I grew up hearing about this bombing, and the world controversy about it.. My father was in a U.S. observation post on Mt. Trocchia on the other side of the valley and saw it all, from beginning to end. If not in the monastery itself, the German troops were very close to it and destroyed an immense number of allied troops from that vantage point. The Gustav line was impregnable and stayed that way for 3 more months after the bombing. The whole 5 months at Monte Cassino were brutal for everyone.

Very sad. The destruction of this unique, grand, historic monastry was one of THE tragic mistakes made by the Allied Forces in WW2. Though understandable at the time .. the historical record & detailed analysis of the facts as they existed - without the wonderful gift of hindsight - makes this clear .. it nonetheless remains true that the German Forces were not in occupation of the building prior to its destruction. It shows, I think, yet again, the utter futility & tragedy of armed conflict.

Wow, what BS. Have any of you even been there? I have, and you have to honor all soldiers who endured this horrific scene, both sides, and you cannot apply any logic in hindsight. The Abbey was key to the Gustav line, and the Allies couldn't get past without taking it out. Read Matthew Parkers' book and learn, my friends, the battle was very sad. This solemn catastrophe should unite we sons and grandsons, not divide us.

Another thing: The Germans are not to be blamed the Abby's destruction. They only positioned themselves at a high point of a valley with the only ancient, stone building on it for a camp meeting they were having. They were attacked by the allies while they were having this camp meeting, singing songs and working out personal demons during confessions with the priests. Those Allies!

Yet not far away the retreating Grmn army burned the Roman Nemi ship that was on display, because they loved art.

In fact, the Germans had abandoned this abbey of Monte Cassino, and even evacuated most monks and the abbot, and most art work from this 6th century founded historical site, to save it. Kesselring did this. The Allies probably did not care, and maybe some anti-Catholic sentiments also played a role. Monte Cassino was the symbol of Christian European history, its origin, and of Christendom as such. Maybe they hated this? After destruction however, the Nazis used the ruins to fight from!

I honor the German paratrooper's impeccable behaviour in regards to this battle,they acted like real soldiers,and i am once again shocked by the lust for destruction of the Allied American/Jewish side. I can only explain this by the hate they carry towards the Roman Catholic Church and Christian Tradition. This beautiful monastery was founded by Saint Benedict, and was a major European cultural heritage. Shame on you, Harry,and shame on your family's name.

If the Germans wanted to preserve the monatery then they should not have used it as a base.... isnt that patently obvious! So really if anyone was in disrespect to the church it was the Axis! They used a sacred place as an army barracks.. in essence they brought the battle there... not the allies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
