@BeatleStone I'm trying to come up with a response to this but all I can concur is that you're not a real Airplane fan. Can you actually listen a song like "Today" and say it's a downside? Jesus. That should be blocked from view not in the highest rated.
The Jefferson Airplane, by the time their next two albums came out, were the 2nd biggest draw in Americia, only the Beatles being bigger. Hardly worth comparing to the Dead in that aspect.
Marty Balin founded Jefferson Airplane. Paul Kantner was much more of a natural leader type and pretty much filled that role later on. There were four great singer/writers in this band, hence the vocals being divided up mostly according to who wrote the song. The only two members who did not sing, to the best of my knowledge, were Jack Casady (bass) and Spencer Dryden (drums). All the members added significantly to each song, making JA greater than the sum of it's parts.
I agree with everything you said, the composer of the song would sing it too. I'd like to add that Spencer sang a song he wrote called "A song for all seasons" which appears on "Volunteers", his last album with the band.
I think Marty has his own Youtube channel, great interviews and biographies. Surrealistic Pillow is one of the best of the best. I was in San Fransisco, known as "The City", often, between 1967-1973, although as a pre-teen, but I remember it well. I wish the Airplane would re-form, God, I really do....

@BeatleStone You mean Grace was the vocalist on Somebody to Love and White Rabbit. Pretty much their two most popular hits. :) Grace is as much a part of Jefferson Airplane as any of the other members.
@kingsuji Yep. In fact, in one interview, Grace said she pretty much tried to sing the songs as written while Paul and Marty did a lot of improvising with their vocals. However, that still made them the finest vocal front line in rock.
kiss grace's nipples? back in the day i would have eaten 6 inches of her shit to see where it came from.

If I had to pick one band to listen to for the rest of my days, I would pick Jefferson Airplane.

Marty Balin's voice has more nuance thyan Grace. She's a shouter. The Airplane crashed after Marty left.
Jorma's solo became the template for all psychedelic bands after this cut.
