@scarred10 indeed. Its very much different compared to boxing and other similar styles. In karate the point is not just to be fast at moving your head away from an incoming attack, but your whole body. Also keeping your hands near your face makes your punches more visible to your opponent when you throw them as opposed to keeping the hands shoulder height and throwing it straight. the main thing is to totally move away from the attack as opposed to blocking it. Less damage to oneself.
if you want to bring back classic shotokan kumite to these day,
i think we should create a light body protector that able to protect karateka from punch and kick. because karate punch was able to broke ribs. and i think you know how lame kids these days.. they can't stand a pain even a little bit..
Solid karate even under the point system. These days it's all about speed and "reaching" your target. Karate deserve more respect. Bring back old school karate!!!
a legend. a guy totally dedicated to training. i do think some things have moved on but this guy is just about the karate, no frills, no books, just training. well doen frank
Trained under Frank in the mid eighties at Everton Red Triangle,he was awesome ,remember one of Franks seniors telling us how the JKA national team geared all of their kumite training to beating Frank Brennan! What a shout? Said it before,Liverpool karateka take some beating......many have tried, very few have succeeded.
I have been instructed by Frank Brennan on numerous occasions (including yesterday morning). A superlative karateka with a clear, structured and inspirational teaching style.
I note that Ian MacLaren provides the voice over - a terrific guy and probably the dirtiest fighter I've ever met.
Martial Arts is not 'about' the street. It's about atittude, fitness and respect within the confines of a particular set of constraints and techniques. With all of those you wouldn't need to fight 'in the street' unless you jumped on unknowingly and then the best technique in that situation is to get out of there fast if you can.
Of course, people do not fight like that in the street...however, I wouldn't like to see what he could do if backed into the position where he has to defend himself
I'll give him the fact that he's that good at karate but I don't think that that sort or stuff would be good in the real world, where people like to play dirty and don't follow a set of rules.
@mynamesnotwill ur talkin through ur arse! hes gifted, hes one of the few karate men that can use karate in its rawest state and make is effective on the street! that man is karate in carnate! be under no illusion, or even better start him on the street see how long u last!
@mechanix5 'I'll give him the fact that he's that good' i did no say he was bad but you have to think about from the perspective of someone who doesn't do karate, in my opinion people would not bow to each other before a fight in the street, and don't get me wrong here it is blatantly obvious that he is strong but its just not how people fight outside of a dojo.
@mynamesnotwill so u hav no clue of karate but decide 2 give a general sweeping comment regarding one of the most world widely respected practioners of karate and one of my sensei 's and expect noting to be said. the bow is a sign of respect thats it. i have been demo-ed by this man .. trust me ... hes the best! comparing a karate kumite fight 2 the street of course is silly, but that attituide and power and awareness all carry over
@mynamesnotwill Frank Brennan is a very dangerous man who just happened to choose Shotokan karate as his method. You have no idea how fast this man is, and I don't just mean physically. He has an ability to instantly recognize and exploit any vulnerability. And when he exploits it, he does so with knockout power.
this bloke was awesome if i can get to 100th as good i'll be made up

one thing that strikes me is that nobody defends or moves the head at all and are always open to the counter

Chuck Norris is so overrated... I do my Shotokan Karate gradings with Frank Brennan himself, and from what I've seen of him, he's the real deal.
