You are supposed to back back to the left of the path just above the question blocks to get a star power up on the last trial in this video.

You might want to check those sprite memory settings in the pipe sublevel, as I saw several Piranha Plant heads disappear. Also, not fixing the red stems may cause VRAM corruption, so I would suggest applying the fix patch. And there is another patch that fixes the glitched graphics you get when you put a non-standard item in your item box.

Also, I saw an invincibility block you can reach if you go straight to the left from where you get the flower. You can probably use it to pass by those floating munchers.
