I never owned a slave. No one I know ever owned a slave. No one I know ever was a slave. Slavery was rejected by my country more than a hundred and thirty years ago, though we certainly weren't the last to do so. I feel no guilt-by-association because of slavery in my country's past. There is no burden to carry because of history. Only lessons to be learned.

You can claim africans enslaved africans but it doesn't null and void the fact that whites have oppressed people of african descent and africans for over 500 YEARS! in 2010, there are MANY whites who still act as if blacks should be subservient to them!

The worst part about slavery is the lasting legacy of the idea of race. Black, white brown... Why consider ourselves as colors and divisions/cast. Race is a colonial idea. And that idea is used to control and manipulate people by setting them against each other while rich people continue to get rich. We must consider everyone as human rather than seperate races. First of all! Slavery is wrong, unhuman and should never be possible again. Slavery is not just from white to black. Africans themselves used to enslave captured members of other tribes and later sell them to white slavetraders from Holland, England and so on. I don't want to minimize the role of the west in this. I just want to put things back in a somewhat more balans.
Slaves werent allowed to learn how to read and write. They had to also make up codes so that their masters or anyone humting heard them singing, they couldn't understand it. It could give them confidence and the determination because if they kept going they knew that someday, they could become free!

I think it was a matter of accuracy that it was mentioned more than sense of superiority. Growing up as a Nigerian/Ghanaian myself in the UK it was often 1st generation Africans who were made to feel inferior with African kids often affecting west Indian accents to blend in. Anyway great song, definitely one of the highlights of 'Lovers Rock'.

O please Sade is not a slave daughter. Her mother was a Nurse in the uk and her Father Bisi Adu was an educated Yoruba man. Why take wikipedia as gospel truth. The family used to live in Ibadan in the early 60s, before her parents got divorced and Mrs Adu took Sade and Banji (her brother) back to uk with her.

I am the product of enslaved africans, exploited amerindians, indians and the europeans who placed them there. It is what it is.

That scripture shows why they were enslaved..... it was for punishment. Here are some other scriptures to prove that the true Israelites and God were "black". Revelations 1:13-15, Jeremiah 14:2, Daniel 7:9, Job 30:30.

My ancestors were African....and, in a sense, so am I. We need 2 stop with this who "superiority" complex b.s. "Blacks" in the western hemisphere are of African descent...DNA testing has proven this over and over again.

Slavery was rejected by my country more than a hundred and thirty years ago, though we certainly weren't the last to do so. I feel no guilt-by-association because of slavery in my country's past. @shooter963 Slavery is a part of american history and after slavery blacks were oppressed in this country for over 100 years with Jim Crow laws, etc. It is not merely about slavery but about a mindset and about oppression. You can claim africans enslaved africans but it doesn't null and void the fact that whites have oppressed people of african descent and africans for over 500 YEARS! in 2010, there are MANY whites who still act as if blacks should be subservient to them!

However, that is history from which we can learn, not for which we should feel any collective guilt. You are also right that many whites are racist. However MOST whites are not racist, and to apply the faults of a minority to the rest of the population is simply wrong. The worst part about slavery is the lasting legacy of the idea of race. Black, white brown... Why consider ourselves as colors and divisions/cast. Race is a colonial idea. And that idea is used to control and manipulate people by setting them against each other while rich people continue to get rich. We must consider everyone as human rather than seperate races. Breaks your colonial chains! Read up on Buddhism, it'll free you for sure.

If that is the case why continue using the terms that "white" people started. Blackness... first why consider yourself a color? most people of African descent are a fantastic shade of brown. Second by using terms created by colonialists such as, "black" and "white" you perpetuate the colonialists to consider people of non European heritage as a type of colored human rather than just human on equal terms. First of all! Slavery is wrong, unhuman and should never be possible again. Slavery is not just from white to black. Africans themselves used to enslave captured members of other tribes and later sell them to white slavetraders from Holland, England and so on. I don't want to minimize the role of the west in this. I just want to put things back in a somewhat more balans.

Slaves werent allowed to learn how to read and write. They had to also make up codes so that their masters or anyone humting heard them singing, they couldn't understand it. It could give them confidence and the determination because if they kept going they knew that someday, they could become free!

So what if Sade is/ isn't the "daughter of a slave." There seems to be an ignorant belief that africans not descended from enslaved africans are somehow superior to those with direct lineage to the enslaved africans.

I think it was a matter of accuracy that it was mentioned more than sense of superiority. Growing up as a Nigerian/Ghanaian myself in the UK it was often 1st generation Africans who were made to feel inferior with African kids often affecting west Indian accents to blend in. Anyway great song, definitely one of the highlights of 'Lovers Rock'.

This is one of my favorite songs to listen to while I paint. Most of the other songs that I listen to while I paint are Sade songs. I love how she expresses her emotions so passionately. There are few artists who are capable of delivering their feelings in the way that she does.

Lol i'm not white, and i appreaciate a good reply. I'm Puertorican actually. Read up on our history, theirs a reason why i can relate to this, you have no idea. If you desire to cry, go ahead, if you don't, don't. I myself know it's hard to not get emtional or even angry for what some of our auntsisters had to go through so forth, im not a hippie.. im just myself, a human being who speaks her mind. O please Sade is not a slave daughter. Her mother was a Nurse in the uk and her Father Bisi Adu was an educated Yoruba man. Why take wikipedia as gospel truth. The family used to live in Ibadan in the early 60s, before her parents got divorced and Mrs Adu took Sade and Banji (her brother) back to uk with her.

how can u have sumthin bad to say about a song that supposed to be positive no matter where she was raised educated or not that doesn't change the blood running through our/her veins we have the right to speak about our ancestors and unless you were literally there in her life you Don't know!and even if she isn't doesn't mean she can't sing about the pain of slavery or maybe she 's tryn to sing from their shoes slavery occured everywhere and yes some slaves
did get to return home!!!!

I don't know why you got a thumbs down. You're correct. I really believe this song is about slavery in general and not just limited to the transatlantic trade. As people have pointed out slavery exists in some form or the other today so it's a universal message.
