  • Song came later, but reminds me of being a young man in hometown of bell, ca.

  • 9 guys don't know what music is

  • @TheUnclepecos Nobody could say it better and it always, always bears repeating. There IS such a thing as musical taste or if you prefer, appreciation for an artist whose skills and natural talents are almost without peer. This is an example of a master guitarist and lyricist, and anybody who "dislikes" or "disagrees" has exactly what you said so well. They have NO musical taste or appreciation at all. NONE.

  • Master of the "ghost note" !

  • Minnesota version: "your hands are cold, and your lips are cold."

  • @jimicarlo no... chuck norris is the knopler of the non-guitar world.

  • WOW a strat through a claen twin never sounded any better.Thank you to who ever posted this one.Truely music for the soul.

  • 9 people are stupid

  • "You just call em you know, you call em, we'll try and play them!"

This is what Mark tells the crown right before busting out with the infamous intro to This song.

  • Figured the gig out. It is from Arena 1980.

  • Does anybody have any clue as to which gig this was recorded at?

  • i love this version, so damn tight

  • I really like the way Mark sang this version. It goes perfect with the song.

  • I like Every song that DS and Mark knopfler made, it is hard to choose a single song that I like the best. Right now Down to the waterline is slowly making it to the top of my list of DS favorite songs.

  • I turned so many people on to DS after I had been in 1978. You will notice that the best guitar players like Hendrix, Clapton, Knoffler, rarely look at their hands. Sublime!!!

  • awesome!... magic fingers!!!

knopfler is the best rock guitarist of the history

  • The very best. Knopfler you crazy genius!

  • The opening to Down to the Waterline always gives me goose bumps. Simply amazing.

  • This is just simply awesome. Thank you so much Mark for the music that you created for the world to hear.

  • This is rock and roll perfection.

  • oh the glory of being able to play guitar. how sweet it must be...

  • pura candela!

  • Is there a dvd of this? begging.!

  • @seikenflyer Yes. It appears at the end of the Alchemy Live DVD as a bonus feature.

  • Where the !@#$# can i get the mp3 version of this. Thats just fantastic.

  • PORRA. Dire Straits faz o sangue ferver!

  • a little chicken picken goin down here!

  • doesnt get more cool than that

  • 1:07 fantastic!

  • extra, uvijek mi nest dobro kad ih slusam,.

  • I love Dire Straits!

    We want them back!

  • +++++the best!!!

  • It's amazing - guitarists recognize the skill, but it's hard to believe he's delivering a soulful vocal too, effortlessly!

  • Sounds as good right now as it did in 1979. And it really evokes that year.

  • can't say it in words, just phenomenal

  • From their first Album-Got it on Cassette. Miust get an cd version!

  • He does things on a guitar that I don't have the faintest clue how he does them let alone be able to imitate...

    A guitarist

  • @Modonaut57 there is just no way you can replicate his finger picking, he is the best in the world in my opinion when it comes to his style of finger picking. He is in his own league!

  • @Modonaut57 PS he NEVER uses a guitar pick, always his fingers! stunning huh?

  • @futureunknown Did you know that he have always a pick in a pocket. There's a document about MK and he shows the pick.

  • Somewhere in 1979 in London if I am right. Not sure about London though.

  • where and when did this concert take place?

  • you just cant get enough of mark, what a musician. I did actually meet mark in york,by accident trying to get a ticket for the knotting hillbillies. the man ouses talent and above all is a gentleman I never got the chance to thank him or the guys for that great day of music. Thankyou now mark sorry its belated.

  • Mark Knopfler doesn't masturbate, he plays the guitar and that gives him triple pleasure...

  • leck ich am arsch... wie geill hecki n' buzzel

  • LEGEND

  • Coolest ... ever!

  • looveee

  • Go Mark. You re-defined cool.

  • How can people dislike this, is something i'll never get to understand...

  • that's some pretty hot guitar and vocal work here. Marc Knopfler at his best for sure.

  • I think I have to agree with all comments: Absurd good!!! There are still people that are deaf and voted down. Guess what: Shame for you!

  • ohhhhhh yeah

  • <3

  • how the flipping shit-bird does he do that fast scratchy picking in the intro riff... smart ass!!

  • 1:06 - Eargasm

  • BEAUTIFUL songggggggggg thxxxxxxxx *(*-*)*

  • God didn't create Mark Knopfler, Mark Knopfler is god.

  • this is stunning!

  • woah! it's better than studio version GREAT!!

  • I can't believe than someone doesn't like this song. This song is fabolous

  • Fuck, I'm 21 right now and I would have been born in 1965 in order to can go to all the concerts of dIRE sTRAITS, Michael Jackson, Queen... and not today with Kesha, Justin Bieber and this kind of shit.

  • Fantastic song !! I think from their first record and I remember now Faux Rolling Stone's reviewing it with a line as " such a shame this band will not be remembered" just like they should have written about The Replacements. Damn the water line and deluge the phones to play this and some great Replacements song tonight . Hold my Life until I'm really to use it.

  • My feet and fingers cant stop moving!

  • I just can't sit still and listen this. I've got an ritmoturbulentemocional attack. mr. Knopfler is a transmitter of unique feelings that can't be compared even with an orgasm!

  • i like dire straits one because they are amazing but two is that they didnt really change his voice in the studio where as most bands now they sound good on the cd and then they are terrible when they play live but thats not the cas with dire straits

  • You call 'em, we try and play 'em.

  • Pure magic and the audience just kinda laidback and taking it in,great slide guitar by Knopfler and tight beat backing him up, music has changed but this is timeless

  • Is that a Fender Stratocaster?

  • @Juustokauppias yes, but Marks Fender!

  • fantastic.

  • He's the Chuck Norris of the guitar world.

You know how Alien has a second mouth coming out of its mouth, and another inside that... well I imagine that Knopfler has the same thing going on with his fingers... tiny little fingers come out of his fingertip, and then even tinier finger come out of those, and they just tickle the guitar until it submits and does his will.

  • number fucking 1!!! long live rock and roll long live the blues and LONG LIVE THE MASTER KNOPFLER!

  • gotta be one of the best bands in the world, just watch that man play........

  • That lick starting at 1:08 is insane. Pwns any metal guitarist. nuf said.

  • the best

  • The best of the best of the best!

  • "Your hands are cold but your lips are warm"

  • Thanks for being born.

  • What concert is this from?

  • @jOntzohr the concert is Wembley Arena '80

  • @TheSamuray81 After doing some research i'm now 100 percent sure that this i from Dortmund '80. A concert you can check out in it's whole pride here on youtube. Just type "dire straits dortmund 80 TV-HQ". But thanks anyway! Keep enyoing Dire Straits!

  • Mark Knopfler - The Man, The Myth, The Legend

  • That last chord is beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • minor 9th chord

  • I also love it at 2:05

  • i love it when they bend strings!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that guitar lick at 1:07 sounds absolutely amazing

  • oilalla k difficile=)

  • Pick Withers really made that rhythm section.

  • comme il avait la gouache en fait !! toujours une version incroyable dans les concerts... quel talent!

  • Aie, ca fait mal au fesses

  • He has such a sweet phrasing for old blues... it amazes me every time i hear him... Mark really is one of the greatest guitar players in history by many things such as technique, taste, melody, composition and so on, so he definitely shouldnt be compared or graded, just enjoyed...

  • I completely agree. He is truly one of the greats.

  • @Timmonsec I would say something, but you said all.

This guy is far ahead, beyond the standard.

So unique, you listen the guitar and you say : This is Knopfler, for sure...

  • @Timmonsec

But before all these my friend........what a Great Person!!! I love u Mark!!! i wish i was born earlier :))

  • @Timmonsec hear haer true legeng

just been debating with my BF unrealguitar player can hold a key singing with feeelin

  • In all this disputing we are losing sight that one thing is the style and quite another what you do with it. Mark really plays his heart out (OK, lets begin: he does have a heart for music to begin with) and his style shows it. Eric Clapton, as I understand, was the first guitarrist that *taught* *two* other guitars how to play together in harmony as a triet. Most can barely play with themselves, let alone another guitarrist.

I like all of them, and feel no need whatsoever to choose.

  • Oh and while you guys are busy shitting on Eric Clapton, you might want to remind yourselves how Mark Knopfler owes his playing style and his sound to Chet Atkins.

  • Apples and pears - as long as I have enough room in my CD/LP shelves I don´t have to restrict myself to just one of them all. Ain´t I lucky? ;)

  • Too bad they cut out the intro.

  • Mark Knopfler.... A true virtuoso on guitar. When he grabs his guitar there's no stopping him.

  • mark knopfler you rule!!!!!!!!

  • grande!!!!

  • zo oud - zo mooi !

  • listen to this or anything mark plays and then tell me eric clapton rules . eric wishes he had the creativity , mark rules the rock guitar , his sound is so unique it gives me chills , i saw them in concert in 1983 unfreaking believable !!!! happy birthday dude , you still rock !

  • well Clapton is second rate and 3rd and 4th rate compared to guys like Knopfler and Albert Lee. The guy just lost all his fire after the Layla lp. And his tone is waaaaaaay overated.

  • Yeah, Clapton said Mark was the best guitar player alive. Take it to the bank!

  • Mark Knopfler is my favourite hero fuck superman and batman

  • let's go down to the waterline

  • wow the best guitar i ever heard

  • Dire Straits played 'Down to the Waterline'

    "and I...jizzed in my pants"

  • Only the best can knock the &$#@ out of their own stuff

  • i love it

  • Have a look at 'Where do you think your going' from the same concert. Fuck that would have been a show.

  • This guy is so good, wish i could play like him...

  • that fast lick at the end of the solo break right before the vocals come back in pretty much makes me jizz every time i hear it

  • Where is this reckord from. What album, I appreciate the one who tells me.

  • It's from their self titled 1978 album and it is one of rock & rolls masterpiece albums. 1978 was a great year....Rolling Stones Some Girls also 1978...The memories.

  • from the album "Dire Straits"

  • and by the way, i think that this has way more to it when performed live

theres so much more soul and heart in the song

  • truly a song that rocks through my body and makes me want to go nuts

  • Nah, this sucks:S

The album version is much better!!

Why does nobody put the album version on youtube??

If i knew how i must do that, i had put it on youtube!

    DIRE STRAITS 4-LIFEEEE!:D

  • album is cool, no question, but this performance is faster and rocks much better... i think its just a question what youre used to

  • I agree, I dont like the way the tone and tempo of the vocals are changed live, strange it is, Dire Straits are one of my favourite bands and I would kill at the chance to see them live but Im confident I wouldnt enjoy it as much as listening to the albums....

  • I agree the vocals on the albums are better with most songs, but the live thing has other extra things that you won't experience at home, especially when it comes to dynamics .

  • Its all about the quayside in newcastle.

  • DIRE STRAITS ARE ACE....!

  • OMG that's just amazing, I can't believe people are able to have so much inspiration to make such beautiful songs

  • this is truely magical.there are great guitarists then there is mark knopfler.absolutely sublime

  • Oh my... this is the greatest recording of this song I've ever heard! So great vocals and sparkling guitar tone! Top notch as always from MK and the band :)

  • This is the best version of this song.

Mark is so young and so passionate in this video!

Great playing, great tecnique, unique touch!!!

In my opinion he is the only guitar player who manages to make his strat sing in his hands. No one can get such a beautiful sound from his instrument. Singing and playing at the same time!!!!

  • I am not a Vai fan (except as the devil's guitarist in crossroads) but as great as he is he never wrote a song this good. One of my favorites...great grove

  • People always insist comparing pears and apples...

  • NO ONE.. IN THE WORLD, can play guitar and sing and play the guitar, at the same time quite like this guy, its not even concievable in the anyone else's mind.. and steve vai is a bitch. mark knophler rapes the guitar

  • Comment removed

  • He rapes the shit out of that guitar. And it is awesome.

  • Dude, don't be hating on Vai, the guy's fantastic at what he does, and he's the only rock guitarist aside from knopfler who doesn't have ego-issues. I'm sure they'd get a long fine if they met in a pub one day. And again, it's apples and pears.

  • No money in our jackets

    and our jeans are torn

    your hands are cold

    but your lips are warm.

  • Mark Knopfler > Steve Vai

C'mon mark is better than all those guitar players that only try to play their guitar fast as hell. This song (one of my favs) is far superior to any Vai tune, even tough i like Vai,but knopfler's on top, hell yeah.

  • Comment removed

  • For all you lovers of soulful finger-style guitar playing, check out Derek Trucks. Great, great player. Plenty of videos on YouTube.

  • class...................!

  • Mark Knopfler is the BEST guitar player...

  • I very much doubt there is anything Mark Knopfler can learn from Steve Vai except how to use about a million different effects with his amplification.

  • AMAZING... DIRE STRAITS!

  • I don't like it when a singer obliterates the vocal melody line. Here he has reduced the melody down to a total of three notes. Sucks if you enjoy the melody.

  • You suck retard , he is the best !

  • Wonderful. You are obviously a wise judge of quality, sir. LOL
