There is no comparison between Silvagni and Scarlett. Silvagni shits all over him.
@Nytowl7 Yeah but like I said he's only been the floating defender in recent years while we develop our younger players. He had 10 years of playing fullback on the oppositions best players before that and shut them down every time. Your view is being skewed by what you've seen the last 3-4 years, and even then, he's still one of the best players in the comp
Buddy is not one of those player that refuses to do the arc.. other players like jack riewoldt is good for marking and kicking on set shots.. buddy is one that kicks those nice high exciting kicks and takes more shots on goal then any other player in the afl.. Despite his accuracy he is a LEGEND!! he finished this year with 71 goals 54 behind!! Go the Hawks
@southaustralian where was scarlett when he kicked those 2 goals btw? way out behind him trailing him in, he was lucky we didnt hit buddy lace out that often otherwise that would have been the result every time. Not only that he kicked them both at crucial times of the game. Scarlett was too shit scared to run off and create like he did for the whole year such was the respect he held for buddy therefore buddy without doing much stopped a crucial part of their gameplan out of defence.
@southaustralian Maybe YOU only looked at the stats sheet and saw "Franklin: 2 goals" and didn't know about the goals he set up. Even with posession stats aside, Franklin had a hand in at least 4 goals, pretty crucial contribution in a game that was won by 26points, so he did enough, and his opponent didn't stop him from doing enough, nor did he set up as much play himself from defence as normally would have. Anyway there is one crucial stat that matters above all else, Hawks 115 Geelong 89.
would have been a complete ownage in this game had he kicked straight, ended up with 4.5 with at least 2 easy misses. Dont think that would have happened to scarlett that often.
Yes many said Franklin would need to kick 12 goals for Hawks to have a chance. Not so. Have you ever noticed Scarletts stats in the GF? He had a grand total of 11 touches, WAY below his normal attacking from defence standard, Franklin kicked 2 and set up 2 more, I'd hardly call that a 'lesson'.
should be renamed to "Legand whips scarlett"

this is why he never plays on Franklin anymore

@Whoknowsuknow Why would he need to when Taylor/Lonergan regularly beat him?
babyduck1 2 months ago
@babyduck1 Yeah Taylor/Lonergan kept him to 4 goals in 3 quarters last time they played. That's a beating?
Scarlett avoids playing on a fully fit Franklin since this night where he was whipped.

@babyduck1 Scarlett is better then who? Scarlett isn't full back, he's lose man in defense, you don't get credit for that bullshit.

@southaustralianI agree, you'd look at his opponents stats too (as I did, read my comment again, it's ok I know South Aussies are a bit slow).

Scarlett is over rated Kosi took 5 marks on him in a quarter, lucky kosi is random or it really would of undid the myth that is matthew scarlett.

@raff23 Very rarely. But Franklin has a tendency to do it to anyone he plays on.

buddy one out against scarlett would wipe the floor with him, dont care how good scarlett is.

Buddy's so shitt, takes him 3 shots to kick 1 goal.
he cant kick for shit.
these were the best 3 minuetes of his career.
it will never happen again.

Are you serious? I don't even follow the Cats I find this rediculous.
Mate, next you should compile a video about Buddy's efforts on Scarlett in the Grand Final. When it mattered.
Mind you, you probably couldn't due a lack of material. Unless ofcourse you are happy wasting your time compiling a 10sec video (if that).
You remember, that was the day, on the big stage that despite all the hype, the "champion" gave the "boy" a bit of a lesson.
Tool.
