My friend's horse and I were in a competition I tried both Canter & Trot to go over the jump, but I quit because the horse wouldn't go over it, and I won first not even doing anything. But they said "I was nice and didn't push my horse to know what I wanted"

And that I knew what the horses felt and how.

Good decision at fence 1. If you can't get it at the canter drive them to it at the trot. A refusal at the first fence can be very discouraging but you rebounded well. Beautiful round and a very athletic horse.
