@JWoodFoto the little flaps are there as brakes to slow the roller coaster down if it does roll back, which it did. the flaps retract for each launch and come back up as soon as the coaster is on its way up. and plus they would never send out the next ride until the entire track was cleared. these actually happen pretty often

rollbacks aren't that common but they're not dangerous... rides like this work to minimise the amount of energy needed to power the coaster, after the initial launch the rest of the ride is simply propelled by gravity but if that first push isn't strong enough it won't go anywhere

I can only guess that less power is safer (even if you roll back sometimes) than more power that can potentially derail you.  When I think about it logically it would appear a rollback isnt a bad thing really, it just means whoever figured out the math behind the ride was pretty much EXACT (pre- variables) about how much power it would take to get the ride around the track as intended.

How often does this thing roll back?? I mean not THAT many people film themselves on the ride yet there is a decent amount of roll back videos on here, and there it has probably rolled back many more times that weren't captured on video. @Lduke904 it depends on the ride. Kingda Ka rolls back a lot, Top Thrill Dragster doesn't roll back as much because it is more efficient than Kingda Ka. Besides, Top Thrill doesn't roll back that often. mostly in the morning.

@CedarPoint411 Are you kidding? I've been to Great Adventure at least 100 times since Ka opened in '05, and I've only seen 1 rollback. Intamin took what they learned from TTD to help reduce rollbacks on Ka. That's also why Ka hasn't stalled at the top.

@pants100UTA there are many different factors that determine if the ride will 'rollback'. on top thrill dragster, if the weight distribution in the train is off, high winds at the top of the 420ft tower, pulley hydraulics not at 100% during launch..these things can lead to a rollback. i got 2 when i was there last year =) the guy that worked there told me that
