keemosobbee, you could have used a better choice of words at the end. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you really should read the scriptures on speech and allow God to lead you.
Matthew 23:23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
[These ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.] Our Lord did not object to their paying tithe even of common pot-herbs.
My friend and I were examining this scripture the other day. B Mindful of this, when Jesus was speaking TO the Phars & Scribes, they were STILL UNDER THE OLD COVENANT, NOT THE NEW! So they were INDEED to be keeping the law, of course they should have been tithing under the Old Covenant, but we don't see it mentioned anymore after the death of the Messiah. The new covenant did NOT begin until AFTER his death. A covenant reqs blood. No blood or covnant til AFTER he died.
A few years ago, on a John Hagee ministry program, he was preaching about tithing. He said that a man wanted to talk to him about tithing, and said he wasn't tithing. John said he didn't feel comfortable being alone with a thief. Of course, John flip-flops on this, now saying on his website that tithing is unscriptural.
They're saying we're not *bound* by Old Testament laws, such as that of tithing.
Jesus taught 2 commandments "Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your strength, with all your might & love your neighbor as yourself", then He said "on these 2 commandments hang ALL the laws & the prophets" And later to His disciples "Love one another -- as I have loved you."
"For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome." (I John 5:3)
Tithing was so that the priests (levites would have something, because they had no inheritance among the other 11 tribes of Israel. We do not have priests today. Jesus is our priest. I know per reading the scriptures & letters to the church, that they gave as the Lord had prospered them, so that none were lacking among them.. but I have not come across any tithing instructions after Jesus death.. still looking. Also, the "church" is not G-ds house, the believers R.Hes not n a house made by hands.
jesus did'nt take up tithes.. he sent the 70 out and they were commanded to not take nothing ( no purse or wallet because no tithes)because GOD sent them and he will provide for the ones he sends!hebrews says that the priest took up tithes as required by the law..pauls said in galations 5 that if you seek to be justified by the law YOU ARE SEVERED FROM CHRIST!!!!!jesus fulfilled the righteousness of the law. THis is going to seperate the fake for the ones sent!
The fact that my comment disagreeing with you doesn't make it on the post shows that you fear being wrong. Ergo, you're not spreading the Word, you're lying to people because you won't allow your view publicy disputed.
Correct in saying the church was never told to tithe.
However, scripture never notes anyone simply selling "extra" homes. They donated everything to the group. Still each had a home to live in and control over their home after the sale Acts 5:4. We simply don't do such today because we in America are in a nation with so much wealth, opportunity and free from persecution, that we can help the poor saints here without a commune.
The law was given to the Jews. Jesus came to fulfil the law..atleast according to Him."Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."
You say that since Jesus came to fulfill the law, that you must follow THE LAW. When are you having your burnt offering? How about your animal sacrifice? The apostles told people they didn't HAVE TO get circumcised. A highest order of THE LAW. And the apostles didn't tell people they had to pay tithes either. All those Gentiles Paul spoke with and NEVER did he invoke Jewish customs on them! Nobody ever paid 10% of wages from labor in ANY scripture.
IndependentConserv, not only that, but tithes were paid from crops and herds by Jewish farm owners and herdsmen respectively to priests of Levi within Jerusalem. I know the sacred name movement people are going to criticize my use of "Jerusalem" and "Jewish". Anyway, we are to give with a cheerful heart, not pay a percentage of income as a requirement.
The NT requires that we give 100%
