If WoW was just a cheap ripoff of EQ, then that game would have died shortly after release. Obviously WoW did something right that EQt didn't in the MMO genre, and that is why WoW killed EQ. There's a difference between "copying" and "refining" a game.
Everquest was at one point the pride in my life, and it was top dog over any other game out there, up to about velious, after velious it took a downward spiral, and after about the second plane of power expansion it was a ghost town, even server merging couldnt keep a playerbase. but that game kept some of the greatest gaming memories ever, and though the game still exists, it will never be as it once was.
Everquest was epic. There was nothing like that 3D world back in the time when Ultima Online wasn't even close. Everquest will always be one of the greatest game in my life. I mean without Everquest, there won't be so much MMORPG like it today.
However, on the other hand, WoW one of my favourite too cuz Blizzard made it right.

No, I am not joking. This video has an excellent crisp and stylized look. Trading grainy, gridy, hyper-detailed-textures-that-no-one-cares-about for a more versatile interaction with a definitely 'look' would be a huge win. There are plenty of "real" looking MMOs out there, EQ should embrace its roots instead of blending into the herd. Just my opinion.
You cannot hate on EQ , It was fundamental , Inspired By D&D , which was created by Gary Gygax ,In turn Inspired by Tolkeins the Hobbit , LOTR saga , This was before Computers existed . This is where all games with AC Hit points , Mana , This is where they got that stuff , besides, EQ pvp was absolutely Brutal by Wow standards , you could loot the opposing player, One piece , of course it was the best one . Pvp would make your heart race because there was a lot to be lost . EQ was the first.

I could leave for a year, come back and every person/guild would still be there. Played WoW for 5 years, of the thousands of people I've meet none still play their original character if at all, guilds dry up and die away within months of forming.

@blitzvomitew16 EQ2 was awful at launch, it's finally rebalanced and headed in the right direction. EQ1 catered too much to the elitists that dominated it, EQ2 offers a more casual alternative. Thankfully, EQ2 also maintains the depth at the high end without going over the top.

Man. I am 15, and have played this game almost since the beginning (literally, like 3-4 years old) This game used to make people grow bonds to each other and connect socially. Now most MMOs you can solo all the way to the max level then make fun of everyone for not having the same armor. EQ1 all the way! People need to get back to the classics.

the department that song created to make this game....was fiired by sony after the gamer became popular \(around kunark expansion or velious\0...they then handed over to another department that had no heart and love for the game...they started pimpin out expansion after expansion for money and killed it.
Timelocked progression servers have been a huge hit, there are 2 servers due to the popularity, and both servers are still very populated 2 weeks in after the free account reactivation. Definitely shows people are interested and having fun.

This is coming back! EQ1 is going back to its original game without any expansions. It is called the Fippy Darkpaw time progression server and opens february 15th. Every 90 days or so the server will vote whether or not they want to add an expansion.
@roewedge the progression server will not be real classic, just like the other progression servers weren't. There will be non-classic overpowered items, revamped zones most likely and lots of other stuff. On p99 everything is real classic, check it out you will see.
@Nedala88 Actually they have claimed that they went through and made sure that there were no overpowered non-classic items in the game. I know some things will be different but at least it will have a stable server/good population for a while. I am just looking to enjoy the time and take a look back for a while :).
@roewedge well the p99 is stable and the population is decent (almost 1k peak hours which can make it hard to find camps) since over a year, and the staff doing a better job than live staff ever did, imo. Btw kunark release is at march 25.
But check out the progression server but when you get bored of it think of p99 and check it out, and while you there and see people raging about how unclassic the progression server is, send them to us :)
@Nedala88 You obviously don't know what you're talking about. With the exception of certain things that CANNOT be changed on a single server w/o gamewide changes (ex: graphics, zone setups, commands, etc), it is EXACTLY classic. If it wasn't available when the game 1st launched, it will not be available on the new server until that expansion is unlocked, which thanks to the Time Locks, will take 2+ years :)

@aggrofy You can play with just the basic game, you just don't have access to the content of later expansions without having purchased. That being said, if you buy just the newest expansion (House of Thule) it includes the basic game + every expansion made.

Man this intro tells as much story as they do ingame. This was back when intro movies were really important and something to be proud of. Back in 1999 this was the bomb. Strangely after 11 years, looking back at this intro again, I still find this one of my favorite gaming intro movies.
I've just recently gone back to EQ and I'm loving the nostalgia, I'm loving the new content, new features, and they did upgrade a lot of the graphics. Wish they would char graphics though.
I believe about 6 GM's from the original Everquest days got together and attempted the recreate the world as it existed in 1999. Their project is called project 1999, and can be found at project1999(dot)org. They have done a pretty awesome job, and the world is almost exactly the same as it was back in the day. Soon Kunark will be released, and after a while Velious will be also, stopping at that expansion. If you all want to play classic EQ again, I highly suggest you check it out.

this intro movie just gave me a jolt of nostalgia, I has forgotten all about it. Still, the most amazing moment of this game was not the movie, but those first few moments when you enter the game world for the first time after character creation. I think I heard a voice whisper to me, "it begins".

Blizzard had been working on World of Warcraft for years, actually before they started EQ, and Warcraft (the story of world of warcraft) was released before Everquest. But on the other note no Everquest wasn't a clone of WOW, it was mainly based off D&D. Graphics sucked but man was it fun!

@RusconiDom After SOE took over the development of everquest thats what it became, but before the third expansion it was an entirely different game. It's easier now too make a level post 60 than it was for a newbie SK in classic EQ too go from 5 too 6. Try playing on the p1999 server through EQEMU and you'll see what I mean.
EQ was amazing back in the day, The community was equally as amazing, mostly because at the time people with pc's were much older than today, since pc's were still fairly new-ish. So the community was a very mature lot. EQ graphics at the turn of the millenium were very well done for such an enormous game. And the gameplay was extremely well done. I played from 99 to around 2004, untill pop came out and the game, for me, spiralled down the toilet. The fear of dying was pretty much removed...
People can bash the graphics all they want, in all honesty it wasn't even really about it. It was about the whole experience. Original EQ had one of the best MMO communities in the history of the industry. These days all people care about is graphics. It's really sad. Respect the past. Without it you wouldn't have games like you have now.
Honestly im a fan of both WoW and EQ. I played EQ first with my cousin but he didnt want to play anymore so i quit aswell (Lv 47 Shadownight) WoW i play with my moms faggot BF but hes paying so hey,...why not? ive played WoW longer so i have 2 lv 80s.
For EQ although i never made it far there was so much to see and so much to do i also had fun pwning my cousin in duels lol.
Wow was fun up until lv 80 when you did the same things over again, but leveling like i said was fun
Anyone know the exact size of Everquest compared to WoW. Everquest IMO has to be at least 5-10x the size of WoW. Hopefully Everquest Next will be similar in size.

The people of 1999 had it better, not only did they get to experience the wonder of Everquest as it helped usher in an entirely new genre of gaming while looking good at the same time, but we have had the fortune of watching this genre grow throughout the years with fond memories of how it all started.
The quality of something is not dependent on what else is around it. That's all in the perception of an individual. If it had the fun factor then, it has the same exact fun factor now.
Ok, good point. I will certainly not deny having loved every minute that I played this game and I never even ran with a "serious" guild and never saw any "epic bosses". I loved playing my druid so much. Maybe I will check out project 1999 :)

There are 17 servers still up, each with huge populations...the game is still live. There is only 1 free server...Freeport, it's a separate client.

Timelocked progression servers have been a huge hit, there are 2 servers due to the popularity, and both servers are still very populated 2 weeks in after the free account reactivation. Definitely shows people are interested and having fun.

This is coming back! EQ1 is going back to its original game without any expansions. It is called the Fippy Darkpaw time progression server and opens february 15th. Every 90 days or so the server will vote whether or not they want to add an expansion.

@roewedge the progression server will not be real classic, just like the other progression servers weren't. There will be non-classic overpowered items, revamped zones most likely and lots of other stuff. On p99 everything is real classic, check it out you will see.

@Nedala88 Actually they have claimed that they went through and made sure that there were no overpowered non-classic items in the game. I know some things will be different but at least it will have a stable server/good population for a while. I am just looking to enjoy the time and take a look back for a while :).

@roewedge well the p99 is stable and the population is decent (almost 1k peak hours which can make it hard to find camps) since over a year, and the staff doing a better job than live staff ever did, imo. Btw kunark release is at march 25.
But check out the progression server but when you get bored of it think of p99 and check it out, and while you there and see people raging about how unclassic the progression server is, send them to us :)

@Nedala88 You obviously don't know what you're talking about. With the exception of certain things that CANNOT be changed on a single server w/o gamewide changes (ex: graphics, zone setups, commands, etc), it is EXACTLY classic. If it wasn't available when the game 1st launched, it will not be available on the new server until that expansion is unlocked, which thanks to the Time Locks, will take 2+ years :)

@aggrofy You can play with just the basic game, you just don't have access to the content of later expansions without having purchased. That being said, if you buy just the newest expansion (House of Thule) it includes the basic game + every expansion made.

Man this intro tells as much story as they do ingame. This was back when intro movies were really important and something to be proud of. Back in 1999 this was the bomb. Strangely after 11 years, looking back at this intro again, I still find this one of my favorite gaming intro movies.
I've just recently gone back to EQ and I'm loving the nostalgia, I'm loving the new content, new features, and they did upgrade a lot of the graphics. Wish they would char graphics though.

I believe about 6 GM's from the original Everquest days got together and attempted the recreate the world as it existed in 1999. Their project is called project 1999, and can be found at project1999(dot)org. They have done a pretty awesome job, and the world is almost exactly the same as it was back in the day. Soon Kunark will be released, and after a while Velious will be also, stopping at that expansion. If you all want to play classic EQ again, I highly suggest you check it out.

this intro movie just gave me a jolt of nostalgia, I has forgotten all about it. Still, the most amazing moment of this game was not the movie, but those first few moments when you enter the game world for the first time after character creation. I think I heard a voice whisper to me, "it begins".

Blizzard had been working on World of Warcraft for years, actually before they started EQ, and Warcraft (the story of world of warcraft) was released before Everquest. But on the other note no Everquest wasn't a clone of WOW, it was mainly based off D&D. Graphics sucked but man was it fun!

@Utfooseball79 Storyline? Who cares about storyline? That didn't make the game as successful as it became. The formation of a super easy MMORPG incorporating technologies from a handful of other MMORPGs is what made it successful. The initial fanboy base wasn't that big.

@RusconiDom After SOE took over the development of everquest thats what it became, but before the third expansion it was an entirely different game. It's easier now too make a level post 60 than it was for a newbie SK in classic EQ too go from 5 too 6. Try playing on the p1999 server through EQEMU and you'll see what I mean.

EQ was amazing back in the day, The community was equally as amazing, mostly because at the time people with pc's were much older than today, since pc's were still fairly new-ish. So the community was a very mature lot. EQ graphics at the turn of the millenium were very well done for such an enormous game. And the gameplay was extremely well done. I played from 99 to around 2004, untill pop came out and the game, for me, spiralled down the toilet. The fear of dying was pretty much removed...

People can bash the graphics all they want, in all honesty it wasn't even really about it. It was about the whole experience. Original EQ had one of the best MMO communities in the history of the industry. These days all people care about is graphics. It's really sad. Respect the past. Without it you wouldn't have games like you have now.

Honestly im a fan of both WoW and EQ. I played EQ first with my cousin but he didnt want to play anymore so i quit aswell (Lv 47 Shadownight) WoW i play with my moms faggot BF but hes paying so hey,...why not? ive played WoW longer so i have 2 lv 80s.
For EQ although i never made it far there was so much to see and so much to do i also had fun pwning my cousin in duels lol.
Wow was fun up until lv 80 when you did the same things over again, but leveling like i said was fun

@bootstrut Um...not to rain on your parade, but you can't simply ignore the graphics, ever. As a species we're visually oriented, so it makes it hard to enjoy a game that seems to be animated by the team who made Clay Fighters. I respect that this game set the tone for MMO's but even the new EQ looks like a 7yr old rendered it compared to most games. As for that kid being a nub, perhaps, but we all were at one point.

The people of 1999 had it better, not only did they get to experience the wonder of Everquest as it helped usher in an entirely new genre of gaming while looking good at the same time, but we have had the fortune of watching this genre grow throughout the years with fond memories of how it all started.

There really was nothing better than this at the time, the quests were great where you had to TYPE, this was so cool a feature i kinda miss in today's games.
