A history lesson, war story, tragic tale unfurled!
I think if there was no religions, no communities, no countries, no sense of belonging & no sense of ownership, there would hardly be any conflict in the world.
"war is so useless that is so unbelievable. It's nothing like you've seen in american movies. No glam, no glory. Just very young man going nowhere, shooting at no one they know, getting shot by no one they know, then going home and trying to forget. Sometimes they can. Most of time they cannot." Ari Folman
hey you guys. you should hear sir folman about this movie.. he said this is a very personal movie and he has entirely no political intentions with this movie. this movie, for him, is his message to the generation that follows. and i think he did well achieved his intention. watchatink?
It started slow and I didn't really like the type of animation(I love animation but to be honest it wasn't fluid enough) but it did manage in the end to unsettle me quite a bit.
One of the things that amazed me is that it came out of Israel - where in the Arab world would there ever be this kind of brutally honest self-reflection and self-evaluation? This movie clearly points out the insanity of war - and the how stupid this conflict is. What will it take for the people in this region to live in peace? Someone please tell me - these are all brothers hell bent on killing each other. Makes no sense to me.
What will it take for the people in this region to live in peace? Someone please tell me.
In order for that to happen, the Arab and Moslem world will have to accept the existence of a non-Arab, non-Moslem (Jewish!) state in their midst. At present this seems highly unlikely. Why? Long story. You could start by reading Bernard Lewis.
Maybe you'll want to check out "Paradise Now". It was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 and won several awards at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. Also, if you are for peace, perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to point out the faults of another country. What is the purpose of doing that but to further aggravate one side.
If you're looking for peace than you shouldn't perpetuate the rivalry atmosphere by comparing the motives of Arabs to Israeli. You say you want peace but don't even realize that you really don't want peace because it's that same rivalry that is fueling this war. So as long as you're going around saying "Israelis have better self reflection" and other competitive comments like that, there will never be peace.
Good movie..., but it is not what actually happened, israel was responsible and should take responsibility for Sabra and Shatila. Turning this around of the Lebanese Phalangists..... get out of here.
Moments before the film started, i was affraid to become a anti-jew by this film. But it was different. It was a film that show a story of a man that wants to know his part during criminal events. I can't tell you how soon you must see this video.
I want to see this movie, I just hope Israel doesn't bail itself from its crimes in the 1982 Lebanon War and just blame the Phalangists. Also, Sabra and Shatila was the fault of the Phalangists under Elie Hobeika and the Israelis.
Bachir Gemayel was a true hero and hes one of the few Lebanese people loved by Israel, Lebanese Christians and a fastly increasing number of Lebanese Muslims who are beginning to see the Phalangists, or at least those during Bachir's era and not after, as war heros.
how can the phalangists be seen as heros? didn't they slaughter two towns of people in southern Lebanon, not saying it wasn't under the watch of Isrealis, just wanted to know how they can be seen as heros, is it because those people were refugees and not wanted
I hope not to dissapoint you, but the movie does blame the Phalangists heavily for the massacre - though i do not think it excuses Israel either. What i think is easy to overlook by the time the movie gets to the massacre is the general critique of the Israeli presence in Lebanon-uncontrollable violence that an invading army inevitably and unexcusably commits. So if you ever feel the ending is apologetic, do remember some earlier scenes

In Israel newspapers, they were talking about how damaged two houses were because of some bombing today.Well, there're no houses in Palestinian now, only dead bodies of children. These are not about being Muslim, Israeli or Christian. If you are a HUMAN, you can understand that the things that they are donig now is NOT humanistic.Iraeli was in Palestinian 19 centuries before and they think they are taking their own lands back.Come on it had been 19 centuries!
Great film! We in Bosnia experience same THING in Srebrenica in 1995, but Serbs went little further, they raped all young girls from kamp... and killed 10 000 Bosniaks (Muslim´s).
this movie looks great...i wanted 2 watch it in the cinema, but it wasnt bein shown in most of the cinemas near my town, so i suppose ill have 2 w8 4 the dvd...
They show that it's the Christian's fault while we all know that it's Israel that took the Christian Extremists there and who escorted non Palestinians out of the camps and refused to let go any Palestinian out the camp before destroying it... they occupied Lebanon for 25 years for God's sake, what a massacre to history!
Yes, anti war, sensitive to the Israeli soldiers & the victims of Sabra & Shatila. But he showed that the Phalange party was the only one at fault. The guys that went into Sabra were under Elie Hobeika who disgraced the name of the Phalange.Should NOT represent who all the members of the Phalang were. They started out as young Christian guys protecting their neighborhoods especially after the Christian massacres of Damour (by Palestinian militants who happened to kill Elie's family & girlfriend).
I didn't want to see the movie at first cause I thought it was going to be Israeli propaganda. I was wrong. It's a very neutral movie and Folman did his best to show reality, especially the cruelty of the lebanese phalanges witch is still unpunished.
I like the animation in this. It's very different and refreshing from all of the computerized stuff that everyone is so into. This reminds of the original Marvel comics. It's very unique and looks really good, animation and film wise.
I pray for Israel too, i see where there coming from they have been pushed around for there entire existence as a people. I believe when America turns it's on back on Israel will be the day of our downfall.
what the hell is wrong with you people? This is a trailer for an artsy-looking film. It's about personal experience, guilt, regret and redemption. I don't understand why you guys are arguing about frickin war politics, religion or whatever discriminating thing. So please, just criticize this trailer as any other trailer should be done. I personally think this movie might be interesting. DUMBASSES MAKE A COMMENT.
what are you two simps arguing about? you that hate israel- iran is organizing a flight filled with suicide bombers ready to go to palestine, if you feel so strongly about this, why wo'nt you join them i hear they're giving out necklaces with keys to heaven like they did in the iran-iraq war. lets test your resolve and stop talking about an issue that obviously could'nt be further away from you.
cheers from tel-aviv, israel the only democracy in the middle east. why isnt there an arab democracy?
Too few Israeli's have self analysis or a conscience. Thankfully there are a few. The world sees Israel for what it is and what it has done. It's only a matter of time until world governments are forced to take a stand - citizens of the world are crying out for justice in Palestine & the broader region. The blood on Israeli & US hands is incalculable and we must find a way to make it stop!
this is an open debate in Israel since 1982. its a great shame in Israel history. but Israel is a nation like any other nation and all nations of the world have sins and dirty history behind them. including the palestinians. I agree with you that this is must be the #1 priority in the world today to give both of these nations the independence and freedom they deserve and to stop this war once and for all
Who the hell are you to judge? Are you well familiar with the History of this place, Palestine or Israel? Are you being terrorized on a daily basis ever since your coutry was founded? Have you experienced the feeling of being pushed around no matter what you say or do? The existence of extremist like Hamas will hurt the US as well as the rest of the world you hypocrite...lets wait till these guys decide to spread their philosophy in your hometown mister
let us not forget that the Palestinians were there before Israel. & don't say that Hebrews were there two thousand years B4 the Palestinians. Statute of limitations on reclaiming inherited land expires long before 100 generations come to pass. Show some sensitivity. If people of a different religion/culture/ethnicity moved into my homeland, displaced me & mine, and prevented any & all means of economic & social advance; & continue violate the UN accord to prevent further invasion;what would u do
The Palestinians have experienced similar or maybe worst kinds of terrorism since all the conflict started. You cannot pretend that the Israelis are the only victims in here, since the Palestinians have no country as a start.
The slaughter in Sabra and Shatila was on Palestinian refugees who live in Lebanon.. And not by the IDF but the Christian Falangas. The mistake of us was letting them into the place.
and the reason why they have this violent philosophy is..... if you think the war in gaza is gonna stop hamas you fooling yourselves, you just adding fuel to the fire and increasing hatred against israel in the hearts of all muslims AND non muslims alike,
now, there is noone left who will sympathize with Israel. now everyone knows of Israels' expansionist and agressive policies in Palestine. Israels' time of gaining sympathy by playing the victim is over. Israel is now alone. this time in their recent agression in gaza they have revealed themselves and will no longer be able to drag anyone else into their bloodthirsty feud. this is a good thing. this film, nor any other will help.
Allah is worshopped by all not only primitive 3rd world, savage warmongering Muslim terrorists even european and american people worship him, too many people in the us and europe convert to islam(Allah is worshipped by all) btw i feel sorry 4 u that u dont have a god.
Has anyone been able to find a decent stream/torrent of this movie, I saw it in the cinema back in November and can't wait another 4 months for its DvD release.
In recent interview the director, Ari Folman, was very disappointed Germans didn't go to see the film. He thinks they were afraid of the theme.
Ari Folman says its because the German media promotion portraied it as film about "massacre, and the Germans from whatever reason don't want to see film about massacres. May I ask you if the Germans were also unease about the mention of words like "I've become Nazi myself" and "My parantes were at Auschwitz" or "it reminiscent me the Warsaw ghetto"?
2. Waltz with Bashir - As a child of survivors, said Folman, he had long been preoccupied by questions of circles of responsibility during the Holocaust. How much did they know? Did they realize there was a mass murder happening? How many knew what was going on in the camps?.
The television reporter notes that the sight of Palestinians coming out of the camp with their hands above their heads reminded him of the famous image of Jews surrendering in the Warsaw Ghetto.
1. Waltz with Bashir - Folmans friend Ori hits him with an apparent anticlimax: the suggestion that his obsession stems from a much earlier moment in history—that his dreams are connected to an earlier massacre, an earlier nightmare.
Its all about those camps, Ori suggests in the film. Your parents were in Auschwitz. The massacre has been with you since you were 6 years old. You felt guilty; you were cast for the role of the Nazi. Its true you didnt massacre. You just fired flares.
You are assuming I care what you think, which I do not - Also, try to come up with your own insults, rather than lifting lines from pop culture quotes
I am sick of your shit....one of these days some one will get you with your pants down. Pray to your god that your family will not be around when it happens, they will be fist then you. The world turns and turns and you will get the worst of it oneday...i just hope I'm their to see you suffer. Thats just how the world works.
I recommend that you take a few more years of basic English composition at your local elementary school
PS: wishing to see someone suffer is quite sadistic - you might wish to see a local psychologist, as well. you are obviously mentally ill and mentally deficient, which tends to be a trait found in common criminals.
You can play with words however you like, but sooner than later it will be your turn and you will be laying there in your own shit and blood begging your god to spare you the rest and bring you the end. Eventually every person will get an equal amount of pain and suffering and yours is long due....I just hope I am their to see it happen to you. Israel is an Criminal start and the world knows it.
Obviously, the words I used in my previous post were to "big" for you to understand - hence, your repitition of your previous post.
Also, I do not believe in gods, therefore, I do not have to worry about being punished by one. Obviously, you worship a bloodthirsty, savage god - most likely Allah, who is worshipped by only primitive 3rd world, savage warmongering Muslim terrorists
Whoa, just because you yourself do not believe in a God, does not give you the right to "bash" another.
Furthermore, your condescending attitude is not only annoying, but contradicting, since you used "to", instead of "too" in one of your sentences. If you're going to go around insulting other's intelligence, at least make an attempt to use "proper" grammar, ok? It's quite funny, as I have seen in a previous comment, you told someone to take grade school english classes....Ah....Irony.
And what right is that? Can you justify it, with proper logic, or are you just going to try and "out wit" me like you did with the other users you've "out smarted". Go ahead, try it.
That's how you justify your moronic insolence? What makes you think YouTube is confined to the United States alone? People from around the world visit this site. So, I would consider your proposition of the "constitution", null in void.
sorry, pal, neither you or any foreign government has the ability to prosecute me for thought crimes or opinions posted on the internet...deal with it - this isn't Nazi Germany
Haha, it seems as if you've been backed into a corner with nothing left to say. This isn't Nazi Germany? Well shucks, that'd be something if it were, considering how there isn't one in existance today. Dumb bitch.
The Islamist massacres butchering innocent civilians, men, woman & children in Madrid, Mumbai, Somalia, Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Eritrea, Uk Trains, France Printemps, Iraq, Afgnaistan, USA and countless other places where ISlamists murder non-Muslim and Muslims alike are ghastly and inhumane.
Some "religion of peace"
not too mention the "honor killings" and other senesless bloodlust of Arabs/Muslims against minorities, women, gays etc...
How great is it that even in a time of war an Israeli shows some remorse and humility. I am proud of how Israelis feel so responsible for the shabra and shatila incident, eventhough it was done by phlange militia. When a self criticizing piece like this comes from within the arab world, then hopefuly we will be closer to peace. I will be very suprised if the Syrians ever produce a pieced about the hama massacre, where syrians killeds tens of thousands of thier own people, let alone a enemy.

lil0ze, as far as I've heard him he said, "the film was success in France and Britain but the German didn't go to see the film because the media portraied it as a film about massacre. "
I can understand the Germans, they may worry to get another "Schindler's List". Though this film is infinitely more poignant than anything Spielberg could schmaltz up.
that song is track 4 on the soundtrack (JSB-RPG), but I found that it's very similar to Bach - Keyboard Concerto No. 5 In F Minor, watch?v=ZIaRpfaIUAY . though this take is faster
I just wanted to correct my mistakes previously. the video is victimizing the palestinians a lot. palestinians took advantage of lebanon useless government and imposed their terror.
The maker of the film is another Israeli naive left-winger who has difficulties to understand what a war is all about. Those people always search for meanings to blame their own, and never look on the other side as the blame.
their moto : "we should our land to the other side until there are peace. it doesn't matter if they keep on slaughtering us, we agree to peace over our dead bodies."
I never read the graphic novel but it was the most moving and powerful animation I've seen in the last 12 years.

I pray for Israel
and I pray for the Palestinians.
Any country that goes to war must do so to protect themselves...
don't kid yourself
no JEW LIKES WAR
IT IS NOT HOLY TO THEM
IT IS PAINFULL AND A MASSIVE BURDEN
there is no reward in "heaven" for them...there are only families in pain...on both sides
If you are looking for flaws in any country, you will find them...
I pray for all of you and the hatred you hold in your heart...it makes me so sad to read these comments.

I personally think this movie might be interesting. DUMBASSES MAKE A COMMENT.

If people of a different religion/culture/ethnicity moved into my homeland, displaced me & mine, and prevented any & all means of economic & social advance; & continue violate the UN accord to prevent further invasion;what would u do
poopybutttaco 3 years ago
The Palestinians have experienced similar or maybe worst kinds of terrorism since all the conflict started. You cannot pretend that the Israelis are the only victims in here, since the Palestinians have no country as a start.
DogEditus 3 years ago
The slaughter in Sabra and Shatila was on Palestinian refugees who live in Lebanon.. And not by the IDF but the Christian Falangas. The mistake of us was letting them into the place.

and the reason why they have this violent philosophy is..... if you think the war in gaza is gonna stop hamas you fooling yourselves, you just adding fuel to the fire and increasing hatred against israel in the hearts of all muslims AND non muslims alike,
mishy88 3 years ago 3
Actually, the war stoped the bombing in Israel for a while. before the war, gaza bombed cities in the south of Israel for 8 years.
NAORUTO123 3 years ago 29
now, there is noone left who will sympathize with Israel. now everyone knows of Israels' expansionist and agressive policies in Palestine. Israels' time of gaining sympathy by playing the victim is over. Israel is now alone. this time in their recent agression in gaza they have revealed themselves and will no longer be able to drag anyone else into their bloodthirsty feud. this is a good thing. this film, nor any other will help.

In recent interview the director, Ari Folman, was very disappointed Germans didn't go to see the film. He thinks they were afraid of the theme.
Ari Folman says its because the German media promotion portraied it as film about "massacre, and the Germans from whatever reason don't want to see film about massacres. May I ask you if the Germans were also unease about the mention of words like "I've become Nazi myself" and "My parantes were at Auschwitz" or "it reminiscent me the Warsaw ghetto"?
marinata35 3 years ago
Wow really? Oversensitive, I think!
LadyEmilyElizabeth 3 years ago
2. Waltz with Bashir - As a child of survivors, said Folman, he had long been preoccupied by questions of circles of responsibility during the Holocaust. How much did they know? Did they realize there was a mass murder happening? How many knew what was going on in the camps?.
The television reporter notes that the sight of Palestinians coming out of the camp with their hands above their heads reminded him of the famous image of Jews surrendering in the Warsaw Ghetto.
marinata35 3 years ago
You just fired flares.
marinata35 3 years ago
You are assuming I care what you think, which I do not - Also, try to come up with your own insults, rather than lifting lines from pop culture quotes

The world turns and turns and you will get the worst of it oneday...i just hope I'm their to see you suffer. Thats just how the world works.
vegassDJ 3 years ago
I recommend that you take a few more years of basic English composition at your local elementary school
PS: wishing to see someone suffer is quite sadistic - you might wish to see a local psychologist, as well. you are obviously mentally ill and mentally deficient, which tends to be a trait found in common criminals.
Ty311 3 years ago
You can play with words however you like, but sooner than later it will be your turn and you will be laying there in your own shit and blood begging your god to spare you the rest and bring you the end. Eventually every person will get an equal amount of pain and suffering and yours is long due....I just hope I am their to see it happen to you. Israel is an Criminal start and the world knows it.
vegassDJ 3 years ago
Obviously, the words I used in my previous post were to "big" for you to understand - hence, your repitition of your previous post.
Also, I do not believe in gods, therefore, I do not have to worry about being punished by one. Obviously, you worship a bloodthirsty, savage god - most likely Allah, who is worshipped by only primitive 3rd world, savage warmongering Muslim terrorists
Ty311 3 years ago
Whoa, just because you yourself do not believe in a God, does not give you the right to "bash" another.
Furthermore, your condescending attitude is not only annoying, but contradicting, since you used "to", instead of "too" in one of your sentences. If you're going to go around insulting other's intelligence, at least make an attempt to use "proper" grammar, ok? It's quite funny, as I have seen in a previous comment, you told someone to take grade school english classes....Ah....Irony.
