Good kills, but is that without realistic gunnery!? Im being fustrated that with the limited ammo and realistic gunnery on you have enough to take down 3 fighters max, even if i aim for weak spots, fuel tanks ect they hardly ever take the enemy down with just a few rounds.... and with realistic gunnery off u take anything down with like 2 shots?!

You can take most fighters out with just a few hits if you really aim carefully, the mastery of deflection shooting takes quite a bit of practice in IL-2 because of the high relative speeds of the aircraft in a dogfight. It's also important only to shoot when you are really sure you are going to hit as anything else is just wasting ammo.
@Sovi3tskiy I can also tell you that speed is a huge factor in terms of deflection shooting. I am currently spending most of my online flying time with Rise of Flight as Cliffs of Dover sucks at the moment for so many reasons (performance, crashes, lack of features,...) and hitting targets in the WWI birds is much easier because of the low relative speeds. While I was getting around 20% hitrate in IL-2 I can get about 25 or even higher in RoF!
@JG52Karaya Yeah defection shooting can be tricky! :) I get hits as I see bits of enemy aircraft comming off but not enough to be lethal kills, I'll keep practicing! Thanks anyway, but speaking of RoF, is it worth getting it!? Good community!? I was trying to choose between it and CoD but to many say that the bugs in CoD make it horrible to play... Which is a shame it looks amazing on the videos...
@Sovi3tskiy Rise of Flight is definitely worth getting, it is an amazing combat sim with great graphics and some of the best and most dynamic flight modelling up to date! The only weak point in my opinion is the fact that the ICE edition only comes with about 8 flyables and the rest you have to buy seperately via the online store.
CoD has been a huge disappointment for me as I have been a die hard IL-2 fan for many years now and CoD just simply did not deliver and is still bugged.
@Sovi3tskiy Also: the RoF developers 777/neoqb have shown excellent support for their product so even if it can become costly buying their planes seperately it's worth supporting them and their further development of the sim. I own every single plane in RoF at the moment and look forward to even more to come along. On the other hand Luthier and his 1C gang have yet to fix their sim, it's still as bugged as on release with frequent CTDs online and generally piss poor fps
@JG52Karaya Alrite RoF looks like the clear choice for me then, thanks a lot for helping out pall, I'll probably buy the Iron cross edition and then just add on what ever is left in terms of planes, i was just a bit weary of getting it and then finding out no one is online ever lol
@Sovi3tskiy I fly with full realism, and with my Bf-109G2(favorite plane) I can take out a fighter with a half second burst(usually less). The trick is to wait until you are within 200m of the target, and don't use the autocannon within ranges of 50m or less(damage yourself with the shrapnel).

@ashmiles: Birds of Prey is the console version, the PC version is called "Wings of Prey". And IMHO IL-2 1946 is still the best choice as far as WWII sims go. It has the worst graphics but the largest number of flyable aircraft, maps, objects, etc. so give the user the biggest choice of scenarios.
I also have RoF and Cliffs of Dover but never gotten too fond of the first and still have to get a PC that can run the latter decently (currently stuck at around 30fps at low details)
@vrsman10: It's not an I-16, it's in fact a MiG-3U which is a completely different aircraft being much larger, heavier, faster and better armed. And in fact it was only built a couple of times in real life but for the sake of evening the playing field on that competition scenario they put it in to give the red side something that compares favourable with the "uber" Bf109G-2
@Kerventer: There is no server browser included in IL-2 like is the case on most modern games, you will either need to know the exact IP and port of the server you want to join or you can install "Hyperlobby" (google it)
This is where most people playing IL-2 online can be found!
@jeffg24LT21: Simply get "IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946", it has all titles of the series in ONE game!
As for PC requirements: Unless your PC is 5 years old I would not worry about them... I have a Quad Core PC and mid range card and can play IL-2 maxed out at a resolution of 1920x1080 with an average of 100fps, sometimes it even skyrockets up to 200+
@pvtsoap262: You need to be careful with the stick, in WWII fighters (as well as in most other aircraft) you cannot simply pull the stick all the way back without getting into some serious trouble. But the Bf109 is very docile when it comes to stall characteristics, planes such as the FW190, P-39 or even the Spitfire have much less warning for the pilot and can enter a stall or even spin within the wink of an eye!
@tacticalnerfmoder16: I was flying the Bf109G-2 in that matchup, not the F-4, although both are excellent fighters for their respective years, both in the horizontal and the vertical!
Their only downside is the limited armament but if you're a good shot you can get multiple kills per sortie either way.
I always LOL when people take gunpods on any kind of Bf109 online, that's like digging your own grave. The drag and added weight on those completely destroy what makes the Bf109 a good fighter
Amongst the modelled and flyable variants of the Bf109 are: E-4, E-4/B, E-7/B, E-7/Z, F-2, F-4, G-2, G-6 Early, G-6 Late (with Erla Hood), G-10/U4, G-14/U4, K-4, K-4 1.98ata, Z
There's also a great variety of FW190s, Hurricanes, Spitfires, etc. All in all I think there are over 300 flyable aircraft in the stock game if I recall correctly...
@Rte57: Depends on the aircraft. In case of the Bf109 (from the F onwards) all guns are mounted in the nose around the centerline so convergence is almost none of an issue. It is however very important on aircraft with wing mounted guns or cannons such as the Hurricane, Spitfire, P-51, FW190,...
I usually go with a convergence of 250m for both MGs and cannons but it's really up to your own personal taste and at what kind of range you usually open fire
@Rte57: No, why should it? And why in gods sake would you want to invert the axis in the first place, makes no sense! Stick with them as they are in a real aircraft - this is a simulator after all.
@Rte57: The F keys control the various types of views... and you can invert an axis in the control menu where all keys and axis are defined. When it asks for an input just move it the other way around and it should invert it!
@MiGro13: I have them on auto in the Bf109s most of the times and only close them when I'm in a tight situation (fighter vs fighter combat in the defense). Remember the 109s do overheat very fast when the radiators are closed and I really want my engine to be as cool as possible when I'm with the back against the wall. And I've flown this sim ever since it has come out and thats what I've been practicing ever since. Personal taste may vary of course...
@maxbie123: Yes it is possible to one shot other aircraft, either with some of the more powerful cannons (Mk 103, Mk 108, NS-37, NS-45, M-4 37mm,...) or with careful aiming by shooting the pilot.

@Prttimeninja2: There is an "icons" difficulty setting that you have to check in the game to make them work. And if that doesnt work then see if you have assigned a hotkey to the icons, that way you can switch between several different states of icons while flying
@Sephy7777: Yes we did loose quite a few, but almost none of these are shown here because they were mostly our mud movers being intercepted by the enemy fighters. I also only dropped bombs once or twice that round (as can be seen in the very beginning)

i was on hyperlobby with il-2 sturmovik (not 1946) and there was 1 game. I tried to join it but it just kept saying 'connecting to server' and didn't do anything. Is this because the server was on 1946 or something. thx

You should still use the ingame markings because otherwise everybody else wont see them unless skin download is on... many servers kick players if they dont use the ingame markings, and for a good reason. Having them on the skin (which is good for you) is not an excuse.
It all depends on how you set up your interface(controller) I have not got -to the level of expertise that JG52Karaya has, although I will give all challengers a fun and deadly encounter :):):)just pick your weapons my friends------:):):)
It certainly takes more time to get into than the average mindless fps shooter but has a much greater replayability... been playing it since early 2002 and still not tired of it!
I have the old IL-2 demo and I´ve learned to fly 109 with keyboard only... i can kill ace level AI pilots who fly LA5FN with my keyboard controlled 109-G2, full realism settings except the tags that identify the planes. lol.

Agreed. There may be less to manage than in a flight simulator, but nowadays shooters and other action-based games are evolving and demanding more thought by the player.
Guys, I didnt mean to say that I dont like or even hate fps shooters, in fact I do play quite a lot of them myself (FarCry, Crysis, HalfLife 2, CounterStrike, RedOrchestra, Battlefield 2 & Heroes...)

Dang your good at the ME-109 or BF-109. Every time I fly the BF-109 and i Stall a lot. i dont usally have enough speed to make tight manovers.

@Spikeystait: You wont find anybody still playing the original IL-2 from 2001, every kind of online activity is focused on the 1946 version.
As for the patches just google for 4.08m and 4.09m

so how do you play online, I been playing offline and I really wanna start playing online if its still possible, dunno if everyones gonna be switching to WoP or what. Also, I prolly need to follow that link I need tons of help right now I cant get my joystick set up right or anything and most of my dogfighting moves involve "DO A BARREL ROLL!" lol

You should still use the ingame markings because otherwise everybody else wont see them unless skin download is on... many servers kick players if they dont use the ingame markings, and for a good reason. Having them on the skin (which is good for you) is not an excuse.

It all depends on how you set up your interface(controller) I have not got -to the level of expertise that JG52Karaya has, although I will give all challengers a fun and deadly encounter :):):)just pick your weapons my friends------:):):)

In the controls interface you have a number of weapon options
Weapon1 is usually machine guns only
Weapon2 is usually cannons only
Weapon1+2 is... pretty obvious
Weapon3 is for rockets
Weapon4 is for bombs
Now you just need to assign a button on your joystick to each of these and you're ready to go!

Radiators do have an impact on flight performance!
The more open they are the better the cooling of the engine but also the more drag they create --> less speed
And vice versa

It certainly takes more time to get into than the average mindless fps shooter but has a much greater replayability... been playing it since early 2002 and still not tired of it!

I have the old IL-2 demo and I´ve learned to fly 109 with keyboard only... i can kill ace level AI pilots who fly LA5FN with my keyboard controlled 109-G2, full realism settings except the tags that identify the planes. lol.

Agreed. There may be less to manage than in a flight simulator, but nowadays shooters and other action-based games are evolving and demanding more thought by the player.

Guys, I didnt mean to say that I dont like or even hate fps shooters, in fact I do play quite a lot of them myself (FarCry, Crysis, HalfLife 2, CounterStrike, RedOrchestra, Battlefield 2 & Heroes...)

Nice video and use of real world tactics. Lol and i thought only I could fly. I love WW2 games because of the fact that its actualy high speed tactical dogfight. Unlike modern fire and forget missles. Im going into the air force after high school.
