At the moment, it wasn't. It was prettt severe, because it invalidated all oaths of fielty made to the King. Imagine, all your vassals are free to disobey you. You are no longer part of the Community. And in the Middle Ages, the community is everything.
It was not the end of the world, and as years went by, some Popes overused Excomunication to the point of making it pretty much nothing.
In the rite of excommunication as you've seen it said "Lord Gilbert has expressed no contrition or repentence", that there is a procedure and a dialogue that happens on the part of the Church (don't just watch the movie, hear the lines and see what is being said without being shown- i.e. use a critical mind). For Catholics, we shouldn't burn people or throw them out wasn't it Christ who said "you without sin cast the first stone". Don't look down on others, look at why you don't see Christ all
First of all Christ desired that we all be one. Excommunication is a last resort not the first act in dealing with people. Yes, people are complicated, life is gray and being a Christian is not easy, but being a jerk is. We should not settle for the middle of the road (Christian jerks). If one of our brothers or sisters strays than we dialogue and try to teach and offer healing and redemption, since we offer Christ's and not ours. Seperating people from the family of God is serious
@MrMeineNamen My dear friend remember that Jesus gave us a Church not a bible. The Church gave us the Bible. And Jesus gave them great authority "Whatsoever ye bound on earth shall be bound in heaven, whatsoever ye loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" and "whoever's sins ye forgive are forgiven them, whoever's sins ye retain are retained" God gave authority to men to do such things; He knew that His Church must be able to defend itself; excommunication is to shock the person into repentance
@MrMeineNamen Why? Its not done as a display of power or to be mean. Its done for the person's, and the Church's, own good. The person so that he may repent and find God's loving mercy and what is good for the ind. is good for the Church; also in case of one who refuses to repent, its like cutting off a dead branch off a tree so that it will not harm the rest. God could still bring that dead branch back to life if the individual lets Him. Hope this helps.
@odion07 but a person who makes a mistake or sin does not physically harm a Church. i understand what you mean though i suppose its a deeper concept than one can just comment over. good comment though
@MrMeineNamen "But are we not all one in the Body of Christ?" The Church is one, it is Christ's body on earth; whatever one member of the body does affects the others.(smash finger whole body goes ow) So yes, my sin can hurt the Church and everyone in it which is why it is so important to repent of sin; makes reparations to everyone hurt which is why we confess to a priest who is representative for whole Church. But you're right, too deep of concept for BoobTube comments. Peace bro:)
@odion07 my brother in Christ, God Bless you for speaking as a loyal son of the Church, and defending her past, present, and future-minds of your understanding and civility the world needs, God Keep you well~
@outtaker Thank you for the encouragement; everyone needs it from time to time. Say a prayer for me that I become a better seminarian and hopefully, a good priest. Let me know if there is anything I can pray about for you. God bless you, and happy Feast of the Annunciation!
@odion07 I will, good brother, for your courage and Christ's protection. The clergy always welcomes new representatives of Christ. Pray for me, to ever increase in faith and to be virtuous always. Thank you, and God Bless You!
With exceptions, the Catholic church of our nation uses the threat of excommunication to manipulate politics into their liking, and also to keep their followers' ignorance.
oh and besides, excommunication will only expell you from man-made rites, the only thing you need to contact god is prayer. I'm not afraid if they excommunicate me, the Spaniards who occupied our country used religion to scare the peasants into submission, they're saying, education will just lead their sons to hell, while the friars grab their lands and forced them to give their harvests
Na, I'm not saying this to piss you off and insult the Catholic church but, here in our Country, there is an extensive meddling of the Church to state Affairs, even threatening the Excommunicate our President if he passes a certain law.
@johnzkeePW Excommunicate our President? How can the Church excommunicate someone who is not even a member? Your accusations are mistaken. Also, the power of binding and losing and forgiveness of sins are not man-made rites; God Himself gave such power to men; the earthly shephards of his Church who are nonetheless sinners as all men are. So if there is corruption it isonly because men are corrupt and not because of God's Church which is perfect in its teachings.
Perfect in it's teachings? Do you remember when the Salem witch Trials? how about those executed for saying that the earth revolves around the sun in contrary to what the Church believes that the Sun revolves around the earth? Those who died at the crusades? How about those of other creed who have no knowledge of Christianity. Are they damned from the very start?
@johnzkeePW You really should do some research. Salem trials were run by puritans, not Catholics. No one was ever executed by the Church for the sun/earth controversy; it was not a dogma anyway. Died in the Cursades? Did you check to see who started them? Turks overran half the known world before Christians decided to defend themselves. Those of other Creed who honestly seek the truth but have no knowledge of Christ can still make it to heaven. So yes, perfect in her teachings. Hope this helps.
Hmm. Our bloody history will prove it. Our national hero was excommunicated for waking up our people's nationalism by exposing the friars and ultimately executed, The Calamba incident, where people was forcedfully taken out of their lands by friars. Perfect wow, how perfect. If it weren't for america we would be still kissing Spain's ass. thanks for bringing protestantism anyway.
@johnzkeePW Once again, you are attacking God's Chruch based on the sins of men. God's Church is perfect because He promised that he would never allow His Church to err in its moral teachings. It doesn't matter how corrupt or evil you find some Church members or leaders to be; it is they who are imperfect and not God's Church. Don't distrust or hate God because of the evil of men. God's perfect Church is made up of imperfect men. Remember this.
@odion07 and how can you be sure that the Catholicism was God's Church.
They're already tainted after the fall of Rome. already mixed with Pagan traditions.
I never did believe in Catholicism, your image of Jesus Christ was actually Pietro Bandineli, an italian, Pietro also modeled for Hudas Iscariote.
Catholicism also meddled with a Government who should be Governing people of multiple faiths. Really, it pains me to see beggars outside a church with elaborate designs.
@johnzkeePW I believe that the Catholic Church is God's Church because I believe Jesus was who he said he was, God. He started a Church and if you follow history and the Church's teachings all the way back to Peter it is only the Catholic Church that has this lineage. I'm sorry the world isn't perfect and that the Church, perfect in her teachings, is still made up of sinful men and women. Things will not be perfect until the end of time; until then we are called by God to be faithful to Him.
@johnzkeePW What other Church is there? What other Church has been from the beginning of the new covenant? What other Church is one, holy, catholic, apostolic, orthodox and living? Presbyterian, Anglican, Lutheran, Orthodox, these are all churches of the antichrist, at enmity with the Church which God formed. Only the Catholic Church, united in the Truth and the unity of the Holy Spirit, is the way to please God.
What, you mean to tell me that members of other sect and other religion will go to hell? Then that's bullshit, Your God is probably a Tyrant or does not exist at all, Sorry But I believe Salvation by Faith is not being chosen but by choosing, in some countries people doesn't even have the chance of getting to know Christianity, and Yeah, It pains me when someone Suffers and then they say, He *this and that* for you to see God's GLORY!!! Imma go ask people of other creed.
@johnzkeePW You ignoramuses , why dont you read the NT for the final authority in matters of Faith, Grace and repentance. There is no other means or name under heaven whereby men can be saved from hell and damnation except in Jesus Christ.
You are worng. What did Jesus mean when he said to his disciples ' I chose you, you did not choose me' ?
@odion07 The Church of Jesus Christ had nothing whatever to do with lineage. Go read the New Testament. Niether was Peter a Pope who lorded it over the Lord's people unlike those hypocrites , thieves , liars and murderes who persecuted Gods' people for over over 1600 hundred years. He didnt wear a triple crown and live in sumptious palaces and force the whole world to bow and kiss his feet or suffer death!!!
@Kirkee7 Since when has God's Church not been made up of thieves, liars and murderers? We are all sinners why people demand that Churchmen be perfect or the whole system is false is beyond me. Jesus said "You are Peter and upon this Rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" Jesus gave us a Church not a Bible the Church gave us the Bible what did Christians do before the Bible? Followed the teachings and traditions of the Apostles as we still do today
@odion07 Quite true, however the Roman Catholic church bears no relationship to what the NT has to say about the doctrine of the Church. If this is not the case then the Reformation would never have happened. Thank God it did providentially happen and so delivered us from those lies and invented traditions that shut people up in darkness for such a long time.
This is the exact thing that the Church needs these days. No more of this bureaucratic, flowery, erroneous nonsense. We need some fire and brimstone, some grit, to go with the love-based teaching. We cannot be afraid to step on toes; we need to break some legs if it means saving souls.
We exclude him from our Holy Mother Church and all her sacraments, in heaven, or on Earth. We declare him excommunicate and anathema. We cast him into the outer darkness. We judge him damned with the devil and his fallen angels and all the reprobate, to eternal fire and everlasting pain!
In that Lord Gilbert has rendered no act of contrition or repentance, and is at the moment, at liberty in the land, we do, here and now, separate him from the precious body and blood of Christ, and from the society of all Christians.
Lord Gilbert, Baron of England by the grace of his majesty, King Henry II, seized upon the person of a priest of the Holy Church and unlawfully did hold him in custody. Furthermore, in the presence of Lord Gilbert, and by his command, his men seized upon this priest when he tried to escape and put him to death. This is the sin of murder and sacrilege.

@akosigundam you must be one of those freethinkers who have bared their horns over the reproductive health bill issue in the Philippines. Indeed, you have a very different concept of what the church would be if your kind were running it. But, imperfect as the church is I'd rather have it than one allowing abortion, gay marriages, ordination of women and sodomites, incorporation of pagan and occult practices into the liturgy and calling it "inculturation".
@akosigundam I am a seminarian and I will not get into the issues here, but I disagree with all of the negative comments against this user. He/she has the right to express how they feel... sometimes we need criticism in the church how else will we know what we lack or do wrong?
Fucking catholics. So stuck up their own arses when it comes to the hainous crime of abortion of a rape victims unwanted bastard, but only too ready to turn a blind eye to the paedophile priests amongst them.
@humbuggerit: it is not the child that needs punishing. The majority of Catholics were not turning a blind eye to the crimes that were being committed; just because men are sinners does not mean that God's Church is not perfect-the perfect church is still made up of imperfect men. Peace to you
@odion07 - Well if I were in the very unfortunate position of having to decide whether or not to abort a child conceived through rape (and being Male I never will) then I would abort it, end of. I would answer to God come my time, and Man can go and fuck himself. Catholic or otherwise.
I wish that the Catholic Church was still like this! Instead now "bishops" are defending sodomite priests, abortion politicans, etc and excommunicating good Catholics, the the SSPX
@punkinpie44982 Oh, because of the excommunication of whom used the Faith for their own depravations? Yes, the Church will always do it; who mocks of the scandal of Christ deserves no mercy of salvation. Thomas Becket, ora pro nobis!
@requiemaeturnum Yeah! Yeah! Can you imagine this display just like this movie right here-all the american bishops assembled together exommunicating pelosi biden and all those catholic justices and sebelius and all them jokers? MAN!!!! that would be something wouldn't it!??!!? The message that it would send.... to everyone not just other Catholics.......... ... ...
Yeah --hey Raffzee -yeah "even if you hate the Catholic church" -yeah we know, the only form of open bigotry accepted today. Try saying the analogous about blacks, Jews, etc. in public.
The Church should do this to Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, and many others who support abortion then go to holy communion. Throw 'em out!!
Wow! An intense scene and a performance only Richard Burton could give! I'm not catholic, but what would you consider more damning, Richard's or God Almighty's pronouncement! Yeah,OK,I'm biased,I like Richard Burton,Peter O'Toole,Richard Harris, and those other wild & crazy old-school British actors...,
As a response to the comment about them dropping their staffs, though it is not readily apparent in the video (aside from Becket's) those are actually candles, which they turn upside down and extinguish on the ground, then cast aside, essentially representing what is being done to the excommunicant's soul.
Would be 10 times as wicked intense if it hadn't been cut off two seconds early, so we could see and hear those dozens of staffs smack the floor and fall like timber, which was the slam-dunk and most appalling part of the scene. I've found three or four uploads of this scene on YouTube; they're all apparently copies of the same botched effort; they ALL omit the last act in the final second. What's the point of doing that? I don't get it.

Burton was an overacting ham.

Being excommunicated would be worth it just to hear this speech and see these theatrics performed on my behalf.
smellincoffee 1 year ago
I wish they still did the "Bell, Book, and Candle" ritual (excommunication ritual). I think now all they do is write a letter to the excommunicate.

Should've said "Fiat, fiat, fiat." Pretty good though. Great movie too.

I dont normally rate Burton very highly as an actor; but I've got to admit he is absolute magic in this!

Why is everyone asking the intercession of the wrong St. Thomas? St. Thomas Becket, pray for us (and all the other Thomases, too... lol)

Thomas a' Kempis is probably--but not yet officially--a saint.
Ora pro nobis, anyway--we can use all the help we can get.

Thomas Becket, ora pro nobis!
pedrohqb 1 year ago
A.) Regardless of their pastoral misjudgments or even the scandal they give the faithful, they are not "bishops"; they are bishops.
B.) It's "requiem aeternam".

MAN!!!! that would be something wouldn't it!??!!? The message that it would send.... to everyone not just other Catholics.......... ... ...

Yeah --hey Raffzee -yeah "even if you hate the Catholic church" -yeah we know, the only form of open bigotry accepted today. Try saying the analogous about blacks, Jews, etc. in public.
The Church should do this to Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, and many others who support abortion then go to holy communion. Throw 'em out!!

One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies. The drama of this scene is awesome.
fdhuntjr 2 years ago 5

Even if you hate the Catholic Church, you have to admitt only they can do this kind of stuff. Excellent.

Wicked intense.
PortWestStudios 3 years ago 3
Would be 10 times as wicked intense if it hadn't been cut off two seconds early, so we could see and hear those dozens of staffs smack the floor and fall like timber, which was the slam-dunk and most appalling part of the scene. I've found three or four uploads of this scene on YouTube; they're all apparently copies of the same botched effort; they ALL omit the last act in the final second. What's the point of doing that? I don't get it.
