  • Impressive Steam blow off at about 6:00 I love this engine. Never seen it in person, but I love it

  • wow, what a great video sir, this was so much fun! my 2 year old son and i watched this together and he was so happy! you rock, great commentary thanks so much!

  • The best steam trains made right at the end of the steam era. makes you wonder what else could have been made....

  • OMG! This is fantastic. At 8:14 you sound soooo happy! Love the closeups you got of the drive wheels/gears turnin'. Loved it!!

  • a true passion for trains, god bless you!

  • Many thanks for uploading, it's great to be able to see these fantastic machine work. Thanks to youtube also visble in Europe! Thanks!

  • The more than 90 dislikes is because they invaded railroad premises and put items on the track.

  • You are just having TOO much fun! You guys are awesome, keep it up!

  • My two year old son and I LOVE this video! Bonnie & Clyde...you crack us up!!!

  • only indians can do that(hear the train coming from miles out)-lol jk-but yea seriously-I've tried

  • Great, so says the crazymad writer - ARRRGH.

  • Man, o, Man; Night Flyyer - one of the most outstanding videos I've seen on YouTube! I LOVE old Steam Engine Trains! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful trip you took as you followed the train. She looked so regal and proud as she lumbered down the line - it actually gave me chills and made me cry watching her press forward with such determination! What a classic gem of a train; you are most fortunate to have seen her in action. I loved the escort.

I'm gonna go watch Part 2 now.

  • Are you serious when you say that steam engines are the most powerful in the world?

  • I second that enthusiasim.

  • Very Nice.

  • NOBEL PRIZE FOR OLD LOCO VIDEOS !!

  • Great footage! Is this engine bigger or smaller than the Big Boy?

  • @lmorgan1974 Smaller. This locomotive, number 3985, is a Union Pacific Challenger type, which is the locomotive Big Boy was based on. They took a Challenger, and essentially lengthened the boiler and firebox, and added four more driving wheels with a one-inch reduction in diameter. The result was a locomotive with slightly less horsepower (the Challenger had less reciprocating mass, allowing it to move faster consume more steam) but the Big Boy had much more traction at lower speeds.

  • Great footage! Is this engine bigger or smaller than the BIg Boy

  • I still think N & W 1218 is a superior locomotive -and it burns coal. IMO if you're not getting hit with ashes it's not the total steamer experience. Hopefully 1218 will get out of Roanoke one day.

  • Fantastic running of a steam engine and a classic car!

  • I've determined why the steam locomotive is beautiful. Man is a force to be reconciled with just like a steamer. God is the reason behind the existence of the steamer just like trackage. Steam is a sign of man and God's togetherness. Our modern designs just will not suffice. Happiness in scarcely attainable in the suffocating confines of this current civilization. The 20th century is over. It's high time for a new industrial revolution. Fuck you President Obama. Your inauguration was a mistake

  • looks very like a big boy but they said there are no more running is this a big boy?

  • @CRUISEOBRIEN1

This engine is a 4-6-6-4. I believe the the Big Boys were 4-8-8-4.

  • Yeah I am talking about the part with the toy cow. I understand it isn't exactly extreme profanity, but my kid is at that age where she is asking questions and trying to read things, so it just made for an ackward moment is all

  • We may have to go back to this form of transport one day when the oil wells dry up.

  • @sbolandatutube I had the same in mind, but on a second thought, i think they build large and save nuclear power plants and all railroads around the world will be electrified. Baybe they will be back for a short period of time. I think if distances are to long for overhead power lines, the future steam locomotive will be in a different setting like nuclear-steam turbine-electric.

  • is that a 4-6-6-4 locomotive?

  • @homedad40 yes challanger is 4-6-6-4

  • Awesome video. Very well done. Excellent job buddy. Two thumbs up!! :D

  • The reason we watched this video is because my two year old loves trains. I am very dissappointed by the use of profanity in this video. I would like to encourage her interest in steam locomotives, but I don't want her to see things like that.

  • @pcallaghan1984 are you talking about the part with the toy cow?

  • Dave, some of your techniques in train watching are very dangerous, see some of my video's. In Australia, if you go trackside, we wear a reflective vest, just to be well seen. I was filming a NSWGR C36 Class inside a fence and kept all safety procautions.

  • This video, and part 2 are great!! Hearing how much fun you had doing this makes it all the better!! Great job!! :)

  • lol you should play chicken with a train, A 100 million pound train :D

  • that must take HOURS to get to the weight it needs to run!

  • ... c c c coins on track an extremely JUVENILE exercise ... .

  • Wow I thought your camara would jump right off the deck and hit one of the bearing boxes!!

  • when i fisrt seen this i thought it was a 4-4-6-4 but no its a 4-6-6-4 oh well

  • That could have been a nice piece of video work.....

  • That's is one beautiful locomotive. I really wish they would run steam locomotives again. They may not be as fast as the diesels of today but these are so much more beautiful to look at

  • What a magnificent machine! Just hearing that steam whistle brings back memories.

  • Steam locomotives are such fascinating inventions....those power, the weight, the speed and that classic look and the noise they make....that´s awesome. To bad there are only a handful of them in use nowadays.

BTW: one of the fastest steam locomotives was the empire state express No. "999". On May 10, 1893, the 999 became the fastest land vehicle when it reached a record speed of 112.5 mph. The 999 maintained the record for a decade.

  • I would happily give up all my posessions just to drive one of these for a day.

  • @SuperAWaC You're not the only one, brother.

  • ah.. it is the challenger not the big boy!

  • @MRoesterreicher1 the big boy is the heaviest steam locomotive no the faster or the most powerful (draw-bar HP)

  • @thepresident1981 who cares? re: but it is the biggest steam locomotive ever built

  • @MRoesterreicher1 I thought the UP Big Boy, aka Challenger's big brother, which is a 4-8-8-4 was bigger...Challenger sure is the largest operational though.

  • good on you bonnie and clyde. i enjoyed the vid..

  • Congratulations. Good job! :-)

  • You're stupid. No wonder train crews hate us railfans....

  • This video shows kids that its ok too play on and near the tracks...IF The U P police see"s this crap, they would take your ass to jail.....STAY OFF AND NEAR THE TRACKS... Im a engineer with the U P...and when I see this it irritates me...I enjoy railfans but this is a bit too much...

  • @upspfan really? teaches kids ?

  • @upspfan I have to side with you, I am an avid rc pilot and a big fan of nightflyer's videos, but as a conductor with BNSF, this sort of thing makes rail crews very nervous. Im sure they had the UP police on the radio and a hand on the emergency brake. People please stay off the tracks.

  • that penny is gonna derail that train!

  • i dont know why they still use the challenger and not one of the big boys anymore? wouldnt people want to see them back on the rails?

  • Thanks for sharing this!

  • holy sh*t ! lol lol lol

  • WOW, I can only Wish I coulda been there to see and enjoy all of this First-Hand.

But Thanks to You Dave, we have a Very Nice view of a Genuine Moving Museum; and a Tribute to American Engineering and Craftsmanship. (MOST Impressive).

    THANKS Dave.

  • Thanks for this, true steam enthusiasts, ya either get it or ya don't. Right on Bonnie & Clyde!

  • Way too much crap on this video. The text scroll is laaaame.

  • Coins can actually damage the rails by causing a localized point of high stress. This stressed area of the rail will then degrade over time as trains pass over it. Eventually the rail will fail.

  • @oisiaa balls.

  • @oisiaa get over it, plenty of debris such as stones wood and metal can get on the track, at times larger then coins, and the tracks already take the stress of a full train, the addition of less then a millimeter of coin isn't going to do more then the train itself to the track. Its just too insignificant.

  • sad movie ... better luck next time

  • My recommendations is keep on doing it. That's great.

  • Can I ask the railway track its not 4foot 8and a haft inches is it?

  • That was awsome, my children and I totaly enjoyed that, thank you for taping great american history in action.

    K.T. Murphy

  • For u 80 people who dislike this vid, listen to how much fun the guy videotapin is havin. U wouldnt dislike seeing the Challenger in real life.

  • 80 dislikes?!?!?!?!?! O.O what real legit reason could someone have to click dislike on this video? Seriously people!!!!

  • That awesome..

  • they have one on display Gainesville Midland here in downtown Winder, GA from 1958. shes a beauty. they do tours

  • Trespassing and putting coins on the rail? You give Railfans a bad name

Ever see a coil shoot out from tens of thousands of PSI? me neither.

I never will. Mr. Lee should stop the train and whoop yo ass.

  • I love the american flag on the side

  • thanks for posting

  • That thing is so badass.

  • Hello,

My name is George and I was wondering if I could have a copy of this video of this train. I would like to use it in a music video that I am making for a friend of mine. I have been looking for a video of an old train for a long time to do this project. It would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    G

  • @georgeboettcher download realplayer free.you can download vids off you tube.put then on a flashdrive and take it to wal mart and the can put it on dvd

  • nice vid

  • I've heard that while a coin can't derail a train, it can potentially cause flat spots on the surface of the wheel, which is one of the sources of that clank-clank-clank sound you hear as a train goes past. Not sure if that's true or not though...

  • @dehve86 Not even close to putting a dot in the wheel. The clank clank is from the rail joints.

  • Poetry in motion

  • holy crap!! thats the union pacific Big Boy!!!!! that train is awesome!! :D

  • There is bigger and even more powerful steam locomotives being operated in Sibir and North Korea.

  • helltbrother2 so disnyland is breaking the law by having machines that smashes pennies and put pictures on it

  • I've seen the Challenger in person. It was an amazing experience.

  • I love this video! EXclente Job. For those who never seen one of this locomotives un in close!

    Javier

    Bridgehampton, Long Island, NY

  • This is the best video, and with tickets, you can't see the outside view of all the cars

  • Jeeze... instead of going through all that... why didn't you just buy tickets?

  • Also....in addition to my last comment, you are also doing something people call "trespassing" and in this case, you are trespassing and Union Pacific Property. You can also get the law involved when you do this.

  • To people putting pennies on railroad tracks....tho this may not derail the train, it is completely against the law to "deface, mutilate or impair" any type of coin. This includes pennies, so please be aware that by putting pennies on railroad tracks you are breaking US Federal law. Well anyways..enjoyed the video and all, but just be careful what you do. Because as the say "No matter what you do, there will always be a consequence". Good Luck train watching!

  • @helltbrother2 Horrible law, MY coin, MY hardwork

  • @RcTinCan, Actually...its NOT your coin. Thus the law about not putting the coin on the track. here...let me explain more. 1st: The Coin it made by the Mint (a dollar and coin making facility). 2nd: Who runs the facility? The Government. 3rd: Who made the "You can't put you coin on the track" law? The Government. So you are breaking the law. Also....How are is it YOUR hard work. The only thing you did was drive to the tracks and put the coin on the tracks. You did NOT work hard AT ALL! BS excuse

  • @helltbrother2 Its called money circulation, meaning anyone, can own a dollar or a coin, money CIRCULATES.And who in the world say that i drive trains? If i did i would be working for bin ladin...

  • @helltbrother2 WHAT??? REALY IT HIS MONEY AND HE CAN DO WHAT HE WANT WITH IT AND TO ME THE COINS ARE WORTH MORE NOW BEING RUN OVER BY A CLASSIC TRAIN THEN WHAT IT WAS WITH OUR US NAME ON IT

  • Comment removed

  • Just need to get this thing up to 88 MPH!

  • @WoahSalmo tracks? where we're going we don't need tracks

  • @WoahSalmo This appears to be a freight engine. The passenger engines had much larger driving wheels. The larger the wheel, the more distance traveled with each turn. The fastest steam engines could easily top 120 MPH.

Here's a technical question for all you rail buffs: Where is the differential on a steam engine, or, for that matter, a box car?

  • getway car-LOL. great vid

  • that locomotive says one thing and one thing only: out of my way bitch!

  • Thank you for uploading this... My son is hypnotized :)

  • dave use his dx6i to RC this train LOL

  • What agreat piece of film. Thanks for posting.

  • thanks night, from to argentina i loved your job , enjoy it very much . the monster

  • Steam locamotives are the best engines in the world. They are a lot more interesting that diesel.

  • Aiptek cameras are cool, cheap as hell and they actually work :)

  • beautiful video. My childhood was spent watching trains.I really miss these beautiful beautiful machines, the sound, the smells, the anticipation.thanks again.

  • You should know that not a day passes where my 2 year old doesn't want to see your video. Such fun.

  • wow i have watched this video 820,303 times :)

we need to bring steam back

  • Steam engines are definitely not the most powerful locomotives; try gas turbines, mu diesels, and the latest generation of 6000 hp single-engine diesels.

Then look at what they do routinely on the Pilbara in NW Australia with mu-ed GE AC6000s.

Steam really is a quaint subject of archaeology.

  • @woodscritter Steam engines have couple times bigger torque than diesel engines and electric ones.

  • Im loving how you kept up with the train to show it in operation. Id love for that Train to pass through Texas. Its such a beautiful machine. And that whistle. Just Awesome.

  • i thank you for this viewing of the challenger. but i must say i dissapprove of your methods, railfanning is about more than chasing and flattened coins

  • nice video

  • beautiful! those things from the past are very evocatives!....

  • Am wirting from Mexico, this Locomotive is awsome, I just have one word to describe this "Value Teasure" and it is AWSOME!...

Great Job, I wish I want to been there, simply AWSOME.

Actually I am the leader of a Proyect in my University to take back the Steam Engine.

Obeusly with al the actual Engeniering processes for all the phases of this proyect.

    Again Congratulations!

  • you guys seemed to have so much fun with this, its a pleasure to watch !

  • Its people like you that give railfans a bad name.

  • his name is big boy

  • Where's Lincoln?

  • Very cool. My 4 year old loves this.

  • The railroad I worked for for thirty years NEVER looked like this! Great video...Thanks for a great piece of history...

  • you were in a dangerous place in the car......... right in the line of fire if english bob shoots at the pheasant that lit out of that ole brush pile @ 7:05

  • i would have to guess that even tho oil burning,,,,,,,, the internal workings of this machine are not unlike those of 140 years ago?

  • I love the train and and the Model A. My grandmother's father had one just like it: same four-door type.

  • My Favorite video

  • Never been surpassed! And I am of the same opinion as the lady in SA

  • You remind me so much of my grandpa he loved trains he actually rode on that exact one. he passed away 2 months ago and i'm so happy to see another piece of him in this video! Thanks so much.

  • The Challenger was a Fantastic Locomotive! Was it the best Unit ever? Some old Hoggers said yes, and some said she slipped a lot? I guess like anything it comes down to who you talk with, Old Railroaders that is, the rest of us are just Fan's. Great Engine, i wish my HO Road had one, haha!

  • hey your caught some good footage there

  • Greta, great, great!!!!

    Incredible machine and top video!

    Greetings from Brazil.

  • From Budapest . Hungary , Europe .

  • Yah, this is just great!

  • Best Challenger video I've seen . . : >) Great editing . . you really captured the public fascination with old steam trains !

  • what a great video :)

  • Thats a fuckin IRON HORSE right there

  • This video made me smile. Not at the locomotive, which is a truly awesome machine, but at the fun you were having when you were filming it!

  • That is incredibly cool. Such large-scale mechanical precision, so much power. It's just a shame that there aren't more like it left on the rails. My great grandfather, who died before I was born, used to be a rail worker and there's an old steam locomotive on display at Fort Riley, Kansas that he laid the track for when they moved it in. I spent HOURS as a kid climbing on it and tracing pipes figuring out what all the valves did. American nostalgia. It's disappearing fast, unfortunately.

  • awsome volume at full

  • wow..seeing this old steam locomotive...feels like i'm going back in the time even i never been that far and long....

  • You sound like Jean Shepherd.

  • hella lame dog

  • Dude..fantastic video..

  • wonderfull!!! Hermoso video!!! :)

  • Thank you for your time and effort that I was able to see this....

  • i think the coins will be worth a "little" more when this train made it to tin foil :)

the coins are now infested with the power of this loco!

  • Freaking awesome. Never truly appreciated trains until now. Steam or otherwise. I get it. That thing is freaking neat...what a beast. Big menacing looking front end...and thereès something about watching the motion of those shafts (no jokes please)...neat machine...wow...

  • was i just masturbated

  • Thanks for posting this. I live in Schenectady, NY, home of ALCO the birthplace of this beautiful machine.

  • Living near the crossing of the Milwaukee rd and the EJ&E. My 2nd story attic bed was a listening post as the winter night air carried each and every sound of the Steam Locomotives right into my room., Rising and falling wailing moan with each engineer having his own tune. The rails were my playground. Walking home after playing at Leighton Tower, was exciting after nightfall. Walking on the rail, following only the glisten of the distant signal lights, was my comfort during the war years.

  • I like trains.

  • Wow, a Challenger. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • I'm an elderly South African lady who has had a love-affair with steam locomotives since my earliest childhood, and it absolutely breaks my heart to see these magnificent machines being replaced by diesels - we here in S.A. refer to these as "paraffin-tins" - nothing but soulless monsters, while each and every steamie has its own unique 'stack-talk.' Thanks to steam preservationists all over the world who are trying to keep the memories alive...

  • @UFEZELA look for WOLSZTYN PARADA :)

  • @UFEZELA I know what you mean, I was a kid in England when steamers were still running, when the parrafin-tins took over, something died inside. I don't care if they pumped out some smoke/steam, riding on a steamer was a thrill. I miss it. Maybe thats why I have so many H0/00 models in the attic waiting for a rainy day to set them up. 50 years from now I doubt people will be flocking to see a parrafin-tin making a 'sentimental' journey!

  • @UFEZELA The unique characteristics was one of the reasons to obsolete steam locomotives.

  • @UFEZELA they are great i love them too.

  • lol 3:04 hahaha

  • the best view is from the pocket cam

  • that van looks like a ford

  • Surprised the police didn't have a word with the bloke videoing and driving, very dangerous!

  • 2:51

    EARTHQUAKE!!!

  • 1from a friend

The locomotive appears to have been coasting downhill with a closed throttle---"drifting" in steam loco jargon, a carry-over from steamship and boat terminology. It's flat country, but if the train was going down a watershed toward a river, it would have going slightly downgrade. In such a situation, the engineer would get the train up to the proper speed and then drift, using the air brakes to hold at the speed he wanted. There was no puffing exhaust sound, just some clatter ...

  • Actual top end back in the day was 100mph... NOT 70mph.

Now that it's an heirloom, it is not going to be stressed so. The high speed was exclusively used for passenger runs. However, not a common event as the lower weights pulled were typically served by non-articulated steam.

Big Boys were entirely retired because of their stress to the rails. Challenger is equal to two to three typical diesel-electrics in traction power/ weight. Obvious exceptions: Big Blows, Double Diesels, etc.

  • Damn Great Video.Where did you get the pocket cams?I'd like to get something like that

  • Sexy Asian women **busizz4me.info**

  • @dreambuilders48808 Thanks I wasn't aware that there were that many leftOnly knew of the 2

  • WOW!!! Never seen a 4-6-6-4 before, only the BIGGER BIG BOY 4-8-8-4. Either way they both get the job done. With power to spare!!! Good video:):):)

  • Now, THAT"S what you call a steam engine! (or is it an over-sized tea kettle?) :)

  • also, jungs aus Deutschland? Bin voll einsam wer hat Bedarf zu texten
