Why can’t this science of knowing who you are be taught in plain English, and why are you called Lama surya das and not John Smith or whatever your name is? I really think these teachings have a lot to offer but why jumping through so many hoops? These Buddhist teachers need to stop sitting around in robes and put some trousers on!
@Fishpigg He is wearing trousers. He is explaining things in plain English. And why should he not have the name he wants to have? Its his prerogative - not everyone on planet Earth has to have Anglo-American names, you know.
I'd definitely THINK TWICE before taking Yoga instruction from someone with such an undisciplined belly! Whatever Yogo means, as in relinking, etc, it has nothing to do with GLUTONY and UNCONTROLLED APPETITES. I think this guy is a fraud. ... Plus his voice does not sound like someone with a lot of integrity.
@UTube8H - there are different kinds of yoga. some is for fitness. other forms are for other forms of development - development of the mind, the heart, spiritual sensitivity/development, etc... his main focus has been meditative practices and spiritual development. so for those who actually are seeking the results he seeks and works to offer, they would know that his practices are not the typical hatha yoga practices that most seek in western society.
I read a book where the dalli lamma said every body could read the four nobel truths and and start talking about it to all your friends. if this guy is the moon or the finger pointing at the moon, it doesn't matter. try this guy a few times and if you like it go buy some better instructor. I personally don't think the way has a bunch of hierarchy, just get in there and o something let go some bait or something, instead of knocking the other guy. Few learn from emily post yet many have manners.
Don't bother with Surya Das. He's an inconsequential "guru". So many much more qualified teachers out there. If you're going to learn these techniques, learn them from someone who understands their actual purpose and proper method. Anyway, what kind of Lama takes or keeps a Hindu name?!
@rjbullock his stuff seems to be more entry level as a gateway for people vs. the deeper richer stuff which most would probably seek out the other stuff to at least balance his stuff. his work isn't bad, but it doesn't seem to be where the depths are. but deeper teachers tend to teach fewer folks. in hinduism people talk about sat gurus and upa/oopa gurus. sometimes the upa gurus help one get to the sat gurus. not that they are called that in buddhism.
As others have said, This man is Lama Surya Das. He is one of the few Americans ever to be ordained a Lama, and only after more than a decade of continuous study in Nepal. His activism and his warmth have been transformative for many people trying to understand their path. You don't have to like him, but don't assume he's a buffoon because of what he looks like or how he speaks, please.
This is almost embarassing to watch...why is he so out of shape and is that a gut??
He seems like some moron out of Brooklyn paid to 'demonstrate' something he has no clue about. Western Society seems to corrode and degrade anyhting of value from the East or the past.
I don't think anyone who gives an instructional video on tummo that is available to anyone on youtube is legit. If you are a meditator reading this, please don't try tummo or yoga without going through a real life teacher. Without proper advice you risk losing your mind, or at the very least risk thinking what is shown in this video is really what tummo is.
Guys this is Lama Surya Dass. Please be respectful to the Eastern religions. This is where the spiritual teachings orginiated. People stop being ignorant.
I watched the video on the tibetan yogi and I didn't understand what he was doing. Eventhough the guy looks silly, I understand the concept now. Thank you
Is this a joke? Yantra Yoga is nothing like that. Right this second, I'm watching this with an actual Tibetan monk, and we're both laughing like nothing else at this guy.
It might also be helpful to note that Tibetan practitioners don't start by doing these yogic exercises, they start with the same basic practices that other schools do, such as:shamata, vipassana, shinay as well as holding vows etc. Energy yoga is just a means for enhancing these practices, since the mind and body are linked you can therefore use the body to enhance the mind. This is also why the Buddha recommends an erect sitting posture while meditating.
How very true! However, the Buddha teaches that all things are interdependent. This is a teaching that is common in all schools. Since all things are interdependent, there is no such thing as a separate, independent entity. Realizing this, if you have the right view, you can realize the truth of reality in all phenomena. Enlightenment is not biased to only what is"pure". If you think that meat and beer are bad, you are only creating a separation between you and other phenomena. Namaste.
That is understandable my friend, but meditation is not something only to be done while nicely sitting on a cushion. Meditation is something that should be practiced with all that you do. Why can't meditation be done while jumping, running, cooking or eating? Meditation is about awareness, and if you are aware of what you are doing, is that not meditation? If you only meditate while sitting, what use does it do for you when you are on the move? The Buddha taught many paths, this is clear =)
if you entirely accept the fact that meditation is about awareness, then you should not put an extra effort like jumping while sitting. You should try to concentrate on mind or body or both interaction each other in every nano second while walking, sitting, eating.....and then you will find yourself in very near future impermanance, cause and effect......and finally you find ultimately there is no ' me ' . Such a thing as ' I ' do not exist. That is where you will find your Nirvana.
Does the mind cease to be aware while jumping? Can a Buddha maintain awareness while jumping? Is Nirvana limited to only those who do not jump? Buddha said we all have the potential to be enlightened at any moment in our lives, so how can we say that a moment of awareness while jumping is not an exercise in enlightenment?
The mind does not cease to be aware while jumping.
You still misunderstand what i am trying to explain.
You do not have to do extra thing like jumping or exercising like shaolin kung fu. All you have to do is be yourself and be aware to mind and body at all time.
Like you said that we all have the potential to be enlightened at any moment in our lives. The one who practise every single moment continuously. At any point, like while walking, eating, meditating....... you will find the nirvana
Yes my friend, I understand what you are saying. But you should understand that this is a legitimate meditation practice. The Tibetan Vajrayana method is that enlightenment comes faster when you directly face what are commonly considered "obstacles" to enlightenment, just like it is better to train for a race with hurdles. This is why you see Tibetan Tantric masters who eat meat, get married, drink beer and perform intense yogic practices that are meant to enhance the mind/body connection.
Lama surya is part of the Rime tradition, and he was taught mostly by Nyingma and Kagyu lamas. In those schools, it is a common Vajrayana practice for lamas to drink beer and eat meat. This is because the Vajrayana view is that even attachment to one's own practice of renunciation can prevent one from attaining liberation. Even the Buddha did not refuse whatever food was offered to him, be it meat or vegetarian. Since the Buddha wasn't attached, he was in the world but not of it.
Also, it would be beneficial to read the story of Marpa. Marpa was a famous lama who lived over 800 years ago and began the Mahamudra tradition in Tibet. When he arrived in Tibet after leaving India, he gave up his monk vows and married a woman. Still, Marpa flawlessly taught the Dharma to many students, many times doing so while shouting and intoxicated. This was because his attainments were so high he could still maintain complete mindfulness while drunk and acting in a "wrathful" manner.
my friend, I'm afraid sarcasm does not negate the possibility! And actually, there are several accomplished masters alive today that can perform intense meditation practices mindfully while intoxicated. If you don't believe me, look it up! =) Namaste
"Packing it down" and "loosening it up" sounds like yoga for the seriously constipated and gas prone. Maybe if he lost some of that gut he could jump a few more inches off the ground.

One of the greatest if not the greatest Dzogchen yogi
of the 20th Century was HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.
He was a huge man, who liked to not wear shirts.
To say someone is a fraud because they have a belly
means you are shallow. It means you have been indoctrinated
by the fashion marketing of Madison Ave. & Hollywood.
Being conditioned by such superficialities means you
lack the depth to be a Dzogchen practitioner.
To qualify for Dzogchen you must be free & self
-liberated from ego.

if you really think that Buddha practised like that to attain an enlightment, you must think again.
The original buddha's teaching was to radicate all the sins and attachments by observing and seeing the truth of reality in the way of mediation.
