According to some videos posted by Subaru partisans on youtube, Volvo AWD systems aren't capable of this. Especially the dead weight climb in the first scene.
Properly used the winter setting would not damage or overheat anything, since it's supposed to be used when there's so little friction that the wheels would spin long before anything overheats.
When using the car like this, Would anyone use the "Winter" setting on the Auto, I know this starts the car in 3rd gear, to try and help increase traction. However, i can't help feeling that the car would be struggling to pull itself up a very steep gradent in 3rd gear. The other option is of course to use the Geartronic setting and manualy select a lower gear, (ie, 2nd) I use "W" when driving on Snow or Ice and is very good. Very under-rated car, more capable than people might think. Thanks :)
@turbointercoolernet simply not true...it can increase the internal temps (due to pressure) on the fluid from the torque converter...but it's very useful on flat driving under certain conditions such as very icy. I use it often in Saabs and Volvos under certain conditions...the problem is more drivers are not smart enough to know how to use their tools...thus why newer cars do more of the thinking for you!
The only mistake on the V70 with DTC is not having and "off" button for some needs.
@rsfeller If you think the winter function is useful on flat road with ice then you really need tires for winter driving! I have Nokian studded tires and will never ever need any form of electronic assistance from the car exept from the AWD system.
What year model? Does it have DSTC?

@iaincro92 When you have AWD you should NEVER EVER touch the W-button! The only thing it does is to overheat and damage your gearbox!

@iaincro92 You wouldn't use it on a steep grade...it's just to help you get out of an icy parking lot...think people!
